Walking in the Japanese Street 🇧🇷 🇯🇵 Liberdade District, São Paulo, Brazil |【4K】2021

Liberdade is a tourist district located in the central area of ​​the city of São Paulo, part of the district of Liberdade and part of the district of Sé. It is known as the largest stronghold of the Japanese community in the city, which is considered the largest community in the world. outside of Japan.
The Japanese presence in the neighborhood began when, in 1912, Japanese immigrants began to live on Conde de Sarzedas Street, a steep slope, where, in the lower part, there was a stream and a floodplain area.
One of the reasons they looked for this street was that almost every property had basements, and the rents for the basement rooms were incredibly cheap. In these rooms, only groups of people lived. For those immigrants, that corner of the city of São Paulo meant hope for better days. As it is a central neighborhood, from there they could easily get around to work.
Already at that time, commercial activities began to emerge: an inn, an emporium, a house that made tofu (soy cheese), another that made manju (Japanese sweet) and also employment agency firms, thus forming the "street of the Japanese".
In 1915, Taisho Shogakko (Taisho Primary School) was founded, which helped in the education of the children of Japanese people, then approximately 300 people.
In 1932, there were about 2,000 Japanese in the city of São Paulo. They came directly from Japan and also from the interior of São Paulo, after terminating their labor contract in the fields. Everyone came looking for an opportunity in the city. About 600 Japanese lived on Conde de Sarzedas Street. Others lived on the streets Irmã Simpliciana, Tabatinguera, Conde do Pinhal, Conselheiro Furtado, dos Estudantes and Tomás de Lima (today Mituto Mizumoto), where, in 1914, Hotel Ueji was founded, pioneer of Japanese hotels in São Paulo.
On October 12, 1946, the São Paulo Shimbun newspaper was founded, the first post-war among the Nikkei. On January 1, 1947, it was the turn of Jornal Paulista. In the same year, Livraria Sol (Taiyodo) was inaugurated, still present in the Liberdade neighborhood, which starts importing Japanese books across the United States. The Tunibra travel agency starts its activities in the same year. An orchestra formed by professor Masahiko Maruyama performs the first post-war concert in March 1947, in the auditorium of the Centro do Professorado Paulista, on Avenida Liberdade.
On July 23, 1953, Yoshikazu Tanaka inaugurated, on Galvão Bueno Street, a 5-storey building with a lounge, restaurant, hotel and a large screening room on the ground floor for 1,500 spectators, named Cine Niterói. Different films produced in Japan were shown weekly for the entertainment of Japanese people in São Paulo. Galvão Bueno street becomes the center of the Japanese district, growing around Cine Niterói, having received part of the merchants expelled from Conde de Sarzedas street. It was there that the Japanese could find a little corner of Japan and miss their homeland. In its heyday, the cines Niterói, Nippon (on Santa Luzia street - current headquarters of the Aichi Kenjin kai Association), Joia (on Carlos Gomes square - today a concert hall[5]) and Tokyo (São street) operated in the region. Joaquim - also church).
In April 1964, the building of the Japanese Cultural Association of São Paulo (Bunkyô) was inaugurated on the corner of São Joaquim and Galvão Bueno streets.

Comparem imagens de como era o bairro até 2007 com os letreiros. Depois de tiraram o bairro entrou em decadência. Enquanto em alguns lugares a Cidade Limpa foi boa, na Liberdade ela foi ruim. O que dava a essência ao lugar eram os letreiros, parece uma coisa besta mas o que você mais convidativo, um bairro japonês com alfabeto japonês ou um bairro japonês com alfabeto latino? Deveria haver uma flexibilização dessa lei na Liberdade e na Paulista, permitir luminosos, letreiros típicos. A prefeitura sabe do potencial turístico dessa região mas não se importa em fazer alguma coisa

Comentário exagerado! Nas partes mais comerciais das ruas principais, a fiação é toda enterrada! É assim na av. Liberdade, na rua dos Estudantes, na galvão Bueno até depois do grande viaduto, na Thomás Gonzaga, etc. Na feirinha dos fins de semana da Praça da Liberdade, se vê uns poucos fios levando eletricidade para trás das barracas. Os barraqueiros puxam os fios só durante a feira, depois é tudo recolhido! Seu comentário é tão exagerado que chega a ser mentiroso! Realmente é preciso melhorar as calçadas e pintar os postes com lanternas japonesas. Chega de mi-mi-mi!

Gostaria fazer comentário a respeito da melhoria nesta rua onde concentra as lojas de produtos japonesas seria bom virar calçadão assim evitaria acidente com veículos que passa nessa rua constantemente além disso à rua e muito estreito pois fui passear nesse lugar (aqui no exterior onde eu moro e muito comentado esse lugar) já faz algum tempo no Brasil percebi que aí está bem movimentado de público em geral ficaria melhor e mais confortável para os público e turistas espero que a Prefeitura da cidade de São Paulo faça essa melhoria pois ficaria um lugar top pois em termos de localização e meio de transporte está bem estruturado espero ter ajudado na minha opinião abraço aqui de Japão 🇯🇵

I wish this was in Los Angeles, because when I see a picture of it on google or wikipedia in the mid or early 2010s or a long time ago I thought it feels like Los Angeles have this red torii gate with these tall buildings reminded me of a building destroyed by a tornado in the movie Day After Tomorrow, but I know I never expect that there is a Japantown in brazil, but it is just called Liberty in that brazil's official language, so it was always disappointing, because I notice that the latin american countries could only have chinatowns all, I thought it was just only these 3 in the US, Little Tokyo, Los Angeles, Japantown, San Francisco and Japantown, San Jose and that's when I realized that there were, already many Japanese in USA came in the 1880s, but 3 decades before the start of Japanese coming to latin america in 1899 first in peru before brazil in 1907, but I expect USA is home to the largest Japanese population in the world outside Japan, because Los Angeles's Little Tokyo was created in 1906 before that liberdade in 1912 the same year Japan gave the USA the 3,000 sakura trees to Washington DC so when liberdade started to become an asiantown in 1912 after the slavery is banned which today I read some called it a brazilian chinatown, because many chinese are living there today as always too and some koreans too and the Japanese moving out of this district no longer the unofficial Japanese district it use to be and I think there should be no torii gate, but they built chinese red and white lantern streetlights only, now the Japanese immigrants and descents are moving to USA or Canada, because USA has more Japantowns then brazil did sao paulo people think which is sometimes called chinatown or Asiatown, but that liberdade non-English speaking street should have a chinese gate actually in 1974 like peru, cuba or argentina have them, it's off liberdade is missing a chinese gate for that road how the spanish speaking cities does!

Well, as far as records indicate, Brazil is home to the largest Japanese community outside of Japan, I can't vouch for this, but it seems to me that there are more Japanese in Brazil than in the US or Peru. Here you will find many cities with many Japanese descendants, such as Sao Paulo, Curitiba, Londrina, etc. Brazil also has the largest number of Italian descendants outside Europe - I myself am one of them. Brazil also has a large German colony in southern Brazil, but this is not the largest German colony outside of Germany. Many Japanese speak English in Japan as over 15 million+ I read there speak, so I do not think they can go to brazil and they'd think it's a poor country as well someone has told me that Japanese think brazil is dangerous, dirty or stinky and many Japanese think about and love about rich America or Canada only like the American culture is very popular in Japan as my art teacher use to tell me many Japanese teenagers wish to be born in the USA and also Australia, many can't speak the language in brazil and brazil wasn't an English country for them to speak their second language English daily there, how is that possible many articles are this lieful IBGE think brazil has the largest in the world when USA have them arrived there first, but the one to be should of been the largest in the USA, I am tired of many people say that, since brazil never brought them first in the 19th century so US never in the 20th century, it would much make more sense when many Japanese learn English then that means USA is the one to host the largest Japanese population in the world outside Japan just like USA horst the largest anime industry outside Japan as animation are very much in common of both countries or got the Japanese arrived in 1880 which in 29 years later to brazil after 1907, this is what it said "The Japanese population in the United States grew from 148 in 1880 (mostly students) to 2,039 in 1890 and 24,326 by 1900." so that's the proof as that more and more still come in the 20th century from early, mid and late century, USA be the only country to host a million Japanese in the Americas is the only one while brazil has a thousand a little more then peru with 160,000, see? I have no idea your italian, but I'm not into any italian things, german or portuguese things, just cultures of Polish and Japanese, a little bit of English, Scottish or Egyptian or Australian.

@@Kawayoporu Actually the vast majority of asians in Brazil are japanese. It must have something to do with the fact that the first europeans to set foot on Japan were portuguese.

I've read that the chinese are the first Asians in brazil to came on foot in 1812 way before the koreans and the Japanese came in the 00s and 60s so the chinese brazilians should of been the majority, not the Japanese, the Japanese are the second just like the Japanese in North America and Europe with all of latin America the Japanese are the second Asian group each, peru, brazil to argentina to chile!

@@Kawayoporu im brazilian. What i'm saying is that the portuguese were the very first europeans to land in Japan, so theres a long interaction between portuguese and japanese. In the americas i really don't know who came first, all i know is that japanese is the largest asian comunity in Brazil, they didn't went only to São Paulo, theres also a lot in Porto Alegre capital of Rio Grande do Sul state. I don't know many chinese descendents but one of the common nicknames for japanese descendents is "jápa" that is just a diminutive for japanese.

Tirando os mendigos e andarilhos pela rua, é interessante. Saobpaulo não é uma cudade muito bem cuidada. Aqui no Paraná tem muito japonês também porém a a maioria vive na zona rural nas cidades de interior boa parte são agricultores. Não se vê muitos pelas cidades. E ao contrariondonque muitos pensam a cidade mais japonesa do Brasil é a cidade de Assaí no Paraná e não São Paulo.
