Bro choosing to do this in the middle of Japanese summer is absolutely insane 😭

Yeah as someone who was there like a week ago, it's insane intentionally being outside doing exercise right now. It's hot and humid enough that you have about 30 seconds of being outside before you're sticky with sweat.

I am Japanese who live inTokyo. Although it is not well known, Tokyo is a capital city with many slopes despite being a large city. No other capital in the world has so many hills. To tell the truth, Tokyo is a great countryside, and only the eastern half is developed, while the western half is covered in mountains and mountains. Walking around Tokyo is a good exercise, but it's best to avoid walking in the summer as you risk dying from the heat.

That cosy street from 2:35 is historic Itabashi Nakajuku (板橋仲宿), which was part of an Edo period post station, from some 400 years ago (i.e. on the Nakasendo path from Tokyo to Kyoto). The left over narrowness of the streets/layout from those days helps with the cosyness, and those "Victorian era" streetlights are a modern tribute to the lanterns of Edo times. Bit of a trip seeing this in a randomly suggested video as I used to live a stone's throw from where you walked there - and there definitely are restaurants, takeaway chains etc. in those "outskirts of Tokyo", all the way up throughout Saitama too. The recent overflowing of tourists should head for those areas a bit more, they might be surprised how cool places like Itabashi are.

Many cities in the US have multi-use buildings (they’re actually called “multi-use”) and that means they have apartments, restaurants, shops, etc. Sometimes it’s a fancy apartment building with shops on the ground floor and sometimes it’s dingy apartments on top of mom and pop stores or bars. It’s very common in NYC and Philadelphia for instance. Property zoning laws vary from city to city and even between neighborhoods within a single city. There are many neighborhoods in Tokyo that are strictly residential with few or no multi-use buildings, just as how there are plenty of neighborhoods with multi-use buildings.

During the height of the pandemic I was pretty hooked on JapanTubers that made walking content in Japan. Some did it without any commentary, some did it with. Some were prerecorded and others were livestreams, but it was all good to watch. Funny how after Japan opened up, this content is still good. Thanks for the vid.

You should go to Seibuen yuenchi it's far west Tokyo and really fits the like Spirited Away feeling of an amusement park. Kawagoe, it's one of the few areas that wasn't firebombed in the firebombing of tokyo so it's really classic and has an old bell, a 'traditional' starbucks, and a sweet's alley of traditional sweets!
