🦋 Subtle yet fascinating. A bird that moves across cliffs with the grace of a butterfly.
Meet the Wallcreeper (Tichodroma muraria) - a unique species that visits Czech region Pálava every winter.
This tiny acrobat with striking red wings is one of the rare winter visitors. While its natural habitat includes the Alps, Carpathians, and even the Himalayas, it descends to lower elevations in the cold months in search of food hidden in rock crevices. Its surgically precise beak allows it to extract insects from the narrowest cracks.
📍 What will you see in this video?
✔ How the Wallcreeper survives winter in Pálava
✔ How it hunts spiders, flies, and small insects
✔ How it moves so effortlessly across rocky surfaces
🎥 Filming this master of the cliffs was no easy task. Constant motion, unpredictable jumps, and sudden movements - sometimes you wait just 5 minutes, other times 15 hours. But spotting this tiny traveler between mountains and lowlands is an unforgettable experience.
The entire video capturing the Wallcreeper was filmed in slow motion - truly a challenging shoot.
During the filming, besides the dozens of people who came to witness this beauty, I was accompanied by my friend Josef Cink and Petr Šimon, whom I met on location. And as they say, time flies when you're having fun - so the long hours of waiting for those few precious seconds when the Wallcreeper flew within at least 15 meters went by as swiftly as the wind over beautiful Pálava.
🎥 Some details about this video 🎥
▶ 500 km of driving
▶ 15 hours of waiting in freezing yet sunny weather
▶ I filmed around 15 minutes of Wallcreeper footage on a Panasonic Lumix GH7 with a Panasonic 100-400mm lens, which I then edited down to the final version you see in this video. Most of the shots were much longer, but I had to trim everything down - I didn’t want the viewers to fall asleep! 😅
▶ The closest shot was from about 10 meters, while the farthest was around 20 meters.
▶ Post-production: Editing, color grading, writing and recording narration, creating subtitles, and preparing the video description - in total, it took me about 12 hours of work on the computer.
🙏 Thanks for watching!
