I've said this before, but these old Grand Hotels are just too big with too many rooms. Back in the day when labour was a lot cheaper, they would probably have had hundreds of staff looking after the building and guests. They just can't do that now. I also dread to think what the cost would be to completely renovate such a large hotel, it is probably not even economically viable! I don't fully understand why Britannia even buy them, or what their long term intention is! Great review though, and yes, Llandudno is a truly lovely place😀
@infrasleep2 жыл бұрын
Maybe the land can be used to build on or the hotel converted into luxury flats after Britannia have proved the Hotels are beyond repair/unviable. I'm more and more wondering what the story is behind these Britannia hotels. The impression I get for each of them is that _someone_ along the chain of responsibility cares about getting it back into shape, but they're not getting the (financial?) support they need for structural works, so they can't do much more than patching things up here and there. Perhaps it would be interesting to do a "the story behind" sort of video at some point, and dive into where the problem lies?
@RushfanUK2 жыл бұрын
Nobody cares, the company is run by one man only, they have huge staffing and management turnover, carry out surface renovations but never really deal with issues such as roofs and structure which is why so often you see damp everywhere, all that matters is making a profit any way possible. Things like the linen trolleys and equipment being left out is because when they take over a hotel they will quite often turn storage rooms and linen rooms into guest bedrooms to squeeze as much out of a building as possible, as an environment to work in it very quickly sucks the life out of you as you are constantly battling the lack of staff and guest dissatisfaction.

This used to be a hotel owned by Billy Butlin. Yes, grand in its day, but that was a good few years ago. Originally, it would have had next to no ensuite rooms, which is something everyone expects nowadays, even in the cheapest rooms. Hence the additional pipework. The hotel must been adapted many times since it opened. Good honest assessment of the facilities. You brought all the right things to light. Those windows were disgusting. The Grand has been revamped several times over the decades - it's a great location in a beautiful town - but keeping on top of such a large sea-edge hotel seems to be beyond the means of the current owners. I sympathise with them a bit, but the costs of an effective programme of building management would surely be offset by the higher-than-average room rates this hotel could command.

I was in Llandudno for a day trip with my sister and she showed me this hotel which she'd stayed in the past. We went onto one of the balconies where Tim went. It was extremely hot that day and the sea view was magnificent. When I went to the bar I noticed how old everything was and even if new it would still look awful as the hotel is very tired looking. It needs a complete overhaul. But bet they can't afford it! We went down to the ground floor overlooking the sea and it was quite shabby with a cheap and nasty looking cafe! I wouldn't stay there if they paid me! We then went to view another hotel further down from The Grand looking onto the promenade. The St George's hotel a very upmarket hotel completely immaculate. So different and more my style any day! We peaked into the dining room and they had the most wonderful setting with damask covered chairs and tables. That is how a real hotel should look! They also had their coffee afternoon tea section which to our disappointment was fully booked! Superb decor and if you check out their rooms online you'll be stunned by the quality! So if I stay over in this resort I'll be staying here for my creature comforts. and it is literally 1/2 a mile from the Grand Hotel.

Not sure if you still read the comments for older videos, but I stayed here a couple of years ago. We'd originally planned to be at Prestatyn Pontins. Six minutes in the room and we left (just going to watch that video next), but we were stuck in the middle of nowhere, no idea where to go. So I googled The Grand Hotel, Llandudno, because I used to holiday in North Wales, knew the area well, but had never stayed there. There were two adults, two childrens, so we ended managed to get a room with double and a single, and one of the turret rooms. It was a bit neglected, but apart from paint flaking off and damp, the rest was beautiful. To me, it's a snapshot of a byegone era. Very Twilight Zone, but has character. We all enjoyed it, and would stay again. The area is amazing. Thanks for the trip around all the nooks and crannies of the hotel, never realised there was a games room/restaurant or bar area. Stunning building and a shame to see it a bit neglected, but like you said looks like they are trying to improve it. You’ve made me want to go to Llandudno, looks lovely.

While it is sad to see how these old historic building are falling into disrepair and Brittanias mismanagement is worsening their decline, I think it was honestly inevitable for many of these buildings with or without Brittania. Seaside location and old huge buildings are always going to end in destruction unless massive amounts of cash are injected to their upkeep, which might not be a sound investment for most businesses. I certainly think there should be an effort to maintain these buildings (with or without Brittania) but unfortunately the fiscal reality of that is grim these days

Yes. Perhaps. I do sympathise with Britannia and they do not hide that they are the budget end. It's hard to know whether a more expensive premium product would be worthwhile, or whether these grand places have had there day.

Older hotels do tend to have a lot of old pipes. It looks like the whole place needs ventilation, some cleaning & a coat of paint. Maybe spraying with silicone on the outside to help exclude damp.

You should review the cliffs hotel Blackpool. It's a 2-star hotel, however, the rooms are a big let-down. The bathrooms are really old, small and dirty and the rooms are of poor quality. I have stayed at the Cliffs several times over the years but, never again. It would make an interesting review for you.

Love Llandudno Tim, spent many family holidays growing up here and working here through summer in my early teen years. Per to me being born my grandparents also holidy'd here and brought my father and uncle as children in the 50s+. Wanting to take a visit here soon to present Mrs Codmen with a portfolio of photos of her family punch and judy stand from his child hood to the mid 2000s. Llandudno has so much to do from the punch and judy, pier, two beaches, a fanilcular tramway, tabbogan run, alice in wonderland trail and museum, the great orm, copper mines, boat tours, the lighthouse museum, dolphin s. Llandudno has got it. I used to work in a small hotel called the Rochdale not far from the lido on the other side of the prominade 😃 also you have brilliant places like conway close buy to visit too

I last stayed in that place in 1984, can even remember the room number 321. It was before Britannia took it over, it was owned by trust house forte. It seems from your video, it's as bad now as it was then. Nothing seems to have changed, it remains dated, grotty and neglected. If the right owners had that hotel, it could be turned into a stunning place, taking advantage of its stunning location

This is 5 🌟 compared to good ol' Blackpool! As for creaky floors, try the Quality Friendly Hotel in Loughborough... 🤦♂️.. it's ridiculous! Gotta say I'm loving these videos though 😂.. and I'll always love Wales! ♥ 😁

Just came back from llandudno yesterday. Love the place and a great base to see North Wales. we popped into the grand to see if anything had changed and sad to say its more shabby than when you made this video. Couldn't get in any of the bedrooms but going by the rest of the place I can't see they would have invested in the rooms. By the way hats off walking on that outside balcony. Have you seen the rusted beams holding that thing up. Shame on Britannia. Great video anyway.

Hi Tim, You really ARE a very brave young man - I can honestly say that even a substantial amount of money would NOT bribe me into staying in that total dump. Yet again, Britannia score top marks for dirty, damp, depressing, old and utterly unbearable. I know for a fact that the Hospitality trade organisations in the U K regard that company as a total embarrassment and stain on their industry. Damp at THAT level is a health hazard and the environmental health inspectorate at the local council need to view this video. I advise as many subscribers as possible send it through to them. I hope you didn't pick up anything nasty in there - 😵

Yup, I can tell already it's going to be a case of a massive hotel, built in a time when holiday habits were quite different, now struggling to keep going considering its size etc, in this age of foreign holidays etc.
@monk3yboy692 жыл бұрын
At least an up to date modern Travelodge will offer all modern amenities. The costs to run these old buildings are astronomical. And a chain is better able to weather the financial storms. Plus, when you book a budget chain you really do know what you are getting. ( and in most cases are satisfied).
@Fluffykeith2 жыл бұрын
@@Greylobster I guess it’s a cost benefit analysis based on how much heritage the building has. Right now it looks like it’s just being slowly run down and Britannia clearly can’t afford the cash injection it needs to prevent that.
@andyb77882 жыл бұрын
@@Fluffykeith Whilst i am sure it would cost a fortune to renovate those hotels, when the problems are things like basic cleaning, it feels like they just don't care. If money was the issue, instead of buying more and more, creating a huge portfilio of disgustion hotels, why not get the ones you have up to scratch? They are clearly not bothered about their reputation. I can think of at least 4 of them within 6 miles of where I live, 2 of which Tim has been to, and they are all the same. One of them, The Metropole received a damning hygeine inspection and then closed to house asylum seekers. Wonder what they make of it! The Grand Hotel (Blackpool) offered its rooms as pop up Covid wards. Just cant help thinking they were hopIng NHSwould clean the place up for them!

Hi Tim, it was a Butlins years ago. We stayed on a coach trip our hotel room was a twin and overlooked the Orme I agree the rooms are not the best but downstairs is much nicer. Shame you didn’t get to eat there as dinners and breakfast were lovely. It is such a shame but many of the old hotels are so tired and I guess they can’t afford to keep up the maintenance. We were out every day on coach trips so it wasn’t to bad for us as we didn’t stay there only to sleep and eat. It’s was nice to see the old place again it was about 10 years since we went and it’s not improved 😢

My family and I were literally just in Llandudno and remarked on this hotel and how utterly shabby it looked from the outside - I even said I wonder if your channel would have a video of it, and here it is! I can't honestly believe how incredibly grotty and unattractive it all is on the inside, it certainly matches the terrible impression it gives from the outside. Thanks for making these videos!

Disagree. You have to look beyond what you think. The Hotel was once a stunning build. Its a shame that its been neglected and hopefully although its going to take a few years to get it back to where it once was.

Your videos are most informative and enjoyable. That hotel seemed to be very large but well kept. Maybe a larger, white shirt would have helped with the food service. Thank you!

The place clearly started out as a borderline luxury hotel but they've obviously let it fall apart. It's a shame. Fix it up and clean it up and you can use it as an old school theme based hotel where you play into its age.

I was told recently it is common practice for girls to boil their knickers in the kettle. Hence we purchased a very cheap kettle and we take that and our own water with us to hotels. I'm in Australia so obviously happens everywhere. How disgusting are some people?
