Perfect timing for a Gene Autry mention. In 1946’s Hollywood Christmas Parade, then called, The Santa Claus Lane Parade, Gene Autry was a few spots ahead of the parade’s grand finale… Santa Claus. It caused him, and Champion, his horse, to be ignored, but the children could be heard to say, ‘Here comes Santa Claus!’ repeatedly. On October 6, 1947, Gene introduced the world to his Christmas hit, “Here Comes Santa Claus,” inspired by his experience in the previous year’s parade. Here comes Santa Claus, kids, right down Santa Claus lane. Happy Holidays!

@ Ah! So glad you liked it! “Here Comes Santa Claus,” hit number 5 on the country charts, and 9 on the pop charts, in 1947. As recently as 2022, it managed to find number 25 on Billboard’s Hot 100! Not bad for a then 75 year old treasure!

Steve, The California Angels conducted spring training in Palm Springs from 1961 to 1992 under the ownership of Gene Autry a part time resident of Palm Springs. Also the Angels Class A minor league affiliate played their games there from 1986 to 1992. Bob V. ( I don't know why but I was a little surprised seeing the high school. I wouldn't have thought there would be that many school age children living in Palm Springs )
@steveinpalmspringscaАй бұрын
Hi Bob, thanks for the update. I remember them being here, I just didn’t remember the years. And as for kids here in Palm Springs, you are right. We probably have fewer kids in the city of Palm Springs than any of the other cities in the greater Palm Springs Coachella Valley area. But, Palm Springs has a population of about 50,000 people, so even though there are fewer kids in our city, even a very small percentage is still quite a few. 👍

lol I said to the TV, why are they watering the sidewalks?! Grocery stores of yesteryear; Von’s, Safeway, Alpha Beta, Market Basket, Food Giant, Lucky’s, and many other independent grocers. Yes you are correct Steve; Gene Autry owned the California Angels. The foul ball risk to car owners who visit the library, can be mitigated by the city by erecting netting to the baseball field.

All of California should adopt the same ordnance Palm Springs has about loitering people. We need to get the people off the streets and some place where they will be safer. The new plastic benches look a lot lower than the benches I remember in the parks. This is a beautiful park. Thanks for showing us around. You and Jim take care.

@RockinStacyАй бұрын
Autry purchased the Angels franchise in December 1960 after being convinced to make a bid by baseball executives. He paid $300,000 to O'Malley for the rights to the name, which had been used by a previous Los Angeles franchise in 1892. He owned them until 1997. It always amazes me how clean PS is. I don't think I've ever seen a piece of litter during your walks, no matter where you are there. From this, it looks like the homeless may be utilizing the homeless center. If so, that's wonderful news!
@user-kp1un5eq9mАй бұрын
Perhaps the homeless moved over to the Prescott Preserve, the former golf course south of Ramon and east of Sunrise?
@RockinStacyАй бұрын
@@user-kp1un5eq9m This fall they just opened the new Homeless Navigation Center. They have 50 beds and 80 individual transitional housing units. The housing units are basically small apartments with 10 of those sized for families. It's looking as though this new facility is working well, thankfully. The facility offers a wide range of services, which were desperately needed. The estimated construction cost of 29 million.
@steveinpalmspringscaАй бұрын
Thanks for the update, Stacy. And that’s funny that you mention the lack of litter here. That’s something I never even thought about or even noticed. I guess I just take it for granted how clean everything is here. I did take a walk the other day, though, but I haven’t shared yet, and there was some litter and I do remember being surprised. That might be a good topic for a future video. Thanks for the idea. 😄👍

Steve: How do you keep pace with the rising home values and the property tax reassessment each year? A million dollar home would carry a 1.5% tax levy amounting to $15,000. A significant bite out of a retirees budget. I'm also in California and feel the pain paying taxes on unrealized gains twice per year.
@steveinpalmspringscaАй бұрын
Hi Donn, they are only allowed to reassess a very small percentage chair so it doesn’t go out much each year. At least not for us. And we have a much smaller house so the value hasn’t gone up as much as many of the other larger homes.
