I visit Tramtown in Blackpool at Rigby Road Transport's depot to show you all the heritage trams! including the famous illuminated trams such as the ABC Train Tram, The Rocket, HMS Blackpool and so much more! Bob & John are my personal tour guides! Tramtown has future plans to create a state-of-the-art visitor center and protect the precious vintage trams. A whole new roof is needed before this can happen so they need your help.
Book HERE 👉 blackpoolheritage.com/guided-depot-tours/ and support this amazing project!

Tram Town is a fantastic place to visit. Paul & his colleagues are super friendly. My wife & I were walking past the depot during the afternoon & the guys there saw I was like a kid in a sweet shop !! As a one off they invited us in for a guided tour as we were not staying in Blackpool for long & was unable to book the next scheduled one. If you are in Blackpool & want to indulge yourself in history, go & visit. Sadly walking back to the hotel along the prom, some yobbos thought it funny throwing glass bottles at us, which otherwise spoilt a perfect day !!

According to 1900s reasoning, open trams actually were a Health&Safety feature - people thought the cold and fresh air would keep the drivers alert! Vienna, where I live and drive vintage trams, only started enclosing platforms after a very harsh winter in the 1930s (extended temperaturs in the -20s I think). New cars were built with enclosed platforms from around 1910 onwards but did run with the doors open until the last pre-war cars were withdrawn from service in 1978. The first cars with remote-controlled doors were introduced in 1951. This workshop is nothng short of amazing, including the staff! Apparently there's only a handful of workshops left in Europe certified to replace tram tyres on solid wheels like this and they charge a fortune. Modern trams have rubber buffers between the wheels and tyres and the tyres are just pressed on cold, which is a lot less faff than the old way. From what I've heard it costs 50 grand to have four heat-fitted tyres replaced!

Great video Tim. The modern trams may be more comfortable, but they just don't have the character of the vintage ones, always loved travelling on them, it was great to see them again.

Amen to that, I take riding the old trams over the copy and paste trains. After all they had character, class and unique style that anyone can tell them apart where there from like Glasgow tram, a Liverpool tram or London tram. the things that the new ones don't have.

My funny memory of those trams in the 1970s was the times when the pantograph (the long rod that tracks the electric overhead cable) came off the cable and the driver or conductor got off to use a long bamboo pole with a hook on the end. He would reconnect the rod to the power supply and set off again. As I recall, this took about 2 minutes. The ride on those trams was quite rough, so I assume that the tracks were in poor shape in the past. You would need to hang on because a sudden bump could knock you off your seat or off your feet. As a boy, that was good fun!

Trolley poles are somewhat notorious for coming off the wire and they require quite complicated supports for the actual wire because the pickup goes partly around the wire. Other types of pickup, like pantographs, only touch the bottom of the wire, which is why many cities in Europe changed very early. Vienna phased out trolley poles before WWI and replaced them with Siemens lyra-style pickups.

13:30 - 15:34 This took me flying back to around 1970. Those seats (almost as hard as the planks underneath), their 'art nouveux' covers, the light-fittings, and the stairs (as if designed to break an ankle if you mistrod while the tram was in motion). 😃 And he's completely right about the front bench being the exciting place to sit! Absolutely wonderful! Thanks so much for this vid!

I lived in San Francisco for a couple of years and remember one Sunday afternoon walking down Market street and seeing a Blackpool open deck tram with The Pleasure Beach as its destination running past me. It tool me back 40 years when I use to go to Blackpool for my holidays with the family as a child. I'll see if I can find a picture I took with my camera ( film in thise days not digital) and add it here.

Tim you don't half push out some content, which is great for someone like me who does not own or watch TV, who loves nothing more than exploring pretty little English towns and villages! I will tell you a secret now Tim, but keep this between us, but, my favourite English village is Dunster in Somerset! Visited many times now, last time was in 2017 for a few days staying in the village itself in a lovely B&B, right by the old yarn market building, with views of the castle and the sea over at Blue Anchor Bay, the yarn market itself is the perfect place of an evening for some people watching while drinking a nice Black Russian, though the village life is obviously so much quieter than in a town, the village is asleep by 10pm, so for a night owl like me, I found it odd. But what a stunning place Tim, honestly, it is quentissentially English, such a pretty place with a very relaxed vibe. Just, don't tell anyone or they will all head there 😀

23:52 my uncle helped restore Bolton 66 he was a Wood working specialist hired by the restoration group, at the time the tram was just a hen coop. He rebuilt the upperdeck and made some new seating. There is a plaque on the inside as a dedication. He helped restore other trams as well after that, he must have been given a good review.

those old trams were regular transport for me when I grew up, I loved those double deckers they seemed old in the 70's. I remember the conductor walking down the tram flipping the seats ready for the return journey. As kids we did it because you could and the conductor would be annoyed having to go round put them back. In winter you might have been the only person on a tram, will visit the tram sheds this year when not staying at the Norbreck.

Tramnik 1 is the tram I most associate with Blackpool. I remember as a kid always keeping an eye out for it when we went to see the illuminations. That was in the early '90s.

Wonderfull video. I stayed in Cleveleys for a bit in the winter of 84/85. Loved the trams and often caught one down to visit Tower Models in Blackpool. (Are they still there) After four months in Europe I came back to find double decker and illuminated trams along with 100,000 tourists. None of which were there in winter. The difference between winter Blackpool and summer Blackpool is crazy.

Id love to work there, at 36 ive followed electric motor development over the years and you can see it in the generations of trams, theres an original battery tram from that area that was cutting edge in the late 1800's

Thank you so much Tim, a very informative, enjoyable and for many of us a quite evocative trip down memory lane, the sights, sounds and smells of the trams still linger in our most treasured memories. The restoration work being carried out by the tram teams is amazing, and looks even better in a 4k rewatch. Have you thought about visiting canalrivertrust.org.uk/places-to-visit/national-waterways-museum at Elsmere port someday

Didn't spitting have something to do with the transmission of tuberculosis? I can certainly remember it on buses as a child - although, it was quite often 'altered' so that it referred to a quite different bodily function!! This is a brilliant attraction - worth a trip to Blackpool at some point, I'm sure! Thanks for the preview - I'd not have known about it otherwise!

Funnily enough, spitting IS a problem on the railways to the extent we have to carry a spit kit around. Lovely tour though. Only tram I've actually been on was at Crich. Still evidence of the tramway from around Bournemouth and some of the old stuff is still at Christchurch, as far as I know.

@@WalkWithMeTim Thank you I have booked one on the Saturday on Easter weekend.I think the 710 tram which was use in coronation Street which killed Alan Bradley is stored at Fleetwood unless it has been moved.I saw a video of it being moved 8 years ago on KZbin.kzbin.info/www/bejne/jp21pmCPpa-sgas
