In this episode of my series “ Walks in Wiltshire”, I take a walk in & around the village of Tollard Royal which is located very close to the Wiltshire / Dorset border . Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at a free car park area by the pond at the bottom of the village and start my 5 mile circular walk with an exploration of Tollard Royal. After visiting the Church of St Peter Ad Vincula, I head up through the main street, past the old Methodist Chapel & the King John Inn.
My route takes me out into the countryside along The Hardy Way, uphill along a ridge to Win Green - the highest point in the Cranborne Chase. There is an alternative route along the valley bottom, on the Wessex Ridgeway, which may be more suitable as it avoids walking across fields of crops.
Win Gren - with it's clump of beech trees - is owned by the National Trust. I then join the Cranborne Droves Way for my homeward leg back to the village. My final destination is the King John Inn at Tollard Royal.
NB: The name of the church at Tollard Royal is the Church of VINCULA (not Vinicula as stated in the video!)

Hi Dave, We did the Tollard Royal walk last Saturday. The weather was beautiful and the views on the walk were stunning, especially from Win Green. On the Ox Drove our Springer Tess found a flooded rut deep enough to swim in which was very welcome on a hot day. We found our refreshments in the King John Inn on the conclusion of the walk - a lovely pub and highly recommended. Thanks again for the inspiration - keep up the good work. John, Sally and Tess 🐾

The pub garden was a lovely place to finish the walk - set up high on the side of a hill.

The drag up from Tollard Royal to Win Green is definitely worth all the puff and pant Dave to enjoy those spectacular views. Funnily enough, when you were at 6d Handley last week I thought about suggesting a walk around Win Green. Great minds eh?

Another lovely walk. The clump of beech trees is like a miniature version of Chanctonbury Ring in Sussex before the great storm of 1987 destroyed most of it (now being regenerated, I think).

@@DaveFord I'll look forward to that. As an 82-year-old exile in NZ, I have no chance of another visit "home" to my home county to re-explore such places, but watching videos such as yours is the next best thing.

Hello, what a lovely wander, beautiful scenery. Loved the way you bagged the trig, Logan looked majestic sat on the top. And why go through a gate when you can go round it? Clever boy Logan 🐕. Take care, Ellie.

I loved the beech clump at Win Green. Put me a bit in mind of Chanctonbury Ring on the South Downs. I also enjoyed the comedy moment when Logan out foxed you around the gate! Another lovely video with stunning scenery.

Great video as always Dave! When you went to Tollard Royal did you drive up 'Zig Zag Hill' ? When Madonna was at Ashcombe House she was a nightmare. She tried, and failed to get the Compton Abbas Airfield shut down because 'it annoyed her' She caused trouble here in Shaftesbury High Street too on a shopping trip. Compton Abbas Airfield is an interesting place. They have lot's of old bi-planes and Tiger Moths, and wing walking, and it's a great place to go on a Sunday afternoon, and sit out the back of the bar area with a cold pint watching the old planes. I can thoroughly recommend it! Cheers! 😊 🍺🍺

I often drive up / down Zig Zag hill but on this occasion, I visited Tollard Royal from the other side (via Sixpenny Handley etc). Interesting story about Madonna & the airfield - I hadn't heard about that one. I think that Guy Ritchie owns the airfield now and that it will continue as before.

@@DaveFord Zig Zag hill catches a few people out who have never been there before. Yes everyone around here was glad to see the back of her, prancing around in her English tweeds and cloth cap trying to look like an English Lady, which of course was utterly ridiculous! That's great if Guy owns the airfield. I read a long time ago that since she left Guy has turned the estate into one of the top shooting venues in the UK. Which is quite apt when you think that one of Guy's most famous movies was "Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrel's" and a more recent one was called "The Gentlemen" -- In one of his other movies called "Snatch" I knew the man who taught Brad Pitt how to speak 'Pikey' who lived at the end of Park Street in St.Albans, a few miles from my old home behind Elstree Studios. 😂
