First they shut down the power project, then they stopped fishing and logging. Without industry, how is a town supposed to survive? The environmentalists had their way with Aberdeen and then just left her there to die.

This breaks my heart so much. I lived behind there when it was being built. I grew up in that mall. I smoked my first smoke in the parking lot there. So many memories if that place being packed constantly. Hanging out there as a teenager, seeing movies and hanging out with friends. It's a relic frozen in apocalyptic time. I hope one day this poor town can find it's way up again. I miss what my hometown used to be.

I lived behind this mall for 5 years in my young adulthood and spent a good portion of my teenage years here because it was quiet, dry, and had a very relaxed attitude. The vendors were always really kind to me. After I had my son I would basically spend his first winter strapping him to me and taking him on walks while he napped. He learned to crawl and walk here. As it sank further into deterioration (The roof had pretty serious issues and there were many leaky spots throughout the building. I assume this played a part in the eventual shutdown of the entire mall after a snowstorm caused further damage) you could walk the perimeter of the building and notice how nature was reclaiming it. Bats made a nest on the roof at one point, a small section of grass in the parking lot had native orchids growing, trees in the parking lot were surrounded by saplings, and there was a pretty large array of mushrooms that sprang up from time to time. I had been going to this mall since I was 10 and for the fifteen years before it closed it never reached its former glory, but it definitely felt like a community center. I'll always have fond memories of this place. I spent 15 years hearing about what a dump my town is, but now wealthier people are moving here in droves and it's hard to buy a home, rental prices are skyrocketing, historical buildings are torn down or just burn down and the homeless population needs support they're not getting. It's hard to think about being priced out of a place very few seemed to give a shit about until recently.

Thanks for sharing your story, Ben. I had no idea that Aberdeen was starting to see growth again. That does seem like sort of a paradoxical turn of events.

this man is very derogatory in his comments yes everything is falling but in the 1980s when I was raising my kids there I worked in the log yard the log yards ran almost twenty-four hours a day the Mills and the paper mills ran day and night, the mall was extremely busy in those days the economy's dropped so Aberdeen is falling into the slump but used to be a very thriving metropolis.

If Seattle would just stop dumping drug users on Aberdeen and allow the community to receive a more fair share of state funds, things could be fixed up and there could be a sense of growth and revival. As it is Seattle and its surrounding areas seem to not care about the rest of the state.

@@nomadben When they get out of jail, or rehab, the city (and other cities and counties in this state--some I know from other STATES) give them a bus ticket to wherever they want to go. Over time, everyone goes where their friends go (the ones they make in jail). So they all tend to go to the same places. Western WA has a mild climate and a lot of enablers.

A word about the art in Aberdeen. One of the good things about Aberdeen is the Aberdeen Art Center. It is an incredible gallery with many excellent local artists. The owners do a lot for the city of Aberdeen, such as refinishing the statues around town, and putting on the Rain Glow festival. Although there are many dead areas/ things in Aberdeen, art is not one of them. Visit my friends at the Aberdeen Art Gallery, and see!

I lived in Aberdeen fall 2019 to the start of covid. Moved up from Southern California to play baseball at the actually beautiful college. The city, the weather, and the people were a complete culture shock to me from what I was used to, and worsened my depression the longer I lived there. The mall was incredibly eerie while a few more small shops were open at the time than this video. The Sears closed about a month after moving there. But I would find myself walking through at least once a week to go to the Mexican food spot. It was the only thing that reminded me of home. Most malls are like this now. I would love to see a rebirth. It could happen, just like the stock market goes up and down, mall shopping could do the same. I miss malls. On line shopping is convenient and economical, but malls always had such a vibrant atmosphere, it was always a pleasure to shop in them. As for the town of Aberdeen, it’s been dead for years and years. If it ever has a chance of resurrection, somebody will have to get very creative, and the whole town will have to change its mindset.

Has nothing to do with the population.... Aberdeen in fact only has about 16,000 people and I remember in the early 90's, that mall was always packed.

You were kinda rude! We have seen bad times in this little town but many of us saw it at it's high point when there wasn't a mall but downtown stores that where booming, there was another mall in town when this on was built both did well for years. Please go back where you came from!

He makes this mall out to be worse than it is. It is actually being used more now. He also says that a lot of the places are closed when they’re still open to this day. This video just makes me mad. He skips around the open store’s and parts of the mall. Also great trash talking dude!

I think the mall losing Kmart was a glimpse into the malls future when a mall loses one of their anchor stores and do not replace it with something else that is a tell sign of the malls future just like years later losing JC PENNYS and they replace it with the extreme fun center as a anchor place

funny. but arnt all malls a dated concept? truely depressing malls contain hundreds of aholes yelling back and forth about various minimal concerns of a personal nature, while refusing to move out of the pedestrians way along the walk..... the shops support them and if you might need a wig....they have you covered( pun intended). a desolate mall, a dead mall.....this is the sacred way of the hundred million dollar mall. they all die, as well they should. Imagine the elitist golf course that will eventually take thier place...so pristine.....so expensive. im assuming the tax payers will foot the bill one way or another.....

The Extreme Fun Center used to be the Tilt Arcade. The ten screen movie theater is in the very back of the mall and not visible from the main road. There used to be a Radio Shack inside the mall, but it closed ten years ago. This mall used to have a K-Mart and a JC Penney's ther, but they also pulled out about the same time. What a dump this mall is.

Many things, an arcade the extreme fun center, sears, a music store and lesson place, and a bunch of locally owned shops with comic books and crafts. Real sad it's gone down. The arcade was the last to stay open until it closes on the 18th of August. I worked there and was able to go into the abandoned mall part and it's been completely torn apart by the homeless that would break in.

I would like to point out every mall have there humble beginnings to their peaks and their decline and unfortunately their end I would say this mall was built in the late 1970’s to about early 1980’s by looking at how the mall looks and I would say it probably peaked or it’s heyday during 1998 to at least 2008 and after that it started to go down hill from there

“Aberdeen mall” lol That’s south shore xD Decrepit was inaccurate at the time of this video. Now on the other hand :C At least you could still get in there. THATS TAQUERIA LOS GAILLOS / SAN JOSE SHOW SOME RESPECT! 🤤🤤🤤 Fun center is still going strong though! 6 years later 💪 Actively went out of the way to NOT show tectonic comics- probably because it was bustling and didn’t fit the narrators “this place sucks” motives. Doesn’t even know the name of all that glitters obvi not a local - has “no desire to go in there” -cannot be trusted to give accurate tours😂 only troll tours🤣 Doesn’t even know if it’s the only theater in town and calls it a small one LOL city boy you busted- that theater is Huge compared to others in the county! Thanks for visiting- byyyyeeeeee
