WALKS IN DORSET at HINTON MARTELL & CHALBURY (& THE HORTON TOWER) (4K)

In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a 4.5 mile circular walk from the village of Hinton Martell which is located about 4 miles North of Wimborne Minster. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I parked my car in the village and started off with a quick wander along the main street. There is an amazing fountain with an effigy of Cupid right in the centre of the village as well as some charming houses & cottages - many thatched and some dating from the 17th century.
After a visit to the church of St John the Evangelist, I left the village & headed North across fields to my next destination - the delightful village of Chalbury that sits at the top of a hill.
There is another church to explore - the church of All Saints - which is painted white inside as well as outside and boasts a wonderful triple decker pulpit.
I continued my journey Northwards to Chalbury Farm at which point I headed East - again along footpaths on the side of fields.
Eventually I came across the iconic Horton Tower - a folly built in the 18th century that dominates the local landscape.
My route then took me South through Holt Wood (I would suggest taking a detour along the road during the Winter as it can get very muddy in the wood!).
The final section of the walk took me West from Rooks Hill back to Hinton Martell.
Although the village has no pub, I would recommend a visit to the Horton Inn which s not too far way.

Thank you Melissa. We were certainly lucky with the weather that day - you could see for miles at the top of that ridge by the tower.

What a beautiful area and a perfect day for filming. That fountain must be quite unusual, placed where it is. I'm surprised some long vehicle hasn't clipped that lovely low wall. A couple of lovely churches too and a quite attractive tower/folly. The wealthy gentry certainly liked building places which had little or no purpose. I could see Logan had eyes on that hare.

My wife, being an avid crocheter appreciated seeing the kneelers! The box pews in the wee church at Chalbury are still common enough in Scotland where I live.

A random fountain, two churches - the second of which was quite spectacular, and a folly. You are spoiling us!! Mr Treves seems a bit grumpy and dismissive of some things - wonder what it took to impress him apart ftom the air at Charlbury!!

It is quite fun reading Treves - he certainly wasn't afraid to say what he felt! When he does come across something spectacular though, he does mention it.

Wow, that small first church is very ornate and beautiful. One of the finest I've seen. Lovely And that little whitewashed old church was amazing too in its simplicity, so special. It was wonderful to have a peek at these historical gems. Thank you.

Hi Dave , another lovely walk , thanks . As I’m laid up for a few weeks after a small op on toes, I’ve been catching up on your videos and was wondering if you have an actual list of walks you’ve done and what order? Just to see which ones I’ve missed. Thank you Alan

I hope that you recover from your operation quickly. All of the walks are listed on playlists (eg all the Dorset Walks are on the Dorset Walk Playlist) which can be looked at on the home page of the DCW KZbin channel. Cheers. Dave.

Did you have Logan on a lead or did he just not see the hare - or perhaps he's just too well behaved! We used to enjoy stopping at the Horton Inn.
@DaveFord
@DaveFord 3 ай бұрын
Logan was on a lead at the time (when the Hare short across in front of us) and he watched it shoot across the field. He is so well behaved that he would not have chased it even if he was off lead!

@mikewalker8655 I thought the same thing, I put away hunting years ago. It was a thing of my youth. It was always wood pigeons and corvids. With the exception of corvids, I always ate what I caught. It was either me or someone as the farmer needed them kept under control, not wiped out, just kept down. At least I knew I was humane, there were many cruel pest controlers who shot anything indiscriminately, and I knew as long as it was me, then it would be ethical. But I just couldn't do it anymore when I got older, I feel for them too much, let the younger guys do the job. I just didn't have it in me anymore, one day. Apparently that happens to a lot of hunters later in life, they just hit a wall and can't hurt anything anymore.
