It's not actually a peninsula, it just felt like one...
Barrow is "Arctic Tundra" which sits on "Permafrost" (permanently frozen ground) that is as much as 1,400 feet deep. What you see in the video is the mucky top layer that thaws out during the warmer months (June through September). It was a warm 35 degrees Fahrenheit when I shot this video, and people around town were telling me that they had just come out of a crazy heat wave (in the 50s/60s) a month-or-so earlier.
They are not able to build structures (houses, buildings, etc..) directly on top of the ground in a permafrost zone. If you look at the police station (minute 3:05), you can see the obvious gap between the building and the ground. Some of the things they do to ensure that the structures do not sink are elevating the structures on stilts, insulating the bottom of the structures, and building on top of gravel pads--all in an effort to prevent heat from reaching the ground; if the ground heats up, some of the ice melts and creates muck and sink holes.

This brings back some memories of Barrow. I was there from July to October 2012. I found the people of Barrow to be very nice but somewhat shy. The area is the northern most point of the U.S. which lies within the Arctic sea. I've been told the the North Pole is within a thousand miles. There is one tree in Barrow, but its man made.. Great vid.

I have to be honest it looks creepy, like the setting for a Stephen King novel. And that's in the day time! Can't imagine what it must look like at night. You know you're far away from home when people tell you to watch out for Polar bears. It's like a wild adventure just to go to the grocery store.

Thanks for your comment, +Kay2be2mr. Yeah, walking to the grocery store in Barrow is definitely an adventure...BUT some unique items, locally made fur coats/boots, and insanely high prices make shopping at the grocery store a whole different kind of adventure, $12.00 for a family-size bag of Lays potato chips/ $12.00 for box of generic cereal/$9.00 for half-gallon of milk/$50.00 for Tide laundry detergent to name a few....

Those prices are nuts, even by UK standards - how do you afford to live there? Is anything priced normally?

I was there in August 1970 for a day. It was 32 degrees. They have some big buildings now that I see here (the hotel and police station). They had a tour bus that had a body made of all wood painted blue. We were told that they hardly ever turned it off since they might not be able to restart it.

Not turn around completely because once you turn your back, they will come after you, unless if you can run like the Flash then you are fine lol. Slowly backing away and going into the nearest physical structure makes more sense. Good video btw.

This is a wonderful video and - amazingly - was taken the DAY AFTER I left Barrow and returned to Anchorage. I LOVE your references to Polar Bears because in the videos I took I mentioned that several times, including when I was wandering around at night. - ESTUPIDO!! Pepe's Mexican Restaurant attached to the Top of the World was a great place for a meal. It burned down a few months later - almost taking The Top of the World Hotel with it - and the last I heard was Fran and/or her kids were going to rebuild. A wonderful video.

And it was very interesting for me too see. I just ust graduated high school at that time. A memory I will never forget. It was daylight 24 hours when I was there. The people were so nice and welcoming. A Great memory for me. Thanks for taking me back. It was 1994 when I was there.

I was in Barrow July 31, 1996 and the only place we were warned about polar bears was at the Point (or where the Point meets the rest of the town; we weren't allowed to go to the end of the point). At that location is a sign warning about polar bears around the Point.

Yeah, the point definitely has polar bears....but they have been moving closer & closer to town over the past 10 years (possibly something to do w/ global warming...diminishing ice shelf...IDK!).

I am grateful to say that I am a born again Christian and have been since I was 19.......folks I am thankful for God’s beautiful creation and a lot of ppl are blessed to get to travel around the world to see the beautiful creation God has created! even though Barrow is not the most pleasant looking town still those that belong to Christ there I know God is watching over them and taking care of them!!!!! However Alaska’s midnight sun and the northern lights of Alaska are just another wonderful example and touch of paradise!!!!!! If you are a true born again believer then one day we are headed to a place that is far greater than any beautiful sight we’ve ever seen on this earth! However if you don’t know Christ as your savior then it burdens my soul to think that you are headed for a terrible place called Hell where the Bible says the fire is never quenched and the worm dies not! Folks you are not promised tomorrow! If you want to know how to be saved from this horrible reality then please by all means don’t hesitate to comment right back so I can lead you to the savior! 2 Corinthians 6:2 clearly states “now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation!” And Hebrews 3:15 clearly states, “Today if you hear his voice don’t harden your hearts! It is not me but the Holy Spirit that I pray reveals to you the truth of his precious gospel......John 3:16 says for God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son that whoever believes on him will not perish but have everlasting life! V 17 says then V 18 says whoever believes on the son is not condemned but whoever does not believe on the son is condemned already because he has not believed on the son whom God has sent! Also Acts 16:30-31 what must I do to be saved? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house I am not threatening anyone but just warning them what will happen if they reject this precious gift of eternal life! Christ died a horrible criminals death! He was beaten brutally mocked spit upon and endured countless hours of torture pain for all of our sins! Ppl go to hell because they reject that pardon for their sins! And Jesus is saying to them in Matthew 25:41 depart from me you cursed into everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels! Hell was only prepared for Satan and his angels! It is not God who threatens anyone it is the craziness of rejecting the free pardon of salvation! It’s like if you’re in court you’ve committed a crime say you murdered someone! Now if you say to that Judge hey I know I’ve done a terrible thing of murdering that person but I hear you’re a good judge and so I know you’ll be fair to me...... the judge is going to reply well yes you’re right about one thing I am a good judge and because I’m a good judge I’m going to see to it that you’re punished and that justice is served! Well then all of a sudden someone you don’t even know comes forward and says you know what I know he’s committed the crime he’s committed and he deserves to go to jail but I really don’t want to see him go to prison so I’ll just go to prison for him so he can go free! So if you accepted that offer you’d be free to leave the courtroom but if you didn’t well you’d be crazy and go to prison yourself! Well that’s exactly how it was 2,000 years ago! He is God in human flesh and he came to this earth lived a perfect sinless life and even though he knew that we had sinned and because of our sins deserved to die miserably but he said no I don’t want to see them suffer so I will go and take their punishment for them! Even though he did absolutely nothing wrong still he chose to take the punishment for our sins so we can be set free from the power bondages and consequences of our disobedience to God! Romans 5:8 says For God commends his love toward us that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us! 1 John 2:2 says he was made to be the propitiation for our sins! And not just for our sins but the sins of the whole world! 2 Corinthians 5:21 He who knew no sin became Sin for us that we would be made his righteousness! The truth is if you had to get to Heaven by your own effort then you cannot do it! Because Romans 3:10 says there is not one that does good! No Not One! Romans 3:23 says For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God! Romans 6:23 says For the wages of sin is death! But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our lord! But the good news is Romans 10:9 If we confess with our mouth and believes in our hearts that Christ died for our sins then was raised from the dead we will be saved! V 10 For it’s with the heart we believe and it’s with the mouth confession is made unto salvation! God gave us 10 commandments to follow and we’ve broken every one of them! And because God is a good God he cannot allow our disobedience to him to go unpunished! Well then like I just mentioned above his son Jesus stepped forward and said no I don’t want to see them punished so I will take their punishment for them! And also like I said he died a terrible substitute criminal’s death for us on a cross so now all we have to do is accept that payment for our sins and we can escape the terrible wrath of God that is to fall on them who do not accept this atonement that was sacrificed for our sins! Praise the lord Romans 10:13 says Whoever calls on the name of the lord shall be saved! And 1 Peter 1:4 you’re an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you! Christ clearly said in John 14:6 I am the way the truth and the life and no one comes to the father but through me! Acts 4:12 clearly states that there is no other name given unto Heaven or earth by which we must be saved as there is salvation in no other! Jesus clearly states that there is clearly only one way to Salvation and it’s him that’s it! There is no other way! God Bless everyone who reads!

Hi themusicifeel! Thanks for your question. You’re right, it’s cold, it’s mucky in the warmer months, and it’s isolated-but Barrow has been home to the Inupiats (Eskimo) for thousands of years. It’s actually one of the oldest permanent settlements in the U.S. And the Inupiats still live their family’s/community’s ancient traditions-like subsistence whaling! Their hunting traditions-and beautiful clothes, games, and celebrations are all dependent on this “extreme” climate.

Hi Brian! Awww...you're welcome! Right out of high school, traveling to the top of the world w/ your dad, and visiting with an aunt who was working in one of the most extreme places on our planet sounds like such an INCREDIBLE life experience! I love that I can now look at a world atlas and I get "it": that the top of the world is actually something tangible to me. Hi Oliver! Thanks for your comment. I'm sure I error on the side of caution on some of my adventures and not enough on others! I'm still not exactly sure which category my polar bear caution in the middle of town fell into, though. A little background information when this video was taken...a polar bear was sighted on the Barrow side (downtown area) the previous day (I believe some locals took "care" of the situation)--and the following day, I sat next to a Barrow local on my flight down to Anchorage who had just encountered a polar bear while walking from Browerville to the airport (she was surprised how close it was to her)--and I was a bummed I didn't have that experience and seriously contemplated getting off the plane and missing my flight to go see it! "so scared"...nah. I've had intense eye contact with lionesses in the wild in South Africa, several encounters with grizzlies while hiking in Canada, rode a bicycle with a slippery seat while I passed a few feet from adult alligators in Florida (that's in one of my other youtube videos), had a toothy moray eel come after me off the Kona Coast, encountered sharks on a scuba dive in Mexico--and the most scared (I'm not kidding....I completely freaked!) was when a moth the size of a baseball glove flew next to my head during a safari in Africa. Yes, I award my most "so scared" encounter to a....MOTH!!!! :)

Hi Matt! Thanks for your comment. Yeah, being advised to watch out for loose dogs surprised me too. The loose dogs they were referring to were people's guard dogs that might have gotten loose from one of the posts in front of some of the houses. I saw a few dogs that were my idea of standard pets on leashes or barking from inside people's homes, and I also saw some seriously aggressive "guard"dogs that were tethered to posts or boats in people's yards. I don't have very much information about the guard dogs, but I was told that some of the guard dogs have no, or extremely limited, human contact--and that they remain outside in crazy, cold weather.

I don’t know much about asphalt, but I’ll bet the lack of it in Barrow has to do w/ the difficulty/expense of maintaining it. The only place I saw asphalt was on the runway (which is probably a specialized mixture/process). I met a nurse from Oklahoma on her second day in Barrow (moved her husband & 3 kids up there for a year). She was really excited about the opportunity to work in the medical field in Barrow. Probably an experience like no other….hope you make it happen…good luck!

Hi Jet Lee ! Thanks for your comment. I hear ya...we regularly travel outside the city to reboot. Alaska is a pretty geographically diverse state--and I'm absolutely in awe with all of it. I'm becoming obsessed with the other pole (South Pole) as well.....If you haven't already, I recommend checking out the movie "Antarctica: A year on ice" Cheers!

Yes, there are definitely polar bears there. Google Barrow Alaska football team (and watch how the high school football team/fans are protected from polar bears by the local police. Yes, they have internet/wifi, etc... just like any U.S. city.
