It would be nice if you included more positive history of Crown Heights; i.e. famous residents, scientists, political leaders, architecture, civil rights history, innovators and inventors, THE WEST INDIAN LABOR DAY PARADE, and so much more...to start off the video talking about crime, racial tension, poverty, and gentrification does a disservice to people who don't really know the neighborhood. P.S. Crown Heights is a working class community, and to accommodate the residents, many businesses don't open until the afternoon, during school let-out/after-work hours, until 10/11 in the evening.

AK What are you doing? I'm clutching my pearls. This is "old home" day for me! This was my formative years neighborhood! This neighborhood is ripe with culture I had my elementary,Junior high and high school in this area. I met Mrs. Pearce at the Brooklyn museum and the what I call the "gigantic marble Lady". My sister and I lived in the Brooklyn public library and the botanic Gardens, there used to be a bread factory at Empire blvd. and the smell of in the afternoon when returning from junior high school.There used to be something called the Muse" This area also used to also be called Crow Hill.maybe 8 years ago they put up those street flags calling it Crow Hill again. I worked as a candy striper around the corner from my building on Prospect Place in Brooklyn Jewish Hospital. We moved to Crown Heights from Bed-Stuy when the last poor whites were still there. People often make this mistake the conflict was between the somewhat newly arrived Haitian community, they started arriving in the mid 70's. The Jewish world headquarters is on Eastern Parkway and Throop Ave. The block between St Johns and Lincoln Place on Franklin Avenue was were I bought my first cigarette from a Caribbean store for 5 cents on my way to high school one morning. I thought to myself "He didn't say anything so I guess it must be alright" (stupid me). I had an Italian boyfriend from the pizza shop on Union st. down the block from my high school. On Sunday's after church my sister and I skated at the rink on Empire Blvd.with the Hasidic children, we were the only people there,the church going African Americans and the Hasidic children. Eastern Parkway was our oasis. we would go to the Cameo theater on Eastern Parkway You mentioned. We called that castle on Atlantic the Armory. dean Street is where Chris Rock and his family lived.Thank you AK a wonderful job as always and a personal delight for me.💖

@pumacatD4 жыл бұрын
..and that seems already outdated - when I left my rent-controlled 2BR apt on Nostrand (& Sterling Pl) in 2016, the same 2BR under me was renting for $2400!! As the rents got higher the neighborhoods became more blant.. Generic Starbucks, banks and overpriced pretentious eateries replacing unique and flavorful joints. Newbies calling police on afternoon backyard BBQs which had their Reggae or such playing "too loud"..😒

AK - I thought this video was good, but somewhat skimpy. Most of the Hasidim in the area (the Chabad) do not, generally speaking, like to be photographed. I know it was a Monday, but initially thought it was a Saturday. Didn't see any Chabad on the street, though could have been afternoon prayers. Their headquarters are at 770 Eastern Parkway. The sign you saw posted on the light post was for a Farbrengen, a "give and take", or get-together; singing & talks by various rabbis. Maybe you already knew this. Anyway, Crown Heights has areas that are very residential, and there are many lively and commercial establishments a couple of blocks over from where you were. Actually the Chabad in Crown Heights are not as insular as many other "courts" in Brooklyn, and are now starting to welcome tourists and those interested in who they are and how they live their lives. I'm not Jewish, but have spent many years studying the various sects & courts both in Israel and America. I guess I was expecting more of a human interest story. I'm only a grain of sand on the beach! None-the-less, good video for what you wanted to capture.

In the 1950s and before about half the population was Catholic, mainly Italians and Irish, as well as Jewish. The Jews were secular immigrants and their children. The Jews there now are Orthodox. You should also be aware of the key imortance of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Ebbets Field where they played was in the south of the Crown Heights neighborhood down Bedford Avenue. They moved to LA in 1958. That was the beginning of Crown Heights decline, now reversed thankfully.
