Pretty good. Robinhood's customers do not own the shares once they have been lent, however: "• Absolute title over both lent and collateral securities passes between parties, meaning that these securities can be sold outright or “on lent” • Once securities have been passed, the new owner of them has certain rights. For example they have the right to sell or lend them to another buyer and vote in the Annual General Meeting if they are the holder at the record date • The lender of equities no longer owns them and has no entitlement to vote. But they are still exposed to price movements on them since the economic exposure to owning those securities is not passed. Typically lenders reserve the right to recall equivalent securities from the borrower and must exercise this option if they wish to vote" Also, the "beneficial owner" does not receive any dividends but rather payment-in-lieu of dividends. Money is fungible but not if you are the IRS. Short selling is selling and so is cleared through the DTCC. Lending/borrowing is done between stock custodians who are also securities lending agents. Historically the custodian would offer to lend the securities in exchange for waiving custody fees. Because the shares can be on lent without limit the short position can exceed 100%. Hedge funds used to be able cap upward price movements by borrowing stock and repeatedly hitting the bid. Because the lender did not have the stock that was lent there would be a delivery failure. The SEC has cracked down on delivery failures. "Delivery failure" does not mean that the stock was never delivered just that it was not delivered by settlement date.
@richardhaas393 жыл бұрын
Also there are two issues around collateral here. The DTCC wanted collateral from Robinhood but there is also a contract between the hedge fund/borrower and the custodian/lender. I have trouble believing Robinhood is its own custodian btw. The contract language between borrower and lender is: "If Lender[Robinhood] is a Customer, Borrower [Melvin]shall daily mark to market any Loan hereunder and in the event that at the Close of Trading on any Business Day the Market Value of the Collateral for any Loan to Borrower shall be less than 100% of the Market Value of all the outstanding Loaned Securities subject to such Loan, Borrower shall transfer additional Collateral no later than the Close of Business on the next Business Day so that the Market Value of such additional Collateral, when added to the Market Value of the other Collateral for such Loan, shall equal 100% of the Market Value of the Loaned Securities. " For volatile securities collateral exceeds market value by 5% but volatile securities are not this volatile so there was concern that the stock would appreciate faster than the hedge fund could transfer collateral.

1:50 3:00 poor people also cannot pay up when they are allowed to borrow large margins and cannot pay up but they do not default because the brokerage companies have lawyers and can go after these poor people and they are forced to pay up.

Why did Robinhood's capital requirement went up? They sold GME which they didn't own?
@paullyo22443 жыл бұрын
This is frustrating to everyone who bought into GME believing it would go up 10x from 300
@amathine4403 жыл бұрын
it actually would've. it would've reached above 1k easily. maybe even more before the halt

You say it as if the belief was wrong. It wasn't. It should've went at least that high, maybe higher. Nobody thought that businesses handling their money would turn around and screw them over, causing some extremely shady, even questionable legality moves that saved the billionaires! And f'ed their own average joe clients. Smh. I still can't understand how it's legal what they did! Im assuming its more of a "the law doesn't exist" than it actually being that what they did was right and completely legal. I think 99% of us can agree that shutting it down was wrong, it was completely manipulative, and I see it as fraud! A free market actually wasn't free for several days. Smh. So i believe there needs to be new laws signed in. The current ones need to be updated. And apps like Robinhood, webull, etc. Need heavy regulations to protect us non-billionaires.

Banks already lend out “your” cash, why wouldn’t Robinhood lend out “your” shares
@michelle-jn7ul3 жыл бұрын
Kind of but not really, banks need to have in reserve 10% of the amount they lend out. Every loan is really just drawn up in the digital monetary system and you pay it back + some. I guess that "lend out your money" applied before digital banking. Anyway we know banks supposedly lend out money but we also get paid and interest rate for them to do so. Robinhood was pocketing the interest and not saying anything about it.

I hope, that the sec take the right decision and I am very sad not to see that crazy story :( I was first in around 20usd so if they hold the line I got a pretty decent gain at 1000usd +

he mentions how twice a month short positions are released to public.. where is this information on short positions found? thank you
@kak39423 жыл бұрын
Shorting seems to be broken. You "steal" other people stocks and then you manipulate stock by selling some shares you own. This current system is not working. Pokers should change more shorters so if no matter happened if short squeeze should happen. There should be pressure both ways . There should not be pokers getting benefit this system.

Everyones talking about robinhood but can someone let me know why webull also did the same thing but aren’t receiving the same treatment? Genuine question btw.

The hedge funds...how were they able to short more shares than available?
@droyal18able3 жыл бұрын
I have one question from this video that was not addressed. how much of the stock did robinhood allow personally to be shorted. i cant imagine that large hedge funds use robinhood at all.

I think RH is just the fall guy. Nearly every broker did this. Retail investors should've known the risk too when it was 300.
@susanturner84573 жыл бұрын
RH was used to funnel its "customers" orders to the market maker. The maker pays for the orders so they use algos to front run the orders,this makes RH customers the product , not clients to help

The probelm is SEC. SEC should have done a better job making things more transparent. Also the brokerages should not have lending clients' stocks to Melvin capitlal.
