This is another video in my series “ Walks in Dorset” accompanied by my Whippet (Logan). In this episode, I take a walk in and around Portland Bill - the Southernmost point in Dorset, located 16 miles of Dorchester.
After parking my car at the car park near the lighthouse, I start my 3.5 mile circular route from the Obelisk which is located on the tip of the Bill. I then head West past Pulpit Rock and the MOD Magnetic Range - keeping to the South West Coastal Path - before turning North past the National Coastwatch Lookout and the old “Higher” lighthouse (now a holiday let).
Shortly after admiring the views over to Chesil beach in the West, I head across the Bill to the Eastern side to start my Southerly walk through the old quarries with great views of the sea. I get to explore Cave Hole before passing the old “Lower” Lighthouse (now a bird observatory), the Red crane and the old tramway.
I end up at the Lobster Pot Cafe (one of the top 25 most charming seaside cafes in the UK ….. according to the Daily Telegraph in 2015) for sausage & chips.
The weather was perfect for my walk - a sunny, bright Spring day.

I enjoyed this Portland video Dave. Would like to see more of the island as I was born and still live here. There are so many points of interest and great views to be had. Well done.

Good evening Dave and Logan. I found this site fairly recently and I am so glad I did. I am now "Binge Watching" your series of walks around one of my favourite areas of England. I thought I was familiar with Dorset having stayed there on many occasions (I'm from East Yorkshire) but I realise now even after 30 years of visits I haven't even "scratched the surface". Your videos will now be used as the basis for future visits. Keep 'em coming ....

Logan seemed quite unimpressed with your shaggy dog story at the cave hole! Portland always seems quite a singular place when I visit but very interesting and beautiful scenery. Thank you for sharing!

Super video. I've walked both sides of the Bill so recognised much of what you showed. I've also seen the carving of the Roy Dog in Tout Quarry but have somehow not come across the grating you and Logan looked through where you told the story of the Roy Dog, so I found that all very interesting! what beautiful weather you had that day - the sea did indeed look wonderful.

The Cave Hole is very impressive to view through the grate - nature is an amazing thing at times.

Hi Dave, another hugely enjoyable video, thank you. I wonder, if the opportunity arises, whether you would be able to do a walk around the 'top' of the island? The views looking over Fortuneswell and across the causeway are spectacular and there’s plenty of history too. Just a thought! 🙂

I certainly hope to do the "other half" of the island on another visit Phil - there is so much to explore there.

Looked like a beautiful day Dave. Not many squirrels for Logan to watch, due to the lack of trees. I saw that old crane on your Facebook page, but I didn’t know what it was used for. When you met the other whippet, I think you used the word ‘lighter’ or ‘sighter ‘ or something similar. I probably misheard what you said, so maybe you can clarify for me. Logan is a very gentle eater. He never snatches food out of your hand and he took his time with that sausage.

I used the word "Sighthound" - basically hounds that, originally, were bred for hunting primarily by speed & sight rather than scent & endurance as endurance hounds do. The main sighthound breeds are Greyhounds, Whippets & Salukis but there are many others. Yes, it was a super day and the sun really brought out the blue in the sea.
