Walking the Camino. The Best Rain Wear, Jacket and Pants

It rains on the Camino, sometimes a lot. What Rain Wear works best and why. I explain what we packed in order to stay dry and warm as we trekked 800 km, a lot of it in the rain!
I'm a seasoned, "senior" walker of the Camino and other trails, I share my tips and insights to walking long distances successfully.
These videos will appeal to older, more senior walkers and first timers. I share my learnings on how to get the most out of your hike.
Of course if you just want practical tips it doesn't matter your age or experience, you will find a treasure trove of insights!
I have decided to share these videos based on the idea "what I would have liked to have known "pre-walk" that I know now.

I just completed my Francis from Jean-Port to Finisterre, I disagree with everything you suggest! I am 64 and based upon your gear selection you obviously did not carry your own pack because it would have completely soaked thru. Anyone reading my comments Please do not purchase this gear not that it is not excellent gear but not if your doing the Camino in the traditional Way. Buy the Spanish made and purpose built and designed ALTUS Poncho as it will keep you and ! Your gear dry in horrific but challenging conditions in particular the 4 days of the Beautiful Mesita section. Buy your Altus prior to your trip as they could very well be sold out because that's how popular they are. Buen Camino PismoRichy back on Camino Primitivo April 2025.

Hi Pismorchy? and thx for your feedback. Nothing like healthy disagreement...if you read anything online /youtube about gear (shoes being the worst) they is always a battle between who wears what and what is the best. The Poncho vs Raincoat is right up there with passionate advocates for both. Having done 5 Caminos (was this your first?) and countless other LD walks I'm a raincoat guy...i like to be able to take my pack off or access it easily can't do that with a poncho on - and yes contrary to yiour accusation - i carry my bag, my back pack has a cover, my stuff inside is in waterproof bags and I have a strap on umbrella - I'm dry as tinder in a cave. Ponchos have their benefits no question but I'm talking about what works for me after years of walking (including the Norte last year to Muxia , 1,000km passing Finisterre enroute) . People are free to do their own research and figure out what works for them, my word is far from gospel. Buen Camino

Gore-Tex is neither the “standard” for waterproofing nor does it mean the fabric will be waterproof. All it means is there’s a thin membrane sandwiched in the fabric that is intended to keep water out while at the same time allowing body vapor to escape. Most experienced hikers don’t use it because it’s expensive and doesn’t usually work. You’d be better off with a simple coated nylon jacket with big pit zips for ventilation, or a poncho

The rain pants are great for a man but not a petite woman. Are there any rain pants that are for petite women?

Well i have not shopped for that personally but I'm sure there are - lots of petite people on the Camino. I would try outdoor stores, Amazon, sports stores and golf stores, look at children's sizes and if worse comes to worse cuts a pair that are bigger and hem the bottom

Almost any outdoor store will sell them - and they come in different sizes. I chose different colours and sizes so i could easily ID them in my pack. Hope this helps (Amazon my sell them too)

Hi Sandy...just to share a couple of thoughts from Germany where we often get more rain than we would like. I've rethought rain gear over the years and find that a combination of an umbrella and rain jacket works better for me..e.g. Euroschirm Light Trek Ultra (the silver reflective surface is a great sun shade for hot days). Not only does an umbrella keep the water off you and keep you drier and warmer...it also prevents your jacket from wetting out...and means you can open it up some for improved ventillation. And all of that is a huge mood lifter in rain. (Granted if its windy or on certain terrain you may want to opt for just rain jacket). Instead of rain pants, you may also want to try a rain skirt/kilt - yes for guys as well. Can put it on in 30 seconds...boots no problem and ventillation is great (but may be more challenging on windy days). Best from Europe.

Thx for the interesting insights! I am planning ion getting an umbrella for Le Puys - for the sun and rain so great advice. Thx for the feedback ...and being of Scottish descent i have no problem wearing a rain skirt - we call that a kilt laddie!

You will walk alone.....I am a tall man and will not go within 2 metres of an umbrella or sunshade, there are distracted idiots who will take your eye out with them!
