Great video Dustin! This was something I was curious about. Excited for the dual Wan setup video!

Thanks! I'm not sure how well known this particular product is but I do know that dual WAN configuration is certainly a topic of interest. It is one thing I am interested for my own network and not just for learning purposes, haha.

Hi Dustin! Thank for the vid, was actually looking into the LTE backup. Curious, would you know if Protectli is planning to come out with a 5G version?

You’re welcome! I’m not sure if they are. I’m guessing it generates a smaller amount of sales than their mini-PCs so it could be lower priority. Where I live, I wouldn’t likely be able to take advantage of a 5G network. I barely get 4G LTE, haha. At least my land line connection is decent and I should be getting symmetric fiber in the “near” future.

Thanks. Nice review. T-Mobile has the same kind of plan, they provide their own modem/router. Unfortunately their plan is a cgnat as well, and not having a dedicated ip address is a deal breaker for my use case. Haven't found a (wireless) plan that would provide direct ip addresses (wanna use it as a backup for my land connection)

They have some static IP address plans but I didn’t buy one of them because I wanted to try the carrier switching plan to get the best coverage where I live. So I’m not sure if you are behind CGNAT I’m those plans. I’m assuming not. The static IP plans cost more. Also it would get expensive quickly if you used a lot of data. Protectli used to have large data volume plans that also included static IPs but I don’t see them on their site anymore as an option.

great video! i'm interested know learn how to setup the dual wan backup. not sure if that protectli is usable in my country ( malaysia ), with differnet bands etc. i know most of 4g plans are under cgnat, and maybe u can make a video setting up how to bypass it. i've mostly read that they use vps and wireguard to bypass it, but just reading it giving me headaches. haha

Yeah unfortunately it is for US frequencies but the same concept would apply for any cellular hotspot/modem that offers an Ethernet connection. It is likely most cellular plans are going to be using CGNAT. It may be possible for some wireless ISP providers to not use CGNAT but I haven’t researched that much especially for other countries where I do not live. Unfortunately again, getting around the limitations of CGNAT can be a pain but you can use Cloudflare tunnels or I’ve seen others host a WireGuard server on a VPS in the cloud so they can connect to that. You basically need an external proxy where you can connect and everything communicates over that proxy since you cannot directly connect remotely to your home network with CGNAT. I haven’t tried doing that but it would be an interesting experiment. I do plan to do a dual WAN guide first. I have a lot on my list I want to do.
