I have come to the realization today I need to live with the understanding we are in a depression. We have to fix things we have to make do, we have to walk away. We have to be happy with what we have.!

Exactly. People talk about the ''recession is coming ''. It's come and gone. Depression is here. People are losing jobs, housing, no food, empty downtowns, hyper grocery prices going up every few weeks. The government gives billions away to everyone except their own struggling people. We're on our own.

You guys are correct we are in a recession, decline, recession, readjustment, or whatever the news wants to push. I think we will never see the culture that we have had again, and it will be definitely more intense, dangerous, and a real learning curve if we don't take control and wise up.

good for you! My daughter's new in laws did the same- with exception of buying new furniture and redoing their flooring to impress people that were just as miserable as the new in- laws and that whole side of that family. Good for you for just being happy with what you own and not allowing others to control your future destiny .

I walked away from a new sewing machine... My quilt club complains about how loud and cranky my machine is, my husband offered to buy me a new one...but I just laugh it off now...I have learned to make a joke about it..I got the machine for free from a neighbor years ago and I remind myself that it was such a gift for her to give me that machine...how generous is that ... someone gives you a free machine that works perfectly fine (Even if it is loud and cranky). Hi from the UK. Definitely on the "do I want it, do I need it, can I afford it". We have been decorating our bedroom and I thought it would be nice to have some new furniture as we've had ours for many, many years. After shopping at numerous stores and looking on line, everything seemed so expensive. My husband said, why don't we just paint what we have, so we did. We saved a fortune and it looks lovely 🙂

Hello fellow Brit 🤩. He’s right and also I don’t know about you but we just find everything that is relatively affordable is really poorly made. People often knock Ikea but I’ve bought stuff from there which is cheap but doesn’t claim to be anything other, but equally it lasts. Some of the furniture stores we have in the uk just don’t sell quality. So I think you did the right thing 😀👌

I got a few pringles on a fairly good sale (around here anyway) & hid 3 of the 4 cans. WHY? Because my 9 year old will plow through them in a day (or 2 if I’m lucky) if they aren’t hidden from his sight. This way on weeks where we don’t have much in the way of fresh foods, we still have a side to our picnic when we go out on our homeschool group days. Usually I walk away, but figured it was time for a splurge! 🤪

I am wanting a little loveseat for the corner of my bedroom, and I almost bought one I saw online that would ship to my house, but the reviews weren’t great, and I decided to stop and wait and go look at used furniture stores for a well made one that is in good condition. I😂 don't even consider purchases anymore. I'm in a no-spend year. Unless I had a very specific need, I just wouldn't go into a thrift shop like Goodwill. I use what I have until it's completely unusable. Then, I use it for something else. An example of that is clothing. I use it till it can no longer be repaired or mended. Then I cut it up into cleaning cloths. They'll usually last for years and years and years. If I don't need cleaning cloths, I might make old, worn out clothing into a cat bed. If I don't need that, I might cut away the worst parts of the clothing and save the better parts for quilting. Quilts usually last for generations. If it's a sweater, I might undo the knitting and knit something else from it. Etc.❤😊

This weekend is the annual yard sale in Georgia called Peaches to Beaches. I haven’t been in 10 years. I went today not expecting to really buy anything but I found a deal I couldn’t walk away from. Paul will appreciate it, as did my husband. I bought two huge boxes full of PVC fittings, joints, T’s, valves. We have a farm and use PVC a lot with our irrigation. PVC has gotten incredibly expensive. The two boxes took up half my trunk…and it was all $30. My husband said just 3 of those fittings would have been that much. I also bought a tea kettle that I needed for $1. It was very easy for me to walk away from things that may have entrapped me 20 years ago. I was proud of my restraint and my haul. That enchilada dish looked delicious, btw!

We loved the local Amish livestock market for that reason. USEFUL things. cases of fruit vegetables, eggs, live animals, tools, and equipment of all kinds. Everything we needed living on a horse farm. Canning supplies. We made a budget; and a list of needs, in list of urgency. We hit every single one at that location and had all we needed in a summer.

My daughter went to culinary school, now a Professional Baker with a KITCHEN AID mixer that MY grandmother bought new. Four owners! I do NOT want a flimsy plastic replacement; I need a good mixer, or I don't really need a mixer. (I bake very little) That was a very expensive purchase for her, but I would say it is well spent, as it lasted many generations. Good enough is fine for me with some purchases. Used. If it is something resoleable, or repairable (by me) all the better. I still mend by hand. I am HAPPY to take usable things from someone who does not want it.

This month I managed to save nearly £200 thanks to your tips and ideas. I am disable and find it difficult to go to the stores so I buy on line a lot. However I will put the item in the basket and leave it there fir a couple of weeks, then if I have not needed it or have found a substitute in my home it is not bought. Same with food,as I have to book a delivery spot a couple of weeks in advance,I will fill my basket and save it and the a couple of days before delivery I will go through the basket and often delete many items or change due to my menu planner. I will also buy somethings that I can get more than one meal from ,such as cauliflower. I might use part for cauliflower steaks and the remainder goes into cauliflower cheese or curry ,or vegetable casserole. Thank you Emmy and Paul for your tips, ideas and encouragement.

I tried that creamy yogurt in the lemon flavor. It was good but I noticed the bottom of the container wasn't flat. I looked at the ounces and realized it was only 4.3 oz., not 6 oz. like Yoplait etc. If not free, I wouldn't buy it. My husband's favorite yogurt is Fage which has gone from 6 oz down to 5.4 oz. I needed a China hutch…yep a need, live in a really small house with a smaller kitchen. My husband said to get one for my birthday. The hunt was on, we didn’t want junk that would fall apart because it would be used as a kitchen cabinet. Everything I found was really expensive. I had gone to a shop that was only open 1 weekend a month…still nothing. On my way home I remembered a small consignment shop I had only been in once many years ago. I went in and they had several. I found one I really liked…no price…I called the girl over to ask the price, she looked and couldn’t find it either. She made a phone call to her boss, still didn’t know the price. The girl google lensed and stood there for several minutes and finally said how about $70. I said I would take it. I couldn’t believe it… it’s solid maple, dovetailed drawers and beautiful. I hope the girl still has a job but what a blessing for me. When I need something, I look and wait then when I find it I know it’s the right thing to do.

I grew up in Eastern PA and visited Lancaster many times. Here in OH we have a large population of Amish and there are communities in IN that are bigger than in PA now. I love their simplistic life style. When we set up our first apartment in 1967 we saw an ad for a farm auction. When we arrived we parked in a field that was filled with horses and buggies. The auction was for an Amish farm and all the property in it. When we were looking at a piece of furniture that we had no idea of what we were looking at, an Amish man said to us " you don't know what that is do you" It was a dough box and he proceeded to explain how to use it for making bread. I love to shop at the Lehman's General Store online catalog. I visited the store in Kidron OH and most of the customers were Amish. There you can purchase kitchen wood stoves, propane refrigerators, and every kind of kerosene lantern and non electric item. Recently I purchased their apple peeler. It works so well to peel and if you want to core and spiral slice the apples. About 20 years ago we purchased an Amish 10 x 16 barn with a loft. They came and in one day built it on our property. It is solid wood with solid thick oak floors and solid wood roofing and cedar siding. It easily holds the weight of a garden tractor and other machinery. I also have Amish made solid birch wood cabinets in my kitchen that came from PA. In OH near Dayton and Cincinnati there is Clear Creek Amish Furniture and showroom. It is expensive but it is premium wood and craftsmanship that will become an heirloom. My brother in law many years ago had them build a gazebo on his property. I also have a folding Adirondack chair that I purchased from an Amish man at a flea market in PA. If you want quality look to the Amish to find it.

Sadly, you may have heard on the news, there was a young Amish woman who was recently killed by someone in her home….this happened about 30 miles from us and has rocked both the Amish and Englishman’s communities….they still need prayers. After you pay off your car, save up and get yourself one. I did this for myself (at 55 years old) and I don't regret it. I use mine all the time and it's great. I can make bigger batches of dough, cookies, and it whips cream like a dream. If you don't cook from scratch, don't buy one, but if you do I think you will find it very helpful. Irs okay to have nice things, just all in good time. The only think I regret is getting the charcoal grey one and not the yellow one. It was so cute, but I was being TOO sensible.

I'm kicking my donations into high speed and taking carloads of clothes, household items and books several times a month to the library or donation center. I'm lucky to have a center that finds a use or a home for all items that are in good order. This includes fabric, building materials, and craft supplies. Nothing goes to waste with them! On the few occasions I've gone into a retail store for a needed item, I look around and think that my basement and attic have way too many similar items. That realization turns me around and keeps me out of the shops.

Yes, yes, yes! Times are uncertain, and in many ways we are in charted waters. We need to reduce consumption, reduce clutter and possessions so we can manage our resources wisely. If our life changes suddenly, we are in a much better position to adapt if we are traveling lighter. We have to let go of our scarcity and poverty mindset. It is wise to have fewer quality items such as clothes, furniture, household tools, as well as a supply if good quality nutritional foods for future use. Salmon filets and canned/frozen fruit and veg, yes. Cookies, cips and soda, no. Quality sweaters and boots, yes. A closet of fast fashion, no. Quality kitchen items, yes. Cheap nick-knacks, no. A streamlined life makes it easier to move for employment, take on additional work if needed, and gives us better focus on resource management.

You are right on about knowing when to walk away. We definitely live in a society of consumption and it’s made worse because we can get stuff we don’t need even faster than before. It’s a great reminder that we don’t need to buy into that. I walked away from getting take out tonight. It would have been so easy to just click and order but instead I defrosted some homemade vegetable soup, some cheddar chive sourdough I made & froze and had a delicious, easy meal for pennies vs $25 or more getting take out.

Hi Emmy and Paul. I am on a low spend year so I can achieve a couple of financial goals. I realized I really don’t ever find anything at Dollar Tree so quit going except to buy my Comet cleanser which I use in the bathroom. I have also “ walked away” from the grocery store circulars for the most part. I have been a chronic over buyer of groceries most of my adulthood and have decided to eat through my freezer and pantry. If I don’t look at the circulars I’m not tempted to replenish what I already have too much of just because it’s a loss leader. Except for produce and eggs I’ve not bought anything else this year. Like you, I’m only buying one banana or 2 tomatoes, or just what I need for a recipe and this has really cut down on food waste.

To answer the question of the day, just last night I had to walk away from buying a whole bunch of decorative stickers. They were lovely, but after thinking hard on it, I decided to purchase sticker paper sheets instead. Wasn't it Jamie Oliver who said, "Real foods ARE ingredients."? I like that! Like you, I've learned to begin (mostly) with simple ingredients and put them together in interesting and varied ways to make dishes we love. When you showed the two bits of video at the beginning I actually felt calm during the video with the fields being readied and I felt anxious during the bit with the stuffed shelves. You definitely got your point across to me. Less can often be more. The one thing that came to mind immediately for me as far as what I've walked away from recently was a large bottle of plain Coffee Mate creamer. My daughter and I had dental cleanings in our small town this week and we needed a few things from the grocery store. She and I enjoy flavored creamers (I know....awful stuff), but sometimes we like regular creamer and my husband likes it as well. A large bottle (family sized) of Coffee Mate was $7.99. NO WAY! I told her we'd use evaporated milk or something else until I can get to the store in the next town where we do our main shopping. The creamer is cheaper and they also offer generic brands. I'm NOT paying that much for creamer. We walked away...and so far, we're surviving. ; )

I am an avid cross stitcher and there was a recent “market” where new supplies, patterns and kits were being promoted so my local craft shop had lots of new things, which I wanted to see but did walk away from. Once home I reorganized my stash of cross stitch supplies and found several patterns I wanted to stitch that I already own. However we went to a Polish deli/food store in our city and we splurged on some delicious Polish and other European foods we don’t see in our chain grocery stores. My family is of Ukrainian descent and holidays like Easter make me feel nostalgic for the foods I ate as a child.

Oh my goodness, I haven’t seen chi chi’s anything since I moved to az! So homesick now! I’m originally from Maryland, I remember vividly at an Amish market in PA, we were talking to an Amish gentleman who found out my parents were living in Florida and he was telling us about his summer home there… apparently that’s not unusual, which for some reason blew my mind. I think most Amish are not inundated with all the commercial pressure and never ending influencing at every turn and they can avoid the pressure. That’s why I’m being way more selective about my social media experiences, making sure they are like yours, a gentle reminder to use what you have and if you do need it find it cheaper. I don’t need special organizing/decorative etc things! The meal looked amazing! I walked away from a set of china that I just fell in love with! I found myself divorced at 50 and gave my china to my daughter, and thought this new china will be my new adventure china, but it was hard, but I realized it was just tableware and I already have some.

I’ve learned to “make” really quick air fryer pizza in the air fryer using pre- baked pizza crusts from the store. A little pizza sauce, some shredded cheese, and some sliced smoked sausage (we like it better than pepperoni.) I assemble the pizza while the air fryer is preheating. Then into the air fryer for 5 minutes and it’s done. It’s delicious, too. Not as economical as making your own pizza dough but much cheaper than even a frozen store pizza. And faster, too.

I had to walk away from a corned beef brisket, groceries in general, and a Pasqua new low cost dress, warm socks, and heat in the house.. My cat needs pet wipes and had to put the money for her 42 dollars for 400 wipes. (I tried sensitive baby wipes but they irritated her behind and her hair fell out; so no skimping on those. I tried water and paper towels, but they don't work like the pet wipes.) I also wanted Pasqua groceries but had an unexpected vet bill of 1,200, plus 900 for half of property taxes at the end of February that cleaned out what little savings we had. Lent is going to be extra tight this year, but with God all things are possible 🙏🏼❤️

Great prices on the grocery haul! What happened to me today (in HI): Organic blueberries, 6 oz, $ 7.59 ... Needless to say that I walked away 🙂 I bought frozen instead for a lot less ... But in the sense you mentioned: Also a vintage Pyrex dish at a yard sale. Having moved from a house to a condo, I really do not have the space anymore. So in addition to: "Do I really need it? Do I just want it?" I ask myself: "Where will I store it?". If I cannot come up with a solution, I walk away. Scrapbooking products and stationary (I still write paper and ink letters ...) are also a great weakness of mine. I constantly have to remind myself that I have enough for probably the rest of my life already. I really want to use up what I have. Thank you for the recipe! My husband cannot have tomatoes, so I am always happy to find dishes with "non-tomato" sauces. Our cooking is very similar 🙂 Easy, quick, using leftovers, using mostly one ingredient items, cooking from scratch, grating cheese myself and so on.

I live in San Diego and just picked some avocados from my tree. I wish I could send you some for your yummy enchiladas. You both are so adorable.

So good! I’ve started a list on my phone of things I need to look for at the thrift store. I used to shop and buy because it was such a great deal. Now, I am trying to only shop for NEEDS. ❤️
