Go walking with the elephants as they move across their wilderness together! Enjoy a view of bulls, Somopane, Sebakwe & Jabulani and see how little Khanyisa looks beside them! Learn more about elephant feet and watch the herd at the waterhole as they stop for a drink during their bush walk. This is a great video to try out your elephant identification skills on!

Khanysia is letting everyone know she stands with Bubi. Her intentional move to Bubi and getting that close to her is a sign to the rest that Bubi is her pal, mentor and she has aligned with her. Although khanysiais is small, she is a powerful friend.. I loved Limpopo going backwards down the hill, so funny 🤣. Sebakwe, Jabu, Somopane and Fishan are so large that the trees are actually miniatures beside them. The bulls walk with such dignity. I think Jabu is bigger in height than Somopane? They are amazing to watch. Thanks for the video.

Haha! Limpopo does a “Lundi” waterbombing! It was interesting to watch Khanyisa drinking. I had thought she had learned to drink quite well, but today I noticed she still has a lot more to learn. The bigger elephants put their trunks just under the surface and suction up water, then maintaining that suction they move their trunks to their mouths and force the water out. Khanyisa isn’t doing that I don’t believe. She lays the top of her trunk sideways on the top of the water then uses it like a cup, soaking up a small amount of water in the tip of her trunk then dumps that small amount into her mouth, all the while losing some valuable amount of water during this transfer as well as when in her mouth. This seriously limits her fluid intake! I had not realized this before. She is definitely still a toddler in need of other elephants to teach her all the necessary elephant skills she needs to grow up healthy and strong! Thank you to the Jabulani herd for being willing to take on the challenge of raising another baby elephant, even though their natural time is up! Thank you HERD for being willing to be an elephant mom for the first most important years of her life and to now continue on as she needs and as the other herd members may need. Thank you HERD for supplying the protected land and personnel to maintain the lifestyle of the Jabulani herd as well as the homestead and sophisticated technology used to protect them as well as the simple labor needed to just cut leafy branches and bana grass and chop all the treats like sweet potatoes etc for the herd. Thanks to HERD for maintaining veterinary care for these beautiful mammals, as intelligent as humans, and possibly with even more skill sets than us.

In the homestead at night they're housed in specific groups to avoid fighting & disharmony amongst certain (male) members. I recall a video I saw a few weeks ago where Adine commented that the herd are all on contraception so perhaps that also aids as a preventative(?). I have never mentioned this before, but one of the things I appreciate the most about this beautiful and loving improvised family is that the adult males get to stick around, unlike what happens in the wild, where they are expelled from the group as soon as they reach maturity. I especially love this too. They are such an integral part of this herd. The provide protection, discipline and friendship to the adult females and help them raising the youngsters. They are great role models to not just Mambo and Zindoga but all the youngsters. I don’t know if it’s because they are on an enclosed reserve or the fact that they receive contraception that makes them stay with this herd. There are obviously wild bulls on the reserve for sure so I’m kinda wondering myself but am very grateful they stay!

What a wonderful ,wonderful post. Adine, you said that elephants were the only animals that could lift all four feet off the ground at once. Please explain this as my mind can not get a visual. I have never "HERD" of. this before. I enjoyed this peaceful stoll this morning. Thanks for this great post.

it's just wonderful accompanying the humans and the herd on their daily quiet walks through the bush and learning much about the elephants at the same time.I love it, it calms me and makes me feel so good. I sometimes watch videos from the Elephant Nature Park in Chaing Mai Thailand, and I'm often struck by the similarities and differences between the 2 species. The Asian elephants for instance are much more vocal and possibly more excitable - with their squeaks and strange trumpet noises; different from what we hear from our HERD herd. Do you know why the sounds they make are different? (Secretly I prefer our wonderful herd here in SA, but don't tell anyone!) Indeed they are all beautiful creatures, some of the best on earth.

On a walk like this, how many care takers go with the herd? What is the distance to the water holes? Are the water holes fed by rains only or wells? Love the calmness of this video.

Has anyone read Lawrence Anthony’s “The Elephant Whisper”?
@DianaBamaRN
@DianaBamaRN Жыл бұрын
I wondered because there’s a part in it where Lawrence Anthony talks about a sort of “force field “ or waves of ESP” and other descriptions of times in which he would suddenly be aware of the elephants presence without having ever seen or heard them first. I wondered if the carers or Adine had ever experienced this sensation before.

Oh what a wonderful walk! I didn't see my handsome Fish today but what I did notice is that a couple of the elephants have a long body. I just wish I was younger and I would make the journey back home but it is a long hop from Newcastle to Dubai then Joburg then the Lowveld. I appreciate your videos more than you will ever know.
