Hey man a quick thing on why synthetics like Mirror is useful: - Many people outside the US can’t get exposure to individual US stocks. I cant. - US security exposure without needing to deal with US tax regime (dubious legality but is a practical truth) - Shorting is super annoying with a regular broker and can’t be done reasonably in small lot sizes - Mirror specifically offered protocol rewards you could farm delta neutral. That’s part of the Ponzi but conceptually makes sense
@boukm3n Жыл бұрын
Thanks for contributing to the disgusting system of synthetics which robs retail of liquidity and skews the price action of the underlying asset. Thanks for cucking us all m8, no better than robinhood. We need to eliminate this loophole that allows market makers to effectively print billions of synthetics that aren’t tied to the real float. You’re enabling criminal market makers to continue destroying the strength of the US stock market.

You are, of course, 100% right about the mirror protocol being used for less than aboveboard purposes. Nevertheless, such synthetic financial products that just mirror another asset can be found in traditional finance as well. One example are synthetic CDOs, financial products that mirror e.g. mortgage backed securities, a type of natural CDOs, by taking on the opposing side of a credit default swap for a real mortgage backed security.
@terriplays1726 Жыл бұрын
Afaik there a lot synthetic ETFs being offered by reputable investment companies. Of course these ETFs are traded on regulated markets and are not suitable to hide insider trading.
@jonasghafur4940 Жыл бұрын
@@terriplays1726 I still wouldn’t touch those with a ten foot pole. Even if they aren’t offshore but in a legit jurisdiction, i just cannot figure out a single benefit they give you as an investor. What if the issuer goes bankrupt? are there any recoverable assets? What is even left of the market value at this point? The only reason i can think of for any party is sneakily offloading things off your balance sheet that way, but what do i care for it?
@philippebyrnes1213 Жыл бұрын
I think synthetic CDOs are broader than just being long on CDSs. Here's what Investopedia says: "A synthetic CDO is a financial product that invests in non-cash assets such as swaps, options, and insurance contracts to obtain exposure to a portfolio of fixed-income assets." As others have said, I wouldn't touch them and was shocked in 2008 to learn they even existed. The SEC was fatally corrupted in the 1980s and it's never been any damn good since.
@terriplays1726 Жыл бұрын

This video does not explain what Do Kwon hoped to achieve by setting up this ponzi scheme. Did he think he could be the world's first crypto fugitive for the rest of his life? The fact that they created this 1 Billion war chest (and only after trying to rescue Luna through this war chest, when this billion was almost up he realized it's game over) , so he took the remaining 100 million and escaped. A hardcore criminal would not try to rescue his firm, a hardcore criminal would have taken the whole billion and not spend 900 million to try to save his company. I think that Do Kwon is a brilliant young man who lost his bearings through handling so much money. He had control of 50 billion dollars while still in his twenties. And when it all came crashing down he panicked and ran. The real guilty party is the SEC , like in Bankman Frieds case. Where were they to protect consumers? There were enough signs to see the dangers of Luna for more experienced entities like the SEC , but they didn't care. They should go to jail also for incompetence.
@gstraveler1 Жыл бұрын
I also thought that he named his daughter 'Luna' quite interesting. If you were preparing a con I doubt you would name your daughter after it. I agree with you that he lost his way, that amount of money and power is often corrupting. I also think there were bigger forces at play who needed some players to crash the market so they could control it by 'saving' it.
