The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) says copperhead snakes can give off an odor that's produced by glands at the base of the snake's tail and can also be mixed with feces. "To some individuals this musk may smell somewhat like cucumbers," they note.

This is true. I grew up in North Central Pennsylvania and we had a farm along Interstate-80. There's a lot of purple crown vetch all along the sides of the Interstate and copperheads seemed to like to be in there. We did not ever go in the crown vetch, but copperheads were killed in that area. We had a great lgd that excelled in killing them. The cucumber scent was a well-known warning.

My Dad's hobby was snakes. He tought us girls a lot about them. He even took us snake hunting. It's the 1st time I've heard about a cucumber smell. I do think all snakes have a musky smell. Copperhead snakes are lazy they usually don't bite unless provoked or stepped on. Lazy meaning they just lay & wait for food they don't hunt for it. Glad you didn't find one. It's funny ( to us girls) to this day people we know call us to remove snakes because we are not afraid of them. And next month us 3 girls will all be in our 60's. I don't know how many snakes I retrieved out of the school when I was a custodian. Seems they loved the gym the most. Lol 🤣 must have been the vibration from all those basketballs during practice. 🤣😂😆

Snakes are my one phobia. I found a little 2' garter snake last time I was weed-wacking around the house. I chopped it before it could go into the crawl space under the house. Only thing I hate more than encountering a snake in the yard is encountering it twice, so I always grab a hoe or shovel or stick or whatever and try to kill them before they get away. Possums, raccoons, and other vermin I only scare and chase out of my yard, but I kill the snakes.

You may consider getting some snake leg protection. I seen lawn care use them when cutting tall grass and weeds.

Thank God we don't have snakes in Ireland, the idea of finding one ( or of one finding me! ) terrifies me.

Omg, I'm so in love with Ransom he is just the cutest. I'm so afraid of snakes, I wouldn't be that close to the pen where the copper head could be. Someone told me that they ware tall boots 👢, something about the rubber they can't get through.. I don't know. Be careful please, I don't want anyone get bit...

I like Goliath for the male rooster, however; I saw someone suggested Dino which could be great too. Glad there was no copperhead today.
