This may help show how many Outback buyers are actually concerned about the “gutless” engine: March 2021…this month’s runaway success was the Subaru Outback. The Outback recorded its best sales result in 25 years and a prodigious 190 per cent increase over this time last year, shifting 1,341 units. Not only did the Outback outperform against its own benchmark, it also took top honours in the large SUV class ahead of the Kia Sorento.

I recently bought a 2021 outback sport. Just got back from out central Queensland pig shooting for a week. I had the outback loaded with a 4.5 metre tandem trailer with 3 full size quad bikes, all my camping gear food, water, etc etc. the outback didn’t miss a beat. Absolutely unbelievable the way it performs. This was my first hunting trip in it as I always take my Nissan patrol. The Nissan can stay home now moving forward. 10/10 Subaru on a brilliant vehicle that took everything i gave to it. The only downfall was the 4 hour cleaning job i had to do. Lol

I love the “not powerful enough” comments. Interesting how many times I read this comment with new Subaru Outback, even though it is as powerful, or so close it doesn’t matter, as nearly all the current suvs, unless you want to pay a lot more for upspec VW Tiguan or Skoda. But who in their right mind would go anywhere near one of those at any price (I know, I’ve had the unfortunate displeasure). So let’s have just a quick look at some popular similar vehicles: Subaru Outback Touring $52,300 138kW, Skoda Superb Scout 200, 200kW $66,900 (the power range topper, but Skoda - really?), Tiguan 110 4motion 110kW $45,300+, 132 4motion 132kW $50,990+, 162 4motion 162kW starts at $57,500 and tops out $69,990!, Mazda CX-5 AWD GT $56,990 140kW, Hyundai Tucson Highlander AWD $54,700 132kW. Surely you guys do know why Subaru are reluctant to bring out the XT to Australia - don’t you?

Hi Trent. Thanks for the comment. I do agree that the Outback could really use a turbo, but another alternative that is really good (also a bit more expensive but cheaper than the Skoda) is the VW Passat Alltrack. Review coming soon!

Personally a turbo CX5 shits on this engine any day. pretty much the same price

About the speed cam alert, you can control and set the loudness by turning the volume nob. But it only works when the alert is ringing. The sound level stays once you have successfully set the volume in this way. Good luck.

As I have been looking for a new SUV I read a review from Sam Purcell who rated this 2021 Subaru Outback at 8.3/10. Last Saturday got a test drive in a Touring. Motor sounds like a sewing machine driven by an elastic band, gutless with just 3 in the wagon ( Sam, needs to change his rating to 3.8), Today went down to the local Skoda dealer who took me for a drive in the Scout 200. All I can say is, big mistake Subaru. Skoda will score heaps more sales due to NO turbo XT in Australia.

I'd have to say I agree with you. It does feel underpowered. I'm reviewing a Skoda in the next few weeks so I'm looking forward to seeing how it goes.

I will bet my first born that Subaru will way outsell Outback’s to Skoda’s Scout.

Definitely buy yourself a skoda if you want cheap Chinese built crap. Carry oil because you’ll start burning it by 10-15000 kms. And make sure you got Racq cover. Because you’ll need there tow trucks. Otherwise good luck with a skoda.

I don’t know about Australia availability as of yet, but the new Wilderness USA model is raised a bit with lower, torquier gear ratio and turbo, that one should take away qualms of too little power, etc. No heated steering wheel for -28 degree Celsius deep winters here nor upgraded stereo as of yet. No cooling vented seats. (waterproof=summer sticky?). 3 things I’d like.

I drove this car today and really wanted to like it. Interior is awesome. You know what I'm gonna say... in my opinion that engine+CVT is just horrendous and a showstopper

Don't buy it, simple. I tested many supposedly equal vehicles - I never owned a Subaru but the Outback Touring outclassed them all in the price range.
