All of these voicing videos are absolutely incredible. I have been working through Mark Levine's Jazz Piano Book and also watching a lot of your videos. I feel like these two resources have given me a really comprehensive understanding of where to take my practice. Now all I have to do is practice like a nutter! Thanks so much for taking the time to share your time and knowledge!

Hi Oliver. That's really great. Yeah Levine's book is a classic. Have a look at his other one also if you get a chance - The Jazz Theory Book. It's just pure music theory rather than tailored towards piano, but it's also really good. Thanks for the comment :) And yeah, the hard part is always finding time to practice...

You should teach on jazz academies and schools (if you already don`t) One of the best, if not the best online teaching.

This was an amazing lesson. I'm currently studying voicing with ''Jazz Keyboard Harmony'' by Phil Degreg, do you think it's a ressource that will get me to a point when i can harmonize melody. Thank for your honest and knowledgeable opinion.

Sorry, not familiar with that book. And can't find the contents page anywhere online. I cover how to harmonise melodies/reharmonisation here: www.thejazzpianosite.com/jazz-piano-lessons/jazz-reharmonization/turn-song-jazz-song/ And this is a list of some of the books I have enjoyed and thought were useful: www.thejazzpianosite.com/resources/ Hope that helps a bit!

Ive been digging into your series now the whole day, not through obviously maybe my question will be answered later but i start to ask myself, how do I know which voicing to use for other chords and melody notes? mind you, youonly covered 3 chords here, which incidentally are major, minor and dominant, so my question is: can i apply ANY minor chord to this table to find the right voicing for a melody note like in this table? if yes, how do I know which notes make up that particular voicing for that chord? you are a great instructor, pleasure watching your videos!!

Hey. So again, apologies for the late reply. I'm not sure I completely understand your question, but I'll have a go answering anyway. If I didn't answer your question properly, please just re-ask it and I'll try again. You can apply all the minor chords voicings to ANY minor chord (you just have to transpose it). So a chord voicings is just a particular way of playing the notes in a particular chord. The chord voicings I covered in this series are commonly used voicings in Jazz. You can create your own voicings of chords also (see below video link). You just have to make sure the voicing contains the 3rd and the 7th of the chord (as these are the most harmonically important). What you need to do is: take the main melody note (the longest note in a bar or the first note in a bar) and create a chord voicing with that melody note on top. For example, if we have a Bar where the first melody note is an A and the chord is a CMaj7. The A is a 6 or a 13 against the CMaj7 chord. So we can play a C6 or a CMaj13 or a CMaj13#11 chord. Lets pick the CMaj13#11 chord, as an example. Then you have to determine a voicing for the chord which has the A on top. You HAVE TO include the 3rd and 7th of the chord (the guide tones) and the 13th of the chord (the melody note). But you can omit any other note. So we could play: C F# B D E A (so we have omitted the 5th - G) Check out my video on chord voicing rules, if you haven't already. This may answer some of your questions: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3_Jl2OEj86LeZo Let me know if that makes sense/answers your question. If not, just clarify it for me and I will try again :)
