In this episode of my series “ Walks in Sussex” , I take a 3.5 mile circular walk starting & finishing in the pretty village of Bramber which is located just to the South East of Steyning & 3 miles North of Shoreham on the edge of the South Downs National Park. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at a free car park off the main street that goes through Bramber village and make my way Westwards to explore the remains of Bramber Castle. Once a Saxon fortification & built into a Motte & Bailey Norman Castle, it became derelict in the 16th century.
Next to the Castle remains is the delightful church of St Nicholas - which was open for viewing. I continued my journey with a wander Eastwards along the main village street, admiring the wonderful old buildings full of history.
Crossing the River Adur, I head on to the village of Upper Beeding and then on up to the top of Beeding Hill where I get to enjoy some magnificent views of the South Downs as well as the sea to the South.
My route then takes me Westwards, along the South Downs Way, over the River Adur again and on to the hamlet of Botolphs with it's pretty church - now run by the Churches Conservation Trust - which has one of just 6 Tapsel Gates in Sussex ( a type of gate that has a central pivot that allows it to be rotated through 90 degrees).
After a coffee & cake at the little cafe at the church, I head on back to Bramber along the banks of the River Adur.

Thanks Dave. Another great video and coincidentally very close to one of the two places I am staying (Shoreham) for a two week period on the South Downs, when visiting from Australia this July. Really appreciate all the information and views, etc.

Really enjoyed this one as it is an area I know quite well. However you always provide lots of extra snippets of information I didn't know even if it's a familiar area! Logan looked very smart in his coat early on!

I always chuckle when they refer to people in the past reusing Roman or medieval stone as "robbing" on Time Team.

I was hoping you might have travelled along the old horsesham to shoreham line. I was there recently (albeit by taking a wrong turn) and found a rather lovely hidden spot. I won't say exactly where it is but if you are back on the track, look out for the colourful gaffer tape. Love how you down talk the second coffee and cake. We all knew there was only one answer! Glad to see you both enjoy Sussex on a glorious day. Cheerio Dave and Logan. Come back soon

Great memories there! I was born in Lancing in 1940 (in the middle of an air-raid!), and had an aunt who lived in Upper Beeding. In the 1950s I travelled every day to Steyning Grammar School on the "Steyning Flyer" as we called the steam train, passing through Bramber of course. We often used to visit Bramber for the castle and the museum of oddities (long gone, I'm sure), where such items as a stuffed two-headed calf were on display. The whole area is full of memories for me, but now living in New Zealand and at the age of 82 I don't think I shall ever get a chance to see it all again except through your excellent video. Thank you, and I look forward to the next one.

Thanks Jim. My Grandmother used to live in Steyning so I got the opportunity of visiting that town a lot during my youth and I do recall walking down to Bramber to explore the castle once so it was great to be able to go back.

A very informative and interesting video Dave, thank you for sharing. After you show The Rising Sun pub at Beeding I am intrigued how you get on to the Monarch’s Way from there. You head up a chalk track, where is that? Looks like a lovely walk there. I have liked and subscribed 👌🥰
@DaveFord

Thanks Lynn and indeed welcome to the channel! From the roundabout at the Rising Sun pub, head east on the footpath along the A2037 Henfield Road until you get to the entrance of Bostal Road on your right (You will have passed by the Valerie Manor Nursing Home on your right & the entrance to Manor Road on your left before you get to Bostal Road). The Monarch's Way is signposted from the entrance to Bostal Road. Head down Bostal Road and it soon turns into a chalk track that takes up uphill to Beeding Hill. I hope that you get to enjoy the future videos in the series. Thank you for watching.

@@DaveFord Oh that's great Dave, thank you so much, I'm pretty sure I know where you mean. We will definitely do this walk. Logan is such a beautiful dog, I love the way he walks along (unlike mine, who does his own thing at greater speed 🙂). Will look forward to joining you on more of your walks 🥰

I've done tons of walks in this area (lived in Brighton for 6 years and now in Shoreham) and your research is amazing! Botolph's church is one of my favioute places in Sussex (and probably the world), I just find it so peaceful. If you ever fancy company on a walk, send me a message.

Thanks Lavinia. We really enjoyed our trip to Sussex that day. The views from the top of Beeding Hill were stunning & there was so much history to "explore" in both Bramber & Upper Beeding.

I always learn so much from your videos - you must do so much research before your visits. I'm embarrassed to admit that I haven't been to Bramber since going there on a school trip many years ago and it's only just down the road from me! Your video has inspired me to visit there again soon. Thank you as always. I really enjoyed it 😊

I did like those timber framed buildings in Bramber along with the views from up on the downs. I'm amazed that gatehouse still stands. It looks as if a strong wind could demolish the whole thing. Lovely walk Dave
