You're often advised not to revisit your childhood haunts because, inevitably, you will be disappointed. I lived in Hillaries Road (63) from the early 1950s until I left Brum in1967 at the age of 19. I attended Slade Rd School 'til the 11 plus took me to Handsworth Grammar - I caught the 11 Outer Circle at Stockland Green (much changed) to school and saw my first X movie at the Plaza Cinema. My Dad used to drink in the Brookvale Pub and I played my first jukebox (Sandy Nelson - Teen Beat) in the cafe that was next door (Eastgates) on the other side of the Pub where the tyre fitters are now was The Star Cinema where I saw my first movie (Rock, Rock, Rock). Whilst almost everything on Slade Road has changed for me in the 50 years since I lived there, amazingly, there is still a Launderette on the corner of Thomas Rd which was the first we had ever seen when it opened in about 1962. By the time we got to George Road and began to walk up it towards the Park I was almost having heart palpitations and when we started walking up the path to All Saints Church where I was a choirboy for many years it was almost too much seeing a place which, like the school, hadn't changed in the 55 odd years since I last saw it. And then Brookvale Park where we fished, canoed and played football as youngsters, like everything else, much changed, the Bandstand and Boathouse gone now but still a beautiful place. I wish I could say the same for my old stomping ground but, truth to tell, I was shocked at how it has deteriorated - but that's the way of the world I guess. As kids we didn't play in the streets because there so many green areas around but every last one has disappeared under bricks and concrete, Alas. Anyway, Thank You so much Joseline for my trip back to those childhood haunts - A truly bitter-sweet experience to say the least!

I Can’t believe how much Stockland Green has changed, lovely to see Brookvale park, I used to go fishing in the lake when I was a kid. Later I used it as a running circuit when I was training for the Army. Thanks for sharing, fantastic memories.❤️

My best friend lived on Slade Rd, she died some yrs ago now, only 35yrs old. My mom use to shop at the shops there. Same shops just different names. Bakeries, greengrocers, butchers. Brookvale Park used to be buzzing with kids in the summer, paddling in the water. Thank you for a lovely vlog..

Sorry to hear about your best friend 🙁 Are you originally from Erdington Jan? Thank you for watching my videos. Have a lovely & sunny week-end. Take care 😉

No, I'm an Aston girl born and bred. Lived in Park Street, off Litchfield Road. There till the council bought out mom and dad, and everyone else who lived there in 1978. Then my parents moved to Erdington. I was married and moved to South Wales, then eventually Australia. Aston will always be my home. You stay safe, keep those videos coming !
