Both the beat and the lyrics are equally as important for the creation of a hit. It is the lyrics of a song that reaches the hearts of people,punchlines of the song is what people will remember,but the beat helps with delivery of the words. Dubplates are hardly recorded on the original riddim as the 45. The splits is 50|50,the artist most time is the author ,and the producer the composer,so the artist can simply cut his dubs on different riddims.

When a selector pays for a dubplate he is paying for the vocals, and yes I’ve been to events where a selecta play acapella DUBPLATE and shell the place, and most dubplate voice pon different riddim than what original production was on… the vocals is the most important thing where dub is concern that’s why producers don’t get paid from it…. (To use your cement analogy) So u build the cement and me turn it in a house, and when the house rent out u feel seh the cement man fi get a percentage out of every rent? And a mention how comes real estate man a get money and the tax man a get money… that’s not how it works, u get pay wen di house a mek and u get pay wen di house a sell base pon di agreement, di tenant dem after that no have nothing to do wid u

That’s rarely the case, only in lock in album sessions I know of producers tailor making beats for specific lyrics. Secondly, dancehall is the perfect genre to corroborate why riddims are more important to a song’s success than its lyrics. Juggling, that’s all I have to see. The young yute dem and side picking kinda corrupt the music but in the glory days of dancehall, if an artist had a hit song it was because the producer had a hit riddim and while there was always going to be a standout every body who voiced on that riddim would have a hit.

90% of dubplate is done on a different riddim than the original and as walk and talk said sound men get the songs split so they have the ability to fly the vocals on any compatible riddim they want

Im a young artiste and me n my producer dont have any contract and when i do dubplates i split it in half bcaz im a real yute n producers have to eat too. It comes down to how the artiste look at things if a contract is not involved initially.

It all depends on the genre of music. Every genre gives a different vibe or energy so either the rhythm or the vocal ago appeal to that energy. Example afrobeat is rhythm (upbeat energy), Rap/hiphop is vocals, R&B souls is vocal, Dancehall/reggae is vocals, the type of music major lazer does is rhythm. So it really depends man.

It’s all about the agreement up front / before hand. Yes a producer can get money from dubplates if he and the artiste makes that agreement beforehand. Some even make the agreement later down the line when they see the huge sums of money being made off dubs . Speaking from experience. Some are for the idea and some are against it 🤷🏽‍♂️. I was for the idea because I think it’s FAIR. People won’t understand until they’re in the situation and they see the big difference in funds dubs make and how fast it’s made too.
