Props to you for navigating the 125th and Lexington area at night. I grew up in that neighborhood and we used to call that area from 125th down to about 122 and Lex, "Thriller." You had to be vigilant and generally not walk alone, if you could help it, because the addicts and the dealers were always out in full force. Even though NYC is a different place than it was in the 80s/90s, that strip hasn't seemed to change much.

It's a bit quieter overall these days, mainly because many of the stores and the McDonalds closed down, so a lot of the people who used to hang out there are over on 125th & Lenox now. I've only lived in East Harlem for 19 years, but long enough to see it go through a few changes.

I live in Harlem for while and then left. One time I went to one of this chicken spot in my block. And there were like 5 guys in there. One guy came to me and he was like "what you got in your pocket" I had $5 bucks. And he was like " Can I have it" And then I was like you can have it. He got little nervous because I gave him without hesitation. Next day, I saw him by himself, he looked at me and then ran. He thought I was looking for him. True story. Lol!!

A wise man once said drugs don't make life better, they just make life more interesting. And once you try drugs, your interesting life becomes less interesting unless you're on the drug. "Getting high on life" used to be a good thing until you try drugs and ruin your life. If my comment keeps at least ONE person from getting addicted to drugs, the world will be a better place.

And since nothing's really changed ever or looking to be anytime soon, it also proves that the government and local politicians don't care about its own people, if they did those streets wouldn't be full of homeless folks and litter everywhere. You think the crooks in power care, nope think again, the elites care only about themselves so they'll talk and talk but nothing will change - except that America is sinking further and further into the abyss...

I worked overnights in Harlem Hospital last year and would sometimes have to walk to work at night from West Harlem to East when the subway was out of order--I'm a nurse in my 40s from upstate NY. Never had any problems. The news makes it seem much worse than it is. Mind your business, no one bothers you. Probably some of those people standing on the streets are waiting for public transportation...the city bus to get to a job or home. Sometimes I'd get lost at night and would have to ask some random person for directions. New Yorkers are extremely helpful. Never had a problem.

I've done those walks and it was one of the things I loved about Harlem. It's 2AM can't sleep or bored so I head to 125th Street and damn if I don't run into someone I know. On the dangerous side Its about how you carry yourself. After I moved to western Massachusetts I went back to the city after 5 or 6 years of very comfortable living and I found I had lost that New Yorker edge. I was scared where I had never been scared.
