In Barcelona (and throughout Catalonia) there is a coastal law that prohibits building less than X metres from the coast. The W hotel was built directly on the sea! In violation of this law and everything that surrounds it, the W hotel and the area around it has become an area for the nouveau riche who want to take a photo of themselves on Instagram so they can say ‘I was there’. Not to mention that it is built in the Barceloneta neighbourhood, a very run-down neighbourhood where at night you can have your watch or phone stolen and get stabbed for free.

I love this part of Barcelona, we stayed at a hotel, just down from the W and it was more towards the marina. Remember, a super yacht with a helicopter on, it had just pulled in. It was quite spectacular to watch those guys bring that in. There’s also a little park down where we were that had a festival as an American. It was really interesting to watch all this. When going to a beach or tropical location there is ALWAYS a funny smell at seaside resorts regardless of pricing. I reccomend it now and until early Autumn, as we all know Wales can be rainy. And if you go, do a bit of prior reading on how important Barry Docks were at their peak. We also have the 2nd highest tidal pattern in the world so seeing the low tide at Whitmore Bar, Jackson Bay, the Old Harbour or the Knap pebble beaches are something quite beautiful. We also have a tiny Roman Ruin near the Knap. 🏴
