Logan Lerman was perfectly fine in the role he was cast in. Nobody should knock him. That said, the casting of the current series is so much more appropriate to the source material. Lerman did the best he could do with the material given to him. The new series is just so much better constructed overall than the movies, and Scobell fits the bill well for the character. The criticism of Jeffries is just bizarre to me. Who cares what the "race" of the actor is? She is excellent in the role, and I don't care whether she is black, white, blue, or any other color. It is a good show.

@@transientanusalright. Hear me out. Heroes of Olympus. Piper is Cherokee if I remember right, Frank is Chinese (Canadian but irrelevant here), Hazel is black, and Leo is Latin I think?. Percy and Annabeth being both white doesn’t seem important here, but I am worried about the impact of the casting choices, because 4/7 characters have cultural history that impact them in the story, with Piper and Frank’s being absolutely vital to the characters story. The original crew/storied heroes (so include Jason, although his isn’t as important) being white, and the addition of 4 new DIFFERENT raced people being the newcomers with unique abilities has an AMAZING story behind it when looked at. This takes that away, which is kinda lame. Further, I complain bc I worry it means casting that may not make sense for characters it is important to. If frank isn’t Chinese, like truly generationally close to Chinese, it destroys the whole character. There’s no rewriting that works there. Idk, I think the way they have written the new Annabeth is horrifyingly Garbo, but switching the cast race has shittier results at the end, even from a “giving other races a badass storyline” as mentioned above perspective. Idk how people like this Annabeth, she’s a stalker instead of a badass, she “dumbfoundedly” stole from the God of Thieves FFS. Also, no Parthenon and the pearls just being free w no “figure it out?” Cringe. As hell. Past the timeline? Cringe. As fuck. Annabeth only showing knowledge and no strategy? Ridiculous. She sent the best warrior with the second best warrior and left the weakling who she was most worried about falling into the trap, alone. Insane. That’s a long list for a damn episode.

4 characters have race implications in heroes of Olympus. Percy, Annabeth, Jason are older experienced people; all white. The “new” heroes are all different races. Really cool long term if you think about it, better story race-wise than Annabeth being a different race. New Annabeth is trash though, idk what people mean. She’s a stalker instead of a badass, makes a huge amount of strategic mistakes, only shows “knowledge prowess” and no intelligence or strategy. Grover and Percy fighting seemed unnecessary and not what happened, but complaining about the inaccuracies only mattered for the movies? Scobell is insane though!

Percy Jackson was a huge part of my childhood and i just love, how they casted it. Leah may not look as rick riodan described her in the books, but she just perfectly plays her charackter. I dont think they could find anyone better. The same with percy and grower and im already so excited for all the other charackters like Thalia, Nico and Tyson. I hope, it doesnt take so long to get the second season on.

the problem with opinions towards casting "the wrong" actor is the way people choose to say things. To me, the cast should be accurate to source material, if a character is described as a white, blonde girl, that's how it should be portrayed. Same goes for snow white not looking pale in the upcoming movie, ariel not being white with red hair, bella ramsey not looking like ellie at all in tlou compared to other possible choices or the controversy surrounding the possibility of having harry potter characters appearances and even sexuality changed in the tv show reboot and many other cases in this industry. For me the movie not having characters that matched the physical description of characters wasn’t the problem. It was that they fundamentally changed a lot of the characterization of the core crew. Percy wasn’t really funny, he had one humorous line, and we didn’t get to see much of his willingness to self sacrifice that is ultimately his fatal flaw. Annabeth had her tough girl moment for her entrance but we don’t get to see that much afterwards and she doesn’t show off her intelligence or passion much in the film. Ultimately these issues have to do more with the writers but the cast of the films had to lean into what they were given. I think the new cast clearly are excited for the show and the books and have shown us how deserving they are of their roles. Grover was turned into a funny best friend ladies man instead of a shy and nervous goat boy who is passionate about preserving nature.

Exactly their personalities don't match up with the personalities in the book, Percy is mostly angsty and quiet instead of funny and energetic, Annabeth instead of not shutting up about her interests barely utters a word. Their entire friendship has been changed even their motivations. The beauty of Waterland in the books was we got to know about Annabeths arachnophobia and see her in a different way : out of control. The writers changed all of this, I'm hoping there'll be an apparent reason as to why these changes were necessary at the end of the season but up until now the show only suffers from it. And as for the performances I believe they suffer both from the writing and directing. If you look at Scobell in the Adam project he's already more percy than here so it's not that he isn't able to capture his essence.

@@lunamegan I was primarily talking about the movie here. I think the show is doing a pretty solid job with the story and characters. They are by no means perfect one to one of the characters, and having just reread the series after watching the first episode, they didn’t change the version of them I had in my head, but I do think the core of the characters and their values and flaws align well with the book. I feel like the show is trying to highlight different parts of the character’s arcs and personalities than what the book does. To me it feels like they have all the same ingredients, the amounts are just different, the movie felt like a completely different recipe. Overall, I’m happy with the show adaptation so far. I think some good changes have been made and some not so great ones have been made but as a fan who saw the movie in theaters and was devastated by it, this show brings my inner 12 year old the joy I didn’t get from that. I’m excited to see how the season ends because it will make or break it for me.

the greek gods AND THEIR OFFSPRING were, by the very own nature of the mythos of the greek gods, always going to be of mixed skin tone and mixed ethnicity. the original depictions of the greek gods and goddesses were a deep brown color, and the Greeks were obsessed with bronze colored skin. they put 2+2 together, realizing the closer you are to the sun, aka mount olympus, the darker your skin tone will be. and they LOVED that! the original statues were brown and deep bronze in color before weathering removed the paint over time. for those saying the characters of annabeth, daughter of athena, was categorically white, are lying. they just SEE the character as only having been played by a white actress, and therefore cant imagine anyone else in the role. thats their bigotry showing its head. its biology that if a person spends most of their life in the sun, their skin will darken, get browner, get golden or bronze (depending on how much melanin pigment is directly beneath the first layer of their skin) over time. its also a thing where racist "Fans" use fantasy and sci-fi to escape from their reality that is diverse and racially varied, which is why they lash out in very racist ways when non-white actors are cast in roles they firmly believe to be originally white. their fantasy is a world without people of color in it. but, lol, Africans carry the gene for every skin tone, hair color, eye color, hair type, and combination of these 4 phenotypic expressions, over any other demographic on earth. you will naturally find a Black man with freckles, red hair, and blue eyes, blonde hair and green eyes, or jet black hair, lightly tanned skin, and green eyes. all of this is to say that, AS THE ARCHAEOLOGIST IN THIS COMMENTS, the original depictions of the greek and roman gods had brown and bronze skin before weathering blanched the marble to the white stone we see today. so casting a Black American actress as Annabeth, daughter of Athena is not only correct to the mythos, but is way more historically accurate than originally casting Alexandria D'Addario. www.npr.org/2022/07/12/1109995973/we-know-greek-statues-werent-white-now-you-can-see-them-in-color

@@Evoker23-lx8mb Yeah, the issue with changes like this is that devoted fans that grew up with the book have imagined the characters in their heads for years based on the descriptions in the books. Those imagined characters are held dear to those fans. So to cast against the book's description makes it difficult for those fans to accept someone who doesn't match their image of the character. However, Leah has been doing a phenomenal job of portraying Annabeth's character. Hopefully fans can come to terms with the change and come to love her dedication to bringing the character to life. Admittedly, I only recently started the books after the casting announcement, so I've been able to picture Leah as Annabeth during my read through, and I've had no issues. I just ignore when the books say she's white and blonde, lol.

If it’s good then it really isn’t a big deal. People get upset over any inaccuracies or casting choices until it turns out to be good but will rag on it harder if it’s bad. And so far the show is pretty good. Been saying she’d make a better Hazel appearance wise but nobody wants to wait that long. I am surprised black Grover isn’t or wasn’t an issue when he should be olive but black annabeth is tho. I’d prefer accuracy but if it doesn’t hurt the story, fine. Especially considering that the show was intended to be much more accurate to the book, it does feel very forced to meet some diversity quota. This is not to say she has done a bad job in her role. Think about the flip side: imagine crafting a building a story for decades, being turned down by several publishing companies before landing with Disney Hyperion, devoting the majority of your career to these characters you’ve created, and then had someone essentially put it through the shredder and then piece it back together with hot glue and duct tape. He’s got nothing against the actors themselves, but the association he’s probably carried with that would make it really painful for him to cast them. He’s already had to distance himself so much from the movies so that people know that he doesn’t approve of them at all. As much as it would be cool to see some of the movie casting in the show, it really needed a clean slate for not only rick’s sake, but also the cast from the movies also bringing in their experience form something that Rick took no part in and something that obviously tortured him.

That’s because Leah wasn’t casted for representation, she was casted because she truly represented Annabeth at heart. Also, the actress playing Snow White wanted to change the story completely, claiming that Snow White didn’t need a man and that the focus wasn’t going to be about true love. Leah loves Annabeth as she is and doesn’t want to change anything about her, but wants to bring her to life and give the fans the character they’ve always loved. What she meant by creating her own version of Annabeth was that she would make the role iconic yet different from the movies, but she didn’t mean she wanted to change her.

My issue with the Snow White casting, is that Snow White got her name because her SKIN was WHITE as SNOW. It's truly part of her character. And Snow White is the first full length animated film and is very dear to many people hearts. The change doesn't make sense. Well, actually it does. It's part of the woke movement... Did I care when they cast Brandee to play Cinderella? No. In fact, I love that movie! Did I hate it when they cast Halle as Ariel? No. And she did a great job! What's the difference? Their character's skin colour isn't part of their name/identity. Annabeth was described as white, but her character doesn't need to be white to stay true to her character. And, Leah has done a great job and I'm loving her so far as Annabeth.

But they couldn’t find a book accurate cast. They prolly couldn’t find someone who looked like character but also fitted it so they went with people who they thought fitted the characters best

If you're a shallow moron and think accuracy begins and ends with physical descriptions, then yeah. You'd probably have problems with it. If you have more than 3 braincells, you'll realise character accuracy is all about personality, chemistry and attitude. All the cast so far have embodied the book characters brilliantly.

@@justjamie5006first of all there is not 10 billion people on the planet. Second a personality fit is much more important than an appearance fit. The fact that you have not read the books makes ur opinion irrelevant. When you read over ten books of a character and their dialogue you are not left with a mental image of what they look like, you are left with a understanding of their personality and character traits. Leah has portrayed them perfectly so far.

I think they are all great. I basically hate everything else that Disney + puts out, .. but I think this show has been amazing. And I think the cast is great. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
