The harbour town of Nynäshamn ist located about 60 km south of Stockholm.
The ferries to the archipelago off Nynäshamn to the islands of Gotland and Gotska Sandön depart from the ferry port, as do the large ferries to Ventspils and Liepaja in Latvia and to Gdansk in Poland. Nynäshamn also has a large container harbour.
In summer, the town is a centre of attraction for sailors and motor boaters, who like to head for the local marina. The 1912 Olympics were already aware of the good sailing area and sailing competitions were held there.
Today, Nynäshamn is a suburb of Stockholm and has around 25,000 inhabitants, who can commute to Stockholm by S-Bahn.
