Basic and brief walkthrough of the setting process for moths and butterflies. This is the best and easiest way for me but find what works for you. My setting board is handmade but you can purchase premade ones. Don't forget to change to HD!
Happy Watching!

IVE NEVER THOUGHT TO PUT LINES ON PINNING BOARDS. Just getting in to pinning, and this is ingenious, I don't know why I haven't seen this before? A beautiful moth though.

It makes your life so much easier. You can’t use it as an exact every time as sometimes the wings aren’t a perfect match either side but it’s a good base to work off and saves so much time!! Thank you ☺️

@@DeadSetCo that makes sense! I guess it'll depend on the specimen. Thanks so much 💞

Well that's fascinating, and weirdly I found my way here not because "oh, animal crossing has them too!" but because one of the display pieces you can commission in game from an npc involves getting 3 atlas moths for him and he gives you a much larger than usual model of the insect, large enough in the case of the Atlas (and Queen Alexandra's) for little details to show up. I was puzzled when I noticed the little window diamonds were see-through on the model, but there's no way they just accidentally left it like that so I checked some thumbnails and found this one which clearly shows, yep, they're see-through!

Sorry it totally seems I missed some comments! That’s really cool, I didn’t know about that game but yes, they totally do that little see-through bits! It’s really cool

Those moths are for me were hard to pin they do take some time to rehydrate it took me like three days just waiting and I had to find a container large enough for it. ❤❤❤

Awesome video..I have a question though, how would you go about drying out a atlas moth that's just died obviously they will have all the guts or insides I'm only asking as I have some due to pop out of there pupae and I would love to preserve them. Awesome awesome video I'm a fan .

Asgardian Adventures The one in the video is a fresh one that’s died recently so just do as I do in the video :) when drying keep them warm and out of a humid area and you’ll have no issues

I’m new to pinning Lepidoptera and I have a possibly stupid question- when pinning a freshly dead specimen, have you ever had a moth’s nerves still fire/their reflexes still kick in soon after death? I was beginning the pinning process on a Luna Moth I raised and that I thought was dead, when I noticed that she still had a slight reflex if I touched her back, and so out of concern I let her sit for a bit.

Sorry KZbin hasn’t been telling me about comments! If they still have a reflex, they likely aren’t fully dead. I usually freeze any freshly dead specimens overnight just to make completely sure before I start working on them. Also kills off any bugs that may have gotten onto them etc :)

Luke Lord Hey! Thank you so much. I’ve spent the last few years getting contacts with breeders around the world, I also raise my own insects. When it comes to starting out, I’d recommend having a look online, places like eBay have butterflies and moths for sale to set yourself, just be careful as some are from wild capture and kill, but they will generally say if they are ethical or not. You can also buy cocoons, enjoy them for a week or so and then when they die, set yourself, even if they are damaged. It’s all good practice! It’s taken me a long time to get where I am, I was terrible at first. Also check out Watkins and Doncaster for supplies!

@@DeadSetCo Ive loved seeing your pieces on facebook but this video was by far the best I hope you do more! I might have to have a look into that, would you ever think of doing like a tutorial series of the steps of taxidermy from stsrt to finish on piece's? Thank you again for your content and your reply!

How big is your board? I’m curious. What size would you recommend for a beginner or someone who wants to improve and get bigger butterflies?
@DeadSetCo
@DeadSetCo 3 жыл бұрын
I have about 8 or 9 different boards and mine are handmade. The standard ones you can buy from entomology shops are usually all a similar length and then you get different widths and thinner and thicker channels for different body types (moths need thicker channels for their big bodies, butterflies thinner). I’d recommend having a mixture as you’ll never get a “one size fits all” board. The one in the video is my biggest and likely around 40-45cm wide

Does the selotape looking stuff not pull of the moths scales ?

Feral Player official! No because it’s tracing paper and the pins hold it down :) if you rub on it or push hard it can do but the paper just placed on top won’t
