Downes is at the top of his value right now and if he stays here and plays backup to Alvarez his value will depreciate. I think swapping a backup player in Downes for a starting RB in KWP is a no brainer. Arguably he'll be better than coufal and many bigger clubs have wanted him. Only 27 so sorts full back position for a while and can cover LB also

I seriously hope this is just lazy journalism. Very much hoping there is no truth behind this. Downes would be a very important player for us in the prem but to lose KWP would be detrimental if we have actually lost out on signing Ben Johnson to Ipswich. Interesting point about Coufal being good defensively and poor attacking. KWP is the complete opposite. Fantastic going forwards, one of the best attacking full backs Saints has ever had however he’s very much below average defensively. If you lot do get KWP you’d surely owe us a fee with Downes included. Rather than us paying you. KWP is arguably our best player.

In hockey, with a salary cap, trades are the way deals are done. Sometimes teams will even retain some salary (still pay a portion of the player traded) in trades. Outright buying a player from a team is unheard of. Free agent signings are do happen. But buying a player off of a team like Arsenal bought Rice rarely happens in the NHL. So a swap deal plus cash like suggested in the video would be common place.

If this happens, and of course it's only yet another rumour, it will prove to me that Steidten is not going to be the great messiah many people believed he would be. For a start Downes , imo, could potentially be a very good squad player and get a fair bit of pitch time next season, particularly as we don't know yet how much of the start of the season Alvarea will miss. But secondly , Kyle Walker-Peters ffs, what's all this about. We've allowed Johnson to leave by not offering him any sort of acceptable deal and we're contemplating replacing him with a player of equal ability, and at the same time losing an excellent central midfield player. Absolute f^^^ing lunacy if it happens.

KWP is better than Johnson. KWP starts for us, Downes is a squad player. Downes in that squad today is the 4th choice CM behind Alvarez, Souceck, and JWP. Possibly 5th if Lopotegui sees Paqueta as an 8. People differentiate between 8's and 6's too much. They take up the same positions when it comes to team selection. Realistically, you're going to be playing 3 of them at an absolute max, more than likeley 2. He falls even further down the pecking order if Kudus is seen as a 10. The deal suits the needs of both squads. We need a more progressive RB and cover at LB which is the perfect role for KWP and Downes gets to be the main man in Southampton's midfield. If Downes wasn't a West Ham fan, you'd perceive it differently

I like Downes but at West Ham he is Alverez cover and at Southampton he’s the main man. It might be best for him to go. If Loppy is going to rotate regularly and sub well Flynn may get game time but he’s too good to be a mostly unused sub. It’s a shame, if Moyes had signed him he would be a regular but as he was a Warburton pick I don’t think he got a fair crack.

As others have said, it seems foolish to sell Downes who is consistently one of the top players in the Championship, home grown and a West Ham fan who may well work in Lopetegui's system. Particularly for 12m. If we're gonna do that deal, We should be looking at 20m in my opinion. Happy enough to get Walker Peters but I think we should hang on to Flynn for another season. I think we give up on players too soon.
