I love the grandeur and dreariness of "Flight of the Ornithocheirus" (24:48 - 27:14) and "Secret Flight" (28:36 - 30:27), the primal feel of danger in "Iguanodon Chase" (27:14 - 28:36), and the bleakness and sense of impending doom in "Tyrannosaurus" (47:38 - 50:38). All of these are examples of how the music of the "Walking with" series so perfectly captures the primeval aura exerted so potently by the episodes themselves. It is because of this soundtrack that I associate the Mesozoic world largely with rain, mist and gloom. To this day, when I look out of my window and the rain is coming in torrents, I seem to see the majestic Ornithocheirus laboriously navigating his way through the clouds. Equally, however, when I see that the sky is cloudless and blue, and the world around me is dry, I think of the lumbering Tyrannosaurus. If anything, the score of "Walking with Beasts" has influenced me even more. A few years after watching the series for the first time, my obsession with the prehistoric world and its weird inhabitants led to my ecstatic discovery of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "The Lost World," which remains my favourite book of all time, as well as the works of Sir Henry Rider Haggard, one of which ("Allan and the Ice-Gods") tells the powerful story of a handful of cavemen's struggles against the terrible onslaught of the Ice Age. And the reason I have any interest in science at all can be assigned to the "Walking with" series. The effect they and their music had on me as a child was so powerful that it would be no overstatement to say they changed the way I think, the way I interpret what my senses tell me. The very thought that I am living on the same world, standing on the same ground, breathing in the same air, that once belonged to the titan beasts of a bygone age -- the very thought can send something approaching awe into my soul. In the words of Professor Richard Dawkins, "Haven't you just breathed in a nitrogen atom that was once breathed out by the third iguanodon to the left of the tall cycad tree?"

Ok, Giant of the Skies, Spirits of the Ice Forest, Torosaurus Lock Horns, and Islands Of Green all hit differently. I've never watched Walking with Dinosaurs when I was young, but they somehow feel nostalgic. Likely because I've listened to them before on a different video, being Life and Death of a Carnotaurus, when I was young. That thing was made 5 years ago, at least in 2023.

This soundtrack brings back so many memories of when I was a boy. I've been revisiting this as the release date of 'Prehistoric Planet' draws near. I've watched quite a few dinosaur documentaries, but I don't think any get as good as the 'Walking With Dinosaurs'. Though that is partly because of Branaugh's narration and the soundtrack. But the main thing is that WWD feels epic in a way that no documentary since has been. The on site filming and score are sweeping. It also doesn't fall into the traps of showing dinosaurs as monsters or as too human. It shows them as they were, as animals.

Prehistoric planet is just brass, as if all was an spectacle. It is indeed, but it lacks the individuality of the animals. This soundtrack feels personal, special, were each single song represents a time, place and animal that we will never see again in the series. And I think that is what made this documentary special, it was an antology of unique stories about birth and death.

36:34 Kenneth Branagh: "The seasons draw on, and for the first time in four months, the Sun sets. Autumn has arrived, and the forest prepares for a polar winter." (aerial shot of the misty and foggy Antarctic forest, followed by two scenes of the northbound migrating Muttaburrasaurus langdoni.) 37:04-37:19 (unused music) "Up and down the river valleys, the Muttaburrasaurus sense the change and began their long trek north." (fade deep within the forest, where a mother Muttaburrasaurus and her child are now lost and they noisily call out to the herd.) "Occasionally, some of these giant migrants gets lost in the forest. But what for them is a minor problem, can mean life or death for the Leallynasaura clan." (cut to the clan of Leallynasaura amicgraphica who're now unable to hear any sign of danger.) "The noise these huge herbivores make, prevents the Leallynasaura sentry from hearing other, more threatening sounds." (cut to the male Allosaurus robustus, who is now stalking with ease, thanks to the lost Muttaburrasaurus.)

46:40 (unused music) Kenneth Branagh: "One Dinosaur that specializes in defense, is the extraordinary Ankylosaurus. They are evolved to withstand attack even from giant predators like Tyrannosaurus. At seven tons, Ankylosaurus are so heavily armored that even their eyelids are hardened. And if that wasn't enough, they have a formidable club on the end of their tails. But sadly, not even these magnificent creatures have any defense against the natural forces that are suffocating their world."

40:02-40:42 Kenneth Branagh: "Liopleurodon! At 150 tons, it is the largest & most powerful carnivore ever to live on the planet. This male measures a colossal 25 meters, and is big, even for his kind. His size means he's probably over a hundred years old. He too detected the mother's distress from a distance. Liopleurodon has a directional sense of smell. Two separate chambers in his nose work in the same way as a pair of ears, pinpointing exactly where a smell is coming from. A sophisticated tracking device, steering the largest carnivorous jaws ever known. Each one of Liopleurodon's four flippers is over three meters long, giving him enough power to guide his huge bulk effortlessly through the water."

Kenneth Branagh: "In the heat of the Dry Season, the Placerias herd spreads out over the scrubland to feed. Suddenly, the warm breeze changes and there is a scent of fear in the air. 1:46 Postosuchus, a merciless ambush predator, the largest carnivore on Earth. The terrified Placerias flee, but they are desperately slow, and one of them now carries a mortal wound. Their tormentor is a distant cousin of the Dinosaurs, evolved from the same reptilian ancestors. But unlike them, she is too front heavy to run on two legs. Yet the Postosuchus is easily fast enough to keep pace with the herd. Eventually, a combination of shock and blood loss defeats the wounded Placerias. The carnivore's bite has done its job. The Placerias is now too weak to fight, and the Postosuchus has an easy meal."

@@TTD94 Indeed. To be honest I have a small theory that there’s was plans for a third installment to the chased by dinosaurs spin off trilogy about creatures of the sky. My theory comes from the final arc of sea monsters showing a pteranodon fairly prominently. Most likely it would have followed a similar formula to sea monsters going back and fourth through prehistory to see how flight first evolved and how it changed and the different approaches evolution took with it. Possibly beginning in the carboniferous with meganura and ending much like sea monsters in the Cretaceous with pterosaurs and several primitive birds.

Or nimble plant-eaters scurry through a primeval forest. No more would flying reptiles fill the skies. Or oceans teem with colossal seagoing monsters. Gone were bizarre creatures bristling with spikes and clubs . . . horns and frills . . . and mountains of flesh so huge, they shook the ground beneath them.
