I love videos like this. We can walk around the street in Japan using Google Earth Street View, but we can't walk through stations and buildings so videos like this are very helpful for virtual travelling. I used to live in Japan and use this station frequently but I have forgotten bits. It would be so nice to have a video that was just a tour all around Shibuya Station, inside and outside but that would be a long video. I remember using the underground streets under the scramble crosswalk. I remember there was a smoke shop selling lighters and I would see a gun shaped lighter of a Walther P38 model. I kinda wanted to buy it but I never did. I've been wanting to walk around the underground from the Hachiko exit to the exit across the street by the Starbucks. Thanks for all your hard work! Without you I wouldn't be able to revisit places.

Sorry for the late reply, I've notifications off! I'm no expert about the best equipment out there, but I'm thinking of picking up Roland CS-10EM, they are binaural mics built-in to earbuds so they're very stealthy and lightweight. And you can search "binaural japan" on soundcloud for some good examples of how binaural sounds in very familiar locations.

That was really nice! Love all your videos and I agree with many that you should do more station videos. If you do it would be really nice seeing a train arrive and depart becuase its so cool to see all the people standing in line waiting for the trains so nicely and no rush. Its not many countries in the world that people can do that, Japan must be the only one.

I use a Gimbal (I have 3 actually, depending of the camera I use). BUT... I would prefer a glidecam (like your merlin) honestly. Glidcam/Merlin are once you master them absolutely AMAZING and you can make some pans that no gimbal can make. I had one once with a vest but lack of experience make it horrible and difficult to balance. But again, once you know how to use it... WOWOWOWOW....

So I was a bit surprised about that escalator etiquette at 4:25. I decided to look it up and it turns out that the Japan Elevator association (JEA) don’t want people walking up the escalator as that could cause a lot of accidents. It was like an old habit but some places like Tokyo’s Narita airport ban that habit and people still do it. Some places in Osaka fines people for not doing that habit so you must leave the right side for walkers. I don’t know if this is 100% accurate but that’s what I read. So I guess if you are the first one in line then just stand wherever cuz you are technically not wrong (especially if there are symbols indicating no walking or running) and you will probably prevent a potential accident. If somebody complain and telling you to move, just point at the stairs that are right next to the escalator.

This makes me glad that I have a car. I can't imagine having to take public transport. That looks like such a pain to get around.
@kingrobert26218 жыл бұрын
Skullking489 From my experience in Tokyo and Kyoto earlier this year, as a total foreigner who knew only a few Japanese phrases, getting around is daunting at first but once you get the hang of it, it gets easy. You also get the courage to go somewhere far from from your hostel/hotel knowing that as long as you can figure out the maps, or have wifi and use the internet, you'll get around easy. Before I went to Tokyo, I spent a week in Hong Kong and getting around was extremely easy, and HK is a small place, too, so I felt like you'd have to try to get lost. In Japan.. there were a few "oh shit" moments as I was on trains going somewhere thinking I was going the totally wrong direction or somewhere else entirely, and mistakes were made, haha. But the result of that is I figured out how to navigate. Now, as someone who still doesn't speak Japanese, I feel totally confident in going again and even by myself.
@Skullking4898 жыл бұрын
Oh I know it's easy to not get lost. I was talking about the wasted time and effort needed to get to a destination. I can't imagine myself having to take public transportation every day. Look at how much time is lost just walking around the station. Driving is really easy and fast.
@kingrobert26218 жыл бұрын
Skullking489 Well I think this video was simply to show the intricacies of Japan's subway/train infrastructure as the person was just kinda walking up and down stairs. All the stations are pretty elaborate and amazingly designed. I remember first taking the system and taken aback as well at how much is actually built underground. But to be honest, wasted time wasn't necessarily my experience from the stations. If you knew where you were going, you could get out pretty quickly. Granted, I just stayed within the main parts of Tokyo and Kyoto so I don't know if there are even bigger or confusing stations. Though, I will say the Kyoto station is pretty massive and kinda confusing. Not all stations were like that though. That being said, I was there as a tourist. I can definitely get your point if you lived and worked there. You'd really need to factor in getting out of the stations plus foot traffic.
@faiyez8 жыл бұрын
Tokyo is the city best served by public transport in the entire world. Your remarks about driving are really out of place. Also, driving around Tokyo would be the real nightmare.
@Skullking4898 жыл бұрын
***** I only made a comment about how much this video makes me appreciate my car. I do not wish to wait on anyone to get anywhere. I enjoy the solitude of driving alone while listening to my music. Therefore the quality of Tokyo's public transportation system is irrelevant to me. Because it is neither as time efficient or peaceful as my car.
