The Upper West Side, Midtown Manhattan, and Times Square had a massive power outage around 7:00 PM on July 13, 2019 and I managed to be in the right place at the right time! I was dining at a restaurant on 72nd Street to prepare for the Manhattanhenge sunset when I saw notifications on my phone and decided to walk from 72nd Street to 42nd Street - Times Square via Broadway. The subways were dark and Times Square billboards were not turned on. In the end I just got to 42nd Street in time to see the sunset for Manhattanhenge. It was truly incredible to see.
This occurred on the 42nd anniversary of the 1977 Blackout. Crazy!

I'm sorry I thought I was already subbed but anyway I just subbed....Actionkid videos should have a hell of alot more views....I stumbled upon a video yesterday from another youtuber & I started going through his video page & his footage is often shaky & not in 1080p but most of the time its 720p & in & out of focus.....this punk had like 720k & 890k views on alot of his videos that were posted less than 2 months ago.....sometimes I think this generation is crazy.

@@solo401_ your right, I feel like the channel I'm talking about should have the amount of views I see under Actionkid videos & Actionkid should have his numbers....Now I'm a dragracing fan but I gotta admit that this particular guy I'm referring to content is not that great & his views blow all other dragracing channels out the water.....I mean he has videos that are close to 1 million that have not been up to long.....I almost feel that his channel is somehow mixed up with another channel .....maybe the algorithms of KZbin.....

I am traveling to NYC in a couple of days and have been watching your videos for the past week to get me ready. I have to say you seem like such a genuinely good person in all of your videos. I can feel the passion you have for the city listening to your narrating. I was in N.Y.C. for the previous 3 major Blackouts. In 1965 I was doing my homework in the Bronx, when the lights went out. In 1977 I was at home in Washington Heights when everything went black. In 2003 I had just boarded the Downtown Number 4 train at Yankee Stadium (the last stop above ground)! The doors closed and suddenly there was a thump, then nothing. Someone heard on a radio that there was a blackout. We didn't know at the time that it covered much of the Northeastern U.S.! We were able to pry one side of a door open, and everybody got out. I went straight to a store and bought up batteries and cold drinks (it was one of the hottest days of the year). If the outage had happened just a few minutes later, we would have been stuck underground overnight! Thank you for documenting this one!

Whenever there is a power cut I think that it is just a little reminder of the real world, I mean there have been many more generations of human beings who have lived lives without the technology we tend to take for granted nowadays. I am glad though that the power was restored and I hope that not too many people suffered because of the outage.

I live in France in a small village, between midnight and 6am they turn the street lights off to save power (like all maybe 10 of them) and then on top of that here is France it is usual to have shutters that you close as well after your windows.I would not like to walk around my house,! This really shows us though that whatever fancy electrical stuff you have, once the power goes out, its goodnight. Manhattanhenge was fab!

Ak - Another great video. Who knew? You just take things as they come and go with the flow. For some people a power outage charges their battery (no pun intended here), and it's time to party, and for others, they just want to get where they're going. But, yeah, I can imagine people getting stuck on an elevator; especially if they're by themselves. What must be going through their mind? The thing about something like this is, all the fallout just has this trickle down affect, and whether it's a business or whatever, it takes them awhile before they get their marbles lined up again. Anyway, thanks for these very informative and at times entertaining videos. You're doing a great service for the city of NY and everyone who has the ability to watch them. Over and out.

Look at all the people from the underground that were forced to surface and walk to their destination. Personally, I think it's rather interesting to observe how "normal people" react when one aspect of their life is removed. The subway or elevator are two places I wouldn't want to be when NYC loses power regardless of the duration. It's really amazing to see how calm all the curious people are during the electric grid disruption. If this outage would have lasted more than half a day, no doubt all chaos would ensue. Whats more amazing is this power outage comes 42 years to the day after the great blackout of 1977 when ALL of New York was in the dark. Lights or no lights, 👍🏼to all the people that are still drawn to Times Square! We ❤️ you NYC! Shoutout to Action Kid for this incredible insider view of "Manhattan in Mayhem".

This video is better than any news report of the black out. Gives a great overview of how the blackout affected that section of Manhattan. ActionKid on the scene! Interesting that half of Times Square had power.

@@ActionKid Think about it and do some investigating. 42nd street had half lit and half dark, (only street like that)? 42 years to the day that the outage in 1977 occurred, and I was told 42,000 lost power. Not coincidence obviously. I was told that these are only a few of the 42 references. Why 42 and what are the other ones?

A little tip, if you find yourself without power and happen to be near a Starbucks, from my personal experience they will comp your coffee since most of them I have been at at least didn’t have back up power.

This blackout struck exact to the date 42 years ago on July 13, 1977. Only thing back then the blackout continued on July 14. History has a way of repeating itself but not to that devastating extent. "Those were the days my friend" as the song says.

10:05.....seeing that southbound #3 train that tried to coast by 66th St.....as a retired motorman.....I'm not sure if I would even try to coast further.....if you get stuck.... you'll have people stuck in dark tunnels......might have been better to stop adjacent to the station.....easier to evacuate if necessary.....

Good point. I was wondering how that #3 train was still running if there was no power. The trains can still coast to the next station?

Down here in Panama City fl. we know about power outages. The hurricane last oct. I lost power for 3 almost 4 weeks. It was like a sauna. 70% of trees down. But NY with all the banks and elevators??? Being stuck in those would not be fun. Be safe Kenneth.

I remember a power outage in NYC back when I lived there that was from The World Trade Center all the way to 42nd street. I had to walk in the pouring rain that entire distance to finally get to a subway with power at 42nd street. It sucked because all the buses and cabs were taken and the traffic lights were out so traffic got stuck all over the city. It was not a fun experience.
