Cohn has said the song isn't specifically about Elvis. The opening lyrics kind of explain his state of mind at the time. He traveled to Memphis as he was feeling a bit lost and frustrated with the music industry and stuck. The lyric "I've got a first class ticket but I'm as blue as a boy can be" says it all. His trip to Memphis was his attempt to find his way and I would say that it worked considering it resulted in his writing of this song. The story is true, right down to the woman named Muriel who played at The Hollywood. Memphis has an amazing musical history and this song touches on some of the greats. The first being WC Handy, the father of blues, Elvis of course and he refers to Reverend Green who would be the great Al Green. I think he chose a great place to re-center himself.

You’ll have to react to a song called Black Velvet. It’s sung by Alannah Myles. It’s also a song that pays homage to Elvis in a real bluesy way. The official video will give you perspective.

Great tune among the many tributes to Elvis. Another good one is "Black Velvet". There are many. The late Toby Keith said he hoped he would meet Elvis in heaven. Thanks

The Jungle Room is a room in Graceland that has leopard print and other jungle type prints. Marc Cohn grew up with the Jewish faith- that’s why he was asked if was a Christian. This is a great one

Mark Cohen had an inspirational block in his music and went to Memphis to get inspired. Every reference he makes is historical in Memphis. When he talks about Reverend green... He's talking about Al Green the r&b blues jazz musician who is now a minister and has a church in Memphis. It's somewhere you have to go on a Sunday for sure. What can 10 ft off of Beale..😊 the most famous street in Memphis where are all the music is... Sun records is a very famous studio where everybody recorded. And still does. Elvis built his house on Union avenue, which is not in the inner City of Memphis because growing up inpoverished in Mississippi cotton fields it was where he felt most at home. Graceland isn't a big palacial place like you would think...

It has a heavy Elvis element, but it's not a tribute song to him. The overall theme is Memphis and its culture, which includes several people.
