I am an incomplete T12 paraplegic. Being incomplete allows me to stand up and walk short distances with the aid of AFO's (Ankle Foot Orthosis) on both left and right feet. I also need two forearm crutches to support/balance myself as I stand up and walk. I show you both the AFO's and crutches before I walk.
I also demonstrate three different ways I use to stand up from my wheelchair. All ways are assisted in one way or another using a fixed object, my chair, one or both crutches. All scenarios require me to use at least one forearm crutch.
I don't often walk a whole lot. Reasons being are I'm limited to short distances, My hands are busy gripping the forearm crutches so I am unable to hold/carry anything and I'm too dang slow! LOL. I am thankful for what I recovered. It does come in handy for when I load my chair in the back of my truck or have to climb stairs to get into a building. Just to stand up a stretch out is a great feeling.

Twenty six years ago I suffered a spinal cord injury on a cold dark November night. It was diagnosed I had a T-12 incomplete compressional fracture. Since day one of my accident I have had and continue to have an enormous amount of support from my family, friends and community. Once becoming completely independent, bound to a wheelchair I always enjoyed giving back. Whether it was visiting schools, community organizations public speaking, demonstrating sports, visiting newly injured spinal cord patients, helping with non-profit organizations helping people is what I love to do. That is why I decided to start ParaLife TV. In today's world as we all know public gatherings, in my neck of the woods anyway have been basically shut down. ParaLife TV is a way for me to continue to help. Through KZbin I am able show people day to day experiences, how I have adapted to life in a wheelchair and share what our community has to offer.

I remember those days. T12 incomplete. Im 7 years in the new journey myself. Keep being mobile it helps big time. Honestly i told the wheel chair to take a hike and it helped me progress to walking faster.

Ask away! I'm happy to answer your question and any others you may have. When I did this video I was post 22 years spinal cord injury. T12 incomplete. From the time I was injured it took about 5 years for me to walk independently with crutches. Now, as I got older I used my chair more and more because I noticed when I did a lot of walking I was putting stress on my shoulders and hips compensating for the muscles I had lost due to my SCI. So to prevent shoulder/hip injury or even potential falls and breaking a bone I choose to stick to my wheelchair most times. I'll still stand up a bare weight. Use leg bike, walk when I really need to...It's safer, faster and . . . Safer :) Cheers!

Ahhh! I’ve literally just been measure for my braces. Due to get the final fitting in the next few weeks. Really looking forward to no longer having drop foot or tripping over my toes! My MS has deteriorating pretty fast of late, having used ankle braces for over a year, I'm looking forward to these.

...... I have an idea of a wheelchair where you can be in a "standing" position - with small wheels (or cranks) hand-level and move around like you just did whilst in the standing position ...... At the beginning when first learning to walk again I had full leg braces.. they took time to get on. I wear my my braces most the day especially if I am out and about. Wearing the braces help reduce my spasticity. I don't walk often anymore as I want to preserve my shoulders and hips so like you I normally use my chair. Thanks for sharing!

Shane - you are amazing! I just loved your video. I used to walk with forearm crutches & AFOs and then one day my crutch slipped in the rain and I fell in front of a restaurant and broke my hip. Ever since then I’ve had increased spasticity and now I use the chair almost all the time. I agree with you - I get around a lot faster and I’m a lot safer. I really enjoyed your video!
