While some might argue that ballads (Regine, ZsaZsa, Pops, Ogie, Vina, etc.), RN'B and soul (Kayla, Jay R, Jaya), or pop (Sexbomb, Gary V, etc.) were booming in the 90's, rock and alternative music was the decade's winner and the most prevalent music genre in the 90's with bands like Eraserheads, Parokya Ni Edgar, The Dawn, AfterImage, Introvoys, Side A, True Faith, Color It Red, Hungry Young Poets/Barbie's Cradle, Teeth, Wolfgang, Rivermaya, Yano, The Youth, Freestyle, Neocolours, Alamid, Rizal Underground, etc. dominating the music scene.

Waleska and Efra being immersed in the Philippine Music Industry warms my heart. One thing I would say that is I trust their inputs and reviews in our singing culture. Mentioning diff. names from the industry speaks for itself. They are not here for the clout, they are here to genuinely enjoy good music.

The 80’s were mostly balladeers like Martin Nievera and Regine. Most of the music were also introduced to us via Movies since our actors are alao singers like Sharon Cuneta, Lea Salonga and Gary Valenciano. But there’s also an introduction to rap in this era with Andrew E and Francis Magalona. The 90’s here was on point since our music was dominated with bands like Eraserheads, Introvoyz, Aegis and Parokya ni Edgar.

American music was accessible in the philippines during the 50s not only because of the vinyls brought by americans or by filipinos from abroad but also because of the power of AM radio. We had access to Voice of America (official broadcasting network of the u.s govt) etc..

There's more than that way back, like Magtanim Hindi Biro (Planting Rice Is Never Fun-sung by famers while planting), and there's Magbayo (sung when smashing rice to seperate the grain, also "Labandera Ko" sung for washing clothes and there's the Harana, when the guy who like his girl that he love/likes with guitar go and sing her a song like "Dungawin Mo Hirang" while the girl is watching by the window. And of course ballad and kundiman songs and singers. Thank you.

From what I remember, after fighting for our freedom and gaining our independence from Spanish colonization in 1898, it wasnt even a year later that the Americans invaded and claimed sovereignty over the Philippines. Even though we fought mercilessly for our freedom again, Filipinos ended up losing the war against Americans. American imperialism lasted around 45+ years, so with that in mind, we did have a lot of American influence including music which is why some of the songs back in the early to mid 1900's had that common Western sound. 1:22 that is Cariñosa. I don't know if you can recall, but EZ Mil sampled the original for his PANALO song. 5:57 Ahhh CasualChuck. I agree, he makes super interesting content on SB19 and Filipino music in general, but is really underrated. I think the Filipina girl group Efra was talking about is "Baywalk Bodies"? For those who don't know what he's talking about, he's reffering to this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZbUpoKQjtKAqrc

NO ONE HAS EVER DONE THIS IN THE MUSIC INDUSTRY... YOU SHOULD READ HER BIO IN WIKIPEDIA AND YOU'LL BE AMAZED OF HER ACCOMPLISHMENTS.... JUST BEING HONEST HERE , IF WE SPEAK OF ICONS , INFLUENCERS AND TRENDSETTERS.... I agree, the Filipino music industry, if to be revisited will never be complete without our national artist's contribution. She had proven that recording a Filipino composition during the 1970's was profitable. Our current recording artists owe a lot to her, she with an uncomparable golden voice and 18 lp albums. She did not need to shriek, whistle but her singing and interpretation during live performances have always merited standing ovations. I still prefer listening to her than today's creme of the crop singers whose style of singing breaks my eardrum. Worth mentioning also are pilita Corrales, Celeste legaspi, dulce, and many others whose works of art are exemplary and I am not mentioning the males and compositors yet.

If you didn't notice, there were more selection from the 70s but only 1 or 2 from the 80s. The 70s was the Golden Age of OPM, then known as the "Manila Sound". Music from the time are classics that are still popular until now, whether the original or the covers, and still moat sung in karaokes. The 80s was dominated by American and British music, but OPM had a revival in the 90s.
