When I went to Nicaragua 12 years ago more or less I ate in Masaya with Dad. It was a local vendor. I ate and asked for a drink. The lady proceeded to make a drink in her kitchen. I drank the juice and we went on our way. For 7 days I was sick. Mom took me to the family doctor. Mind you we no longer reside in Nicaragua. The Doctor and his family went above and beyond and I was able to get on track. I share my experience as I am bit traumatized. Lol!!! My stomach was no longer use to the food in Nicaragua.
@BucketListTravellers

Hi Rico, so sorry to hear that you had this traumatic experience! We did get food poisoning in Nicaragua, however that was only due to our own cooking! We never had any issues with eating local food or drinking refresos naturales. Perhaps our stomaches got used to the food?

The British had influence in Nicaragua…Settlement of English people along the Caribbean Coast, or Miskito Coast, of Nicaragua began in 1633. The area was controlled by Britain until 1860, and eventually integrated into Nicaragua by 1894.

We’ve been here since the end of February and we have yet to experience the “spring-like climate”. Yes, it is cooler than most of the country, but it is still hot and we continue to run air con at night with fans. We will be here for 8 more months, as we are moving on to Guatemala next. We do expect the temps to drop in December and January, but we refuse to be here next March when the hottest months come back.

Hi there, thanks for the update on how you are travelling! Are you enjoying the lifestyle otherwise? We loved the cafes there in particular. Have you visited San Rafael Del Norte? It is a small, yet charming town with a great cafe! It should be a little cooler in Dec and Jan. We were there in April 2021 and after a year in Granada found it a pleasant change! We were using only fans in Granada too to keep the electricity costs down.

Hi Banana Patch, quick answer around $1500 a month, we'll put together a video about it in more detail for you. Matagalpa can still be warm and sticky during the day but cools off at night, which is really pleasant (and sometimes cold!). There is a decent sized expat community around Matagalpa as well. Esteli, Jinotega and Jinotepe are other areas we recommend you look at for similar weather.

Ok guys, we are seeing online that a couple could live a nice but semi-frugal life in Matagalpa for $1000/month. Our budget won’t be that tight but curious if your spending would suggest that is true ? ( my wife is a Nica so we wont be getting gringo pricing ) 😃
@BucketListTravellers
@BucketListTravellers 2 жыл бұрын
Our budget staying in the Colonial house in Granada was around $1500 a month. We really didn't need to stay there as it was much more than we needed, but it was our 'covid prison' so we decided to make it enjoyable! You should be able to find a comfortable home for $600/month (non gringo pricing) and food is generally very cheap at markets. So $1000 is realistic. $1500 is very comfortable. Just be careful with your electricity usage as it is really expensive once you hit a certain threshold. We used fans only and had a bill around $50 a month.

Hi Senay, sorry we don't know the visa processes with Ethiopia and the USA. For us as Australians, you just have to fill out an online form on the USA embassy website. To enter Nicaragua, you receive a 3 month visa on arrival, so as long as you can leave Ethiopia you should be ok to enter Nicaragua. If you are able to fly to Costa Rica, you could enter Nicaragua via the land border. Thanks for watching and good luck.

Question? I saw one video where you said you both lived comfortably on 1100 US per month in Nicaragua. Is that an accurate estimate? Did that include everything? Or was that the basic living expenses.
@BucketListTravellers
@BucketListTravellers 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Randy, the cost of living in Nicaragua can vary a lot depending on the type of lifestyle you're after and the part of the country you are living in. You can be quite comfortable on $1100 US per month in a smaller house or apartment, shopping at local markets, using public transport or walking to get around and using fans rather than air conditioning for keeping cool. For us, we spent on average $1400 US per month - we generally shopped local and kept electricity prices down and we mainly used public transport and walking to get around. Our biggest expense was accommodation, and we stayed in some really nice places. We were also there when tourist numbers were very low due to covid, so were able to get some good deals. We found that prices for most things were about a third of what you would pay in places like the US, Canada and Australia. The exception to that was shopping in supermarkets and buying electronics and imported goods
