Their "life at the bottom" still looks better than my life in middle America. Not that I'm downplaying the hardship of the working class in China, I just wish my country had better urban development.

normal Chinese, what do you mean? These are migrant workers who wish to save most of the money by choosing a cheap rent. They can choose to live in apartments as well but it will eat up a lot of their savings, which they don't prefer.

Apparently they have pretty high standards. However, let's be honest, overpopulation may lead many to live in small spaces and they would not be able to buy a car, etc. I doubt that your problem is health or education like elsewhere. I have also come across speeches that seek to encourage citizens and businessmen not to fall into Honk Kong or South Korea style practices, with respect to the quality of housing. That will take a little more time.

It depends on your reference. Urban villagers locate in megacities. Of course the urban villages are the relatively poor regions in the megacities. But the urban villages in megacities are still richer than some very rural regions.

depends on which city in China in which year. Urban villages or ghettoes used to be common in the cities across China, but nowadays most of the cities in China have torn down most of their urban villages (there are some still existing but in small numbers ) for urban developments, but the cities in the Pearl River Delta in Guangdong still have many such villages due to the influx of migrant workers from other provinces in the past 4 decades who prefer such an accomodation. In Guangdong, many urban villages actually occupy prime locations in the cities (some are even close to downtown) and the land prices are already very high these days and the local government find it increasingly unaffordable to dismantle them, at the same time it also creates social dissatisfaction as these urban villages offer cheap rents to many migrant workers who wish to save most of their money. So the local governments in Guangzhou are slow in tearing down these villages but they are still doing it.

This looks like a carbon copy of some low-income urban areas in Hanoi, Vietnam. Literally: narrow streets, small houses, bikes, pedlars, even the litters on the street and the chaotic noise! I'm living in one, actually.
