Hey Walid, I have question. What program would you use to animate this painting you did. For example, make animated waterfall, sky or bird flying around. Would you just transfer this picture to after effects?

I thought matte painting was what is used in movies, painted on glass with gaps for live action?! Is this something else?
@phoenixdk
@phoenixdk 4 жыл бұрын
It is - the kind of painting being done here, is "just" photorealistic painting. You would generally avoid having moving elements in a matte painting, like waterfalls, electric bolts, etc... and you would leave gaps in the painting for the live-action projection afterwards. Today though, the digital workflow kind of makes all that obsolete.

I have a Surface Pro, I really want to be able to do this sort of thing, but the most I've ever really done to draw three-dimensional scenes is to sketch them, so using colors and textures digitally is harder for me to really imagine in my head, so this helped me a lot. There are plenty of speedpaints I've seen, but I like that you did this in real time to sort of explain it. I bought Sketchable on the Windows store because I happened to have a $25 Windows Store gift card from a couple years ago (I was in Middle school and thought I could buy Minecraft Java with it) but I can't really afford the subscription to higher-level applications like photoshop. Still, I think your techniques will be helpful to me. Thank you!

I'm actually 21 and I was wondering if it was possible for me to began and to, one day, have these kinds of results. So do you have some advices to a very beginner like me ? I guess I am a little late to this party. Not sure if you will see this comment or not. I really love the concept and execution. Beautiful work, well executed and enlightening. I would humbly suggest though that you stop apologizing for this and that not being perfect or not being planned ahead of time. No work of art is ever perfect, yet as this work demonstrates the end product can still evoke a sense of awe, wonder, technological achievement, the full glory and power of nature and a bit of mystery all at once. All of this just makes me want to go wander around inside the world you managed to create over a 4 hour period. Only I think I want to spend at least a few years there, not just four hours. All said it's pretty amazing and no apology for anything to get from start to finish is necessary, I humbly submit for your informed consideration Walid.

I love your tutorials, man! Super helpful, I'm learning more than I did in a year of art school. I do have a question though, mostly related to the resolution of your images. I like to work on bigger canvas sizes especially if I'm printing afterwards (but also just more comfortable if I want to go in and render something later in detail, etc.) but I notice you work a lot with smaller canvas sizes for your speedpaints. I'm assuming this is to make things like brushes faster and textures a bit better looking... but as far as I can tell there is no way to take this smaller speedpaint and bring it up in size to say print quality without a drastic decrease in quality. So how do you deal with this? Do you increase image size and then paint over the whole thing to make it look nice again, or do you just make separate images in full resolution when you know you want to detail it more later?
@WalidFeghali
@WalidFeghali 7 жыл бұрын
Great question. The thing is, I usually start off with a smaller canvas, like perhaps 2000x1000, or 3000x2000, and do my initial sketching and speed painting on there. Once I like what I've done, I scale it up to about 5000 pixels wide, and then just start rendering things out and making everything look finished. This is enough resolution for most prints! Thanks for your comment! Best, W.

Hopefully I can get a reply, but when it comes to digital painting generally, would you eventually have to add some real photographs in in order to achieve the best look or can you avoid that and still achieve the same look?
@WalidFeghali

You can paint it all from scratch! If you use photos you will get a more realistic, matte painting look, and if you paint it all you will get a more painterly look. All about what effect you want to create :)
