funny enough, as someone who’s currently a senior in college, all the money i would have spent on getting all this would have gone to waste as I haven’t had an in person interview or required in office internship since 2019. great video though and second on the Charles Tyrwhitt

Fair enough! Quarantine definitely changed things up - especially the need for pants and shoes...? You bring up a great point - I definitely recommend students purchase things on an "as needed" basis. Definitely don't go out and buy stuff in upfront, folks!

Thanks for the video! For dress shirts, what fit do you recommend?
@PeterHoilKang3 жыл бұрын
Great question! I've had the most luck with "Slim Fits" that most modern professional retailers have. Classic generally gets too baggy and bunchy on the sides and back. SOMETIMES (but rarely) I'll go with the "extra slim" type option, but only after I've tried them on. The shirt should hang comfortably off your body but still feel like a good fit - it shouldn't cling to you or hug you tight. Charles Tyrwhitt specifically has a slim, extra slim, and super slim fit. I personally go with slim. Best bet is to go into the store, try it on, and get what you think is the cleanest looking and most comfortable! For context, I'm 5' 10", ~170lbs, and wear a medium t-shirt. Semi-fit but not too muscular.

Great video! What coat or jacket do you recommend for winter in NYC? I’ll be starting this Jan and don’t know if I should be wearing an overcoat/top coat or can get away with wearing a Canada Goose type jacket?
@PeterHoilKang3 жыл бұрын
Hey Lucas - Congrats on your new gig! I'm guessing you're asking from a professionalism POV vs. a weather POV? (It can get very cold in NYC obviously.) I wouldn't worry too much about specifics, as long as it passes your judgement. NYC people understand that it's a tundra out there, and that function over form is more important for a coat. I've seen plenty of Geese around midtown, but also not necessary. Any monotone/muted/black/navy type of peacoat, parka, or down jacket should do. Best of luck and stay warm!

Dumb question: what are the rules around three piece suits?
@PeterHoilKang Жыл бұрын
Oh I thought I responded to this! Think I forgot to click reply. As a general rule of thumb, a more junior person should aim to be slightly the most professional / muted dressed. A three piece suit could fit into the same category as pocket squares, embroidered button downs, French cuffs, pocket squares, and Rolex watches - overly gaudy or flashy. It may some seem out of place or odd in many offices too (too wedding-y?). Depending on the three piece suit, you could just remove the vest if it feels off. A lot of 3 piece suits have a different look to start with though. In most offices, people will likely just tease you or rag on you a bit and not much else. Small chance someone with an ego actually dings you in their head or calls you out negatively. Hope this helps!

Hey peter, I saw many memes about how brown shoes could cost you a job lol I wonder if brown/tan shoes are acceptable on wall street, and are monk straps ok as well?
@PeterHoilKang Жыл бұрын
Wowzers sorry about the late late reply. Guessing you already realize this but --- Brown shoes are generally fine! Especially darker (coffee mocha colored) ones. Monk straps I also see all the time on Wall Street - I'd say they're on the "flashier" / "edgier" side of acceptable. In line with deal sleds and an Hermes tie. Once you're a year or two in / if you're associate or above, monk straps are generally fine. As an intern or 1st year just joining - you might get some flack but also not a huge deal. Just gotta read the room a bit! Hope you're doing well in whatever office you're in!

Hey not sure if you will see this as I’m seeing this video very late but what vest do you have on at the end?
@PeterHoilKang Жыл бұрын
Ooh - sorry about super late reply. It's a Barbour Gilet Vest! Seems like it's not listed on their site right now for some reason - maybe it'll come back when it's warmer. www.barbour.com/mens/quilted-jackets Here's an affiliate link to Amazon (that I'm eligible for commission for). Doesn't seem like there's good sizing though. amzn.to/48huNia Good luck! It's a great vest - bit pricey but would recommend!

Is this similar to what women where on Wall Street?
@PeterHoilKang3 жыл бұрын
I've observed a lot, but I unfortunately can't confidently speak to best practices / tips on women's professional wear. Generally speaking, there's a lot more variety in every aspect: articles of clothing, acceptable styles and colors, different ways you can "mess up", more "rules". Plus you also gotta worry about "male gaze" type stuff.
