Ironbridge is a cast iron arch bridge that crosses the River Severn in Shropshire, England. It was completed in 1779 and opened to traffic in 1781. The bridge was designed by architect Thomas Farnell's Pritchard and built by Abraham Darby III, who used 378 tons of cast iron to construct the bridge. The Iron Bridge was the first major bridge in the world to be built of cast iron and had a considerable influence on developments in the fields of technology and architecture. The successful use of cast iron in 1781 pioneered the choice of that material for many subsequent bridges, and cast iron arches of considerable size became a feature of many 19th-century bridges. The bridge became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and remains an iconic feature of the Industrial Revolution. The bridge is toll-free and has been open to the public since 1950. The bridge is an important landmark in the history of engineering and architecture and is a testament to the ingenuity and innovation of the people of the Industrial Revolution.

Lovely memories of Ironbridge. I was born at The Lady Forestor Hospital, Broseley in 1959 and lived with my parents at 12 Hodge Bower, next to the Crown public house until 1964 when we moved up the hill to Madeley and the then new housing estate of Hills Lane Drive. Fond memories. Have lived down south for many years but try and visit Ironbridge whenever possible.
