Hi Paul, have tried a tarp occasionally, must admit I tend to only use my bivvy bag when I know it is not going to rain especially if cooking outside etc. I tend not to use a tarp because when I look at all the gear, poles etc I might as well take a lightweight tent.I use the bivvy bag when dry forecast and sleep with to unzipped, like you say gets a bit damp if closed in. Interesting comments thanks Pat

Plus the idea is to be as low profile and inconspicuous as possible. A tarp (often bright blue, though yes of course you can get military greens) would have been like having a giant flag on the hilltop saying "Heeey look at me up here" Then there's the fact that the slightest amount of wind will turn a tarp into a sail :O

This was one of the first of Pat Dickenson's videos that I watched. It was very worthwhile to re-watch this production, due to the concentration of information contained. In fact, rather than pacing back and forth waiting for Pat's upcoming masterpiece, I have been watching many of Pat's adventures again. Now that I know the outcome of the storyline, so to speak, I can focus on the information and details that Pat has selected to present. I realize that among his skillset are focus, splendid editing and willingness to make the required effort. The world simply does not have enough of this, these days. In this video I had a good laugh over the pub commentary, beginning around the 2:45 minute mark, and the description of the state one may achieve for twenty Quid in a good Chesterfield pub. Marvelous, Pat.

Only just started at looking at wild camp videos. I'm 67 now and did my first wild camp when I was 15 " 1965 " Went to Bridge Of Orchy, and wild camped by Loch Tulla. Cloth tent with tie front door, no sewn in ground sheet in those days, primus pump stove and being a Londoner never heard of the dreaded midge. Happy days, love your videos Patrick.

Well Patrick, I have now watched all your vids except the last two, from the start over the last week or so. My wife has a quote, "Daft as a box of frogs" and I must agree where your concerned, especially after the pub crawl, never laughed so much for a while. You seem to be haphazard but I know you plan these escapades and make them look as its just another jolly old walk. I would never do what seems so natural to you, I swore to my self, never to kip in a tent again when I left the army in 1972 and we did sleep in some very snowy cold places without modern sleeping bags etc. I have kept to that promise.:) I have never been to Sheffield and what impressed me from this vid, it looks like the houses are an after thought that take second precedence from trees. Absolutly brilliant and you don't see this from ground level. Whish we had fish and chip trees in my area, they are very rare. One thing we do have in common, is a love of real ale. Have you never considered doing the Wainright coast to coast walk and wild camping from start to finish? It would take some planning but what a series of youtube vlogs that would make. My very best regards, Brian the Wonderer.

Great, interesting camp. I was shocked you were going cliff-side of the fence! I am glad there was space for your bivvy bag and that you had a harness for good measure: getting up for a pee and forgetting where you where doesn't bear thinking about. Yes, on balance the possibilities for dark skies probably rules in favour of LEDs. Some lights are oh so smart and only come on when walking by or standing in the bus shelter. Saves some energy at least. Fantastic video as always Pat. Atb,Terry

I'm living in a beautiful place called, North cave in East Yorkshire. My house over looks the Yorkshire wolds. There are many great rural areas to see. With streams running through our area. I'm a life long blade, and my favourite brew is a farmer's on draught. When I go to see Sheffield United we call into a cafe and grab a brekky and a pint. Best cure for pre match nerves. Love been in Sheffield visiting family and friends. You should do a camp out near our area. I'll keep you fed and watered in our local. Loving all the videos you post. Great to see.

Hi Pat great video :) I'm an old camper who started at about age twelve and kept at it as a journeyman rigger, scaffolder and crane operator, going all over Australia to construction and mining jobs for forty yrs, I never stayed in hotels or motels on the way to and from work and always camped out. One time I was sent to a power station in rural Queensland and since they never provided accommodation we were paid x$$ per day to find our own .. I found a spot along a similar fence line above a road embankment and slept there for nine nights, I had a shower in the Power Station before work every day .. it was one of the best times I ever had. The last trip was just on nine yrs ago I needed to go to Nimbin in New South Wales and camped out for two nights .. when I saw yr face and heard yr voice I wondered if we had ever met, I have never been to the UK so it would have had to have been in Australia .. cheers from Brisbane.

I still love watching your short very entertaining videos love your wild camps. I do the Ridgeway about every 2 years it’s about 87 miles but I do about 120 miles I wild camp along the way mostly woods, I used first few time a Jack Wolfskin stargazer tent lovely little solo tent but now I’ve gone for a lighter more expensive Hilleberg Enan lovely tent comes in at 1.1kg weight. Thank you for the enjoyment you bring. By the way yes I could smell those Fish n chips 🤤all best GARY

That's a great spot Patrick. I'm not massively familiar with that part of city, I lived in Stockbridge for a year in my teens. I recognise the quarry from my many drives to GoOutdoors from Chesterfield along that road. Some nice cafes around where you live too, The Rude Shipyard being one of my favs :-) Thanks for sharing

Hi Dean, nice to hear from you, you can get some great bargains at Gooutdoors now they price match and knock 10% off, got some new boots recently a bargain. The west of Sheffield heavily populated difficult to find a nice site with a view, many I looked at had a public path running nearby. This site above Homebase was perfect as it was secluded and had a view. thanks for your comments all the best Pat

Patrick Dickinson Hi , I am interested in your videos, being born and brought up in that area. I Remember camping near Castleton in mid 60s at Christmas. With an old army bivvy tent and a massive polythene fly sheet bought from God knows where. Many layers on for the night, and a candle burning throughout the the night. No fancy survival stuff then.😉
