March is Women's History Month and we salute the Women of Lackawaxen who made history nationwide for running the entire town. Almost every business, hotel, bar, cinema, taxi, Post Office, mail delivery, milk delivery, and paper hanging was run and owned by Women. In 1920, this was unheard of in the United States. The men of Lackawaxen all worked for the railroad, which stopped in town over 8 times a day and left the women to operate all of the businesses and town operations.
The month of March is also known for Saint Patrick's Day and the Pocono Mountains celebrates with Parades and green beer. The Stroudsburg Parade takes place on Main Street in town the third Sunday of March every year and is one of the biggest in the four Pocono Counties. The Sloane Family Parade is a rural Saint Patrick's Day Parade that winds its way along a country road and through Woodloch Pines Resort and also take place on the third Sunday of March (March 19th, 2023). The story of how this parade started is amazing.
The Pocono Mountains makes some of the world's best Maple Syrup and the third weekend in March is also when Wayne County celebrates the Maple Syrup Producers and all of the sugar shacks open their doors to the public for tours of their facilities. Learn how maple syrup is made, pick-up some local syrup, and learn about the other products made using maple sap. Celebrate the month of March with Green Beer from one of the Poconos many Breweries and pancakes featuring locally produced Maple Syrup.
