Lovely to see all the old structures dating back 100s of years, and get a sense of how the city used to be before it was developed, all the old mills etc that relied on the water to operate. All the rivers seem clean too, where's all the litter and flytipping. As for walking through Sheffield with your waders on it's great to get people thinking without them understanding what you've been doing, something they probably wouldn't understand. 😁

Hello Patrick, Wow this brings back memories, river Porter. At 10.50 the wall to the left was the back of Hoffman’s garage. I started work aged 15 yrs Jan 1963, there was an area of space behind the garage triangular shaped Mechanics use to sit out at break times and to pass the time on brought air rifles to work. Empty cans where taped up and thrown upstream plan was to sink them before they went under the culvert. They became very good shots at moving targets. Looking upstream to Summerfield street you could see James Neil’s (I think) an imposing building all brick. One day an older chap brought a 2.2 rifle and fired it at Neils wall all we saw was a puff of brickwork, crazy times. I have seen the Porter just a trickle and also a raging torrent. Also remember walking past S&E arcade is the morning to work. Then the errands 22 iced sally lunns 14 buttered, 9 Hot pies, not my happiest task! All around this area seemed to have character or is it me looking through rose tinted specs. Love the Peak District, Derbyshire. Now in Hampshire for the last 2 years, do I miss the North, let you guess that one. Great expeditions and commentaries, thanks Patrick. Best Graham

Hi Graham yes I was born at Nethergreen in 1955 so new the area round the Porter well, although probably did,nt venture down to Pomona area until we had discovered pubs. Great times we had and I,am glad I still live in the area, the pubs up Ecclesall Road are still one of my favourite haunts, great to talk to you, all the best Pat

Stunning! It's really interesting to see how the construction methods have changed. It's a testament to the early Victorian engineers that the brick sections are still standing, whereas part of a later concrete section collapsed.

Danielle Britton Hi Danielle hi again, this was my first introduction to culverts and I was amazed at how attractive the brickwork was and admiration to the Victorian builders. Hi Pat, those light painting shots are quite something, really illuminates where you are and picks out the detail. I can now see that that takes some time to do and its really very much appreciated. Cracking photo's once again, love that light painting. The irony isn't wasted on me....the 1800 brickwork is still there like it was built yesterday...and the stuff we did in (the 1960's probably) has collapsed. Says it all.... Brilliant mate, enjoyed it very much.

Hi Paul, yes the photos worked out well like most things I had to take several to get the perfect shot I was after. A brilliantly documented walk Patrick.I'd imagine the culverts were built by a mixture of local labour and possibly Irishmen. Gives you a humble appreciation of their labours. Thanks for the insight.

H Cyril, the brickwork is amazing to say a lot of it maybe 150 years old makes you appreciate the skill that went into building the culverts. The fact that the most modern section through Decathlon has collapsed proves the quality of Victorian builders. thanks for comments Pat

George Gunn hi George, a bit of both I think but I know my limits, I worked as a Electrical Power Engineer for 40 years on very high voltages and you learn to risk access each situation, always have a plan B in case it does go wrong. Life is a risk at time and probably most dangerous thing I do is driving. Thanks for interesting comments all the best Pat
