Walking tour of the Garden District in New Orleans

The Garden District in New Orleans was the first suburb. Around the 1840’s, wealthy merchants in the French Quarter started to build large homes with beautiful landscapes in the Garden District.
The architectural styles of the homes varies from Victorian, Italianate, Queen Anne, Elizabethan, and many more. And not only mansions are in the area, but also smaller ‘cottages’ including shotgun styles, ‘Camelbacks’, and doubles with Victorian fronts.
The Garden District area was formerly Plantation land. Building in this area provided larger lots on which to build, versus the original city of New Orleans, aka, the French Quarter, with limited size plots of land.
The Garden District, with oak tree lined streets, with luxurious gardens behind cast iron fences, contains one of the largest inventories of properties built in the 1800’s in the United States.
There are also commercial properties in the Garden District, mostly located on Magazine Street, Prytania Street, and Washington Avenue. And Lafayette Cemetery #1 is located on Washington Avenue across the Street from the world famous Commander’s Palace Restaurant.
