Produced by the Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) Southwest, this video discusses the context of language acquisition and development among Native American students in New Mexico. In this video we hear from educators and administrators from Cuba and Jemez, New Mexico about the strategies they use to preserve their native languages and support English language development. In Cuba the district provides a Navajo language program where students learn to speak Diné. At the San Diego Riverside Charter school in the Pueblo of Jemez, students from Kindergarten to Eighth grade participate in a Towa language immersion program. The video discusses the importance of schools supporting both native language acquisition, development, and preservation and English language acquisition and development with Native American students. Culturally responsive education practices, connecting with tribal leaders, and family and community engagement are additional key themes discussed in the video.
