The beach landscape (from 3:08) of sea and trees is surreal. The trees are like the moon of Saturn, too close to a far greater entity and "destroyed by its tidal effect".

I found Austerlitz immensely depressing. But then anything that describes the Nazi machine for killing women and children does that to me. There is no redemption for those acts for all time.
