This was originally a W.T. Grant, looks like Kmart didn't change the building much since they bought it. So cool and vintage

Wow! Never knew about Grant. I was thinking maybe a Rickel or Pathmark. Very unique and plain exterior.

Some Grants Kmarts did looked nice (decent later over the years, cause of age, obviously). They sort of had a department store feel to them, unlike other vintage Kmarts.

It was Grant's in the 1970s before it was KMart. Grant's had a little lunch counter inside that ran along the front of the store to the right of the entrance. The lunch counter was no longer there after Kmart took over. I don't remember the garden center being in use anymore when I worked there in the mid to late 80s. The restaurant on the corner was called Hunan Delight. If you continued around the corner of the restaurant and kept going, you'd see another door that was an emergency exit for Kmart.

As several others commented, this was indeed a WT Grant (aka: Grant City) before KMart moved in. I grew up right behind this shopping center. Before Stop & Shop moved in & expanded, the building was originally a cinema. The Chinese restaurant next to KMart was a Szechuan restaurant for at least 35-40 years. The Burger King closed within the last year or two and that was there since the late 70’s/early 80’s. Thanks for making this video. Brought back a lot of memories.

Based on the exterior, it was a W.T. Grant store prior to being a Kmart. When W.T. Grant went out of business back in 1976, Kmart opened numerous locations where the former Grant's stores were. My Dad worked at W.T. Grant's around the late 1960's-early 1970's and that location would become a Kmart too.

That was a cool one! From what I remember for any of the few K-Mart locations I've been to here in the midwest in my home state of Wisconsin and now Minnesota, I don't recall any of them having those globe lights outside like this one did. Also, speaking of Wisconsin, when I saw the name Somerset, it immediately made me think of a town by the same name just over the MN/WI state line on the Wisconsin side, just about a half hour from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Back in 1976-77 we watched a shopping center here in Palm Bay, Florida being built. It would house a K-Mart and a Publix grocery store. The K-Mart closed probably 10 years or more ago and sat empty for several years then UHaul bought it and completely refurbished it into a beautiful rental and storage place. You'd never know it was ever a K-Mart. UHaul has a plaque on the wall outside saying something about them refurbishing the old K-Mart instead of building a new building of their own.
