I get so irritated with other KZbinrs sometimes when they say they have a recipe video and it's 20 minutes of them showing their outfits or other random crap. I can't understand why people would leave mean or nasty comments. That breaks my heart because when I first found these videos, I had just lost my home to a fire and my mom who has dementia & alzheimers and I were living in a hotel. I am her only caregiver and I was terrified about what I would do to feed us! I was going to the food pantry but it made me feel like a failure and one night I found one of these videos and when I heard "your family deserves to be fed" I broke down crying. These videos helped me realize I could utilize more places to put together budget meals to go with the food we were receiving. It really helped us get started on a path to getting back on our feet and I look forward to seeing the things you do and what ideas I can get from them! I appreciate the time you put into these videos and I just wanted you to know you truly are helping people, thank you!

When I was younger I was too proud to take any kind of assistance even though I had four children of my own and took in two other children who just wanted a family and stability. I would do my shopping after work while my children slept. I menu planned based on what was most nutritional and on sale. I always had a stocked pantry and freezer and made everything from dinner to snacks. Fruits and veggies were a must. Now that my children are grown I see them doing the very things I did for their families and can't tell you how proud I am. And I also believe that making your children the absolute priority helps. I might not have had a new car or iPhone, but I raised beautiful people and you can't put a price on that.

This made me think about places that take cake mixes and party supply donations like children's shelters 🤔 I need to research that some more!

You could definitely get box cake, a container of frosting, some vegetable oil and eggs (for the cake mix) for about $5.75 at Walmart and still have some oil and 3-4 eggs left over for something else. You could also go non-traditional and get a box of no-bake cheesecake for less than $3. Or you could spend around $11.50 at Walmart to get all the ingredients for cake and frosting. This may actually be better because you’d have plenty of leftover flour (can use to make bread, pasta, combine with spices for breading/coating, pancakes, rolls, etc) butter, milk and sugar to use in other recipes as well as leftover eggs, imitation vanilla and baking powder thus getting more for your money. If you wanted to go a step further and have a party or just have a meal with the cake you could use the leftover flour, butter, eggs, and milk to make pancakes and eggs for breakfast and only spend $1.33 for pancake syrup. Or use the leftover flour and some Italian seasoning to make pizza dough then make a pepperoni pizza with only $5.62 in additional ingredients (Italian seasoning, pepperoni, mozzarella cheese). You could make hamburger buns with the flour as well then do slider burgers for around $8.70 including toppings like cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, and onion. You could also make your own flour tortillas and do tacos. Meat, cheese, lettuce, sour cream and lettuce would run around $8.50 and you’d have leftover ingredients to use for something else. Some places will get you a free meal or item on your birthday as well (ex. Starbucks does a free drink, Buffalo Wild Wings does a free order of snack size wings and any sauce, lots of sub places will give you a free sub around your birthday, etc).
@scarleigh68492 жыл бұрын
Obviously I know this isn’t exactly $5 or less but still fairly cheap.

@@scarleigh6849 I'd hope I had some real butter in the house (I always do) and at least make the icing from scratch. That tub stuff is terribly inedible. For chocolate cake, add about 1/4 cocoa powder to cake mix if u have it...really upgrades the cake enormously. Thank god we have several grocery outlets that are way cheaper than Walmart. Walmart's not really good prices...just slightly lower prices for way inferior products.
@amiegamble16782 жыл бұрын
If your Walmart has a soda machine, you could get a can of their brand and a box cake mix(cola for chocolate, lemon lime for light cake mix.) You can use powdered sugar and a bit of milk to make a drizzle. This especially goes well if you use a greased/flowered bundt pan. Works well w muffins too. I usually have cake and ice cream for my kid. We don't have super fancy birthdays.

Some veggies, pasta of some kind and a few snacks, enough to feed 4 people two balanced meals…..I never meat the person, I put it in a cooler next to my garage door at the time we arrange. I expect nothing back, I know how it feels to be hungry. We couldn't get onions in my area for over a month. I purchased the container of dry minced onion for .88 at Walmart. If you soak them in some hot water, you can used them like chopped fresh onion. I've been doing this with quite a few dehydrated vegetables lately. Some are not cheaper than fresh per se, but save me in availability and save me from vegetables going bad (the worst money offender in my home). One trick to make boxed pancakes fluffy is to not over mix the batter. You want to mix just until its combined. You want a few lumps, you do not want the batter to be smooth. Also let the batter sit for about 10mins before cooking

I know this video is two years old, but for the blueberry pancakes meal... Since pancake syrup wasn't included in this grocery haul, if you don't have it on hand and really want a syrup-like topping, I would recommend using some of the frozen blueberries to make a compote. You could heat them on the stove, simmer them a bit to concentrate the juices, and add a little sugar to make it sweeter, if you have sugar on hand. If you don't have sugar, I usually just microwave the blueberries for a few minutes (might take longer depending on how many blueberries you have) until they've released most of their juices. This shortcut "compote" is usually plenty sweet for me.

I'm really sorry that you get nasty comments about your budget challenges. Yours have consistently been the least offensive, the most well rounded and probably the most nutritious videos I've seen. I have seen a LOT, some that feed a family of many (I don't want to call anyone out on your channel) on foods that are NOT nutritious, not well rounded, not concerned about long term eating habits or family health. One I saw literally fed a large family on sugar, carbs and junk! I nearly screamed at my screen when I viewed it! You always make sure to point viewers in the right direction, reminding them to check local support services if they're in dire situations. I really appreciate that you do this. So many just don't know where to turn, who they can contact, how to reach out and your videos takes this into consideration and have always been conscious of the very real problem in this country with food instability and food deserts. Thank you. Please keep doing what you do!

I am sure there are people that have no budget for there groceries and just buy whatever they want but most families with children are looking to stretch the food budget to be able to stay on budget for as long as possible with the food prices continuing to rise not all meals need to be perfectly balanced unless you have dietary restrictions. Tonight for dinner I made homemade chicken noodle soup with grilled cheese sandwiches which basically I am making the soup using leftover chicken leftover vegetables half an onion and noodles and bouillon the grilled cheese sandwiches good old kraft singles between bread to dip into the soup. As long as it fills the bellies and everyone is happy that's all that matters. Love these video's Mindy.

Your comment about being budget conscious and frugal because it means you can be more generous with your money really resonated with me. I enjoy your videos. They are informative and creative. Sorry you have to deal with ridiculous people complaining for no good reason.

Mindy, I just wanted to say Thank you. I came from a family who made something out of nothing growing up. When Covid first hit I went back to my roots and got creative due to food supply shortages. I appreciate the fact that you acknowledge the topic of food insecurity that a lot of creators fail to. I’ve considered starting a TikTok or KZbin sharing old family recipes. But, am still on the fence about it as everyone has an opinion.
@SeeMindyMom2 жыл бұрын
Miriam, most of the comments I receive are very nice. KZbin has definitely turned into something I didn’t expect it to be, but I have made it part of my mission to try to be helpful and positive. It’s hard sometimes to ignore the haters and just walk away, but it’s been good for me to develop a little tougher skin and just focus on all the kind people who encourage us. 😊

One tip for when you are buying unsliced loafs of bread that you want sliced, go up to the bakery counter and ask them to slice it for you. Almost any grocery store bakery would have a bread slicing machine back there that can do it quickly. 👍

I'm good with breakfast for breakfast for lunch or for dinner! Eggs are typically a very affordable protein and so versatile. You can jazz them up with whatever ingredients you might have if you want to make an omelette. It's a great way to use up leftover veggies, that last little bit of cheese in a package or some leftover meat from dinner last night.

Great video. Here is a tip I learned raising my sons. If there is any leftover meat or vegetables put it in a freezer bag and freeze at the end of the month take out the bag or bags put contents in Dutch oven or crockpot add some water maybe some crushed canned tomatoes or chicken or beef stock. This is your free meal and you can usually have left overs for the next day.

Hey, something for the future - Walmart price matches their app, so if the app said those eggs were $1.90, you can show the cashier and get the lower price!

Do they do that at the register? Do they call the floor manager? Can you do it at self-check out? Sorry, it's such a chore at my crappy Walmart to "need help" that I will pay the .50 to not deal with the delay.

@@AndiMaddux you can do it at self checkout it’s super easy just say the app says x amount and sometimes they don’t even have u show them they just change it it’s super easy

@@AndiMaddux the cashier has always been able to do it without any issues. I’ve done it with food, clothing, electronics…all of the things! The biggest cost difference I’ve gotten was $15 off one item. There may be an amount at which point they have to get a manager, but at least for the small stuff they don’t appear to. 🤗

Thanks for the great ideas. I live in Australia and still enjoy watching and learning from your vlogs. Prices of groceries are going up everywhere, including here. I feel our general grocery prices are higher here but if I convert the dollar amount it is a bit closer. Aldi is consistently our best priced supermarket and I shop other sales at other stores too... I'm always out for a saving 😊

Your regular comment of "you and your family deserve to be fed" is great. I feel the same in general. We carry blessing bags to give to anyone who needs it. Each bag has some food, some toiletries, and some socks or a hat or an emergency blanket. I have helped MANY families over the years because I feel strongly about that as well. However, I also share with them that I want to help them with their budget so they can work to be better off. One family was literally eating their mortgage on a monthly basis. I helped them with couponing, but also with budgeting and cooking. They ate out because she did not want to or could not cook a decent meal. It is sad how people use food banks, but their real problem is budgeting the money they have coming in. I am grateful that I can help people and I love your heart. I spent a summer homeless, living in my car while working two jobs to pay off bills. I have used a food bank once or twice, and have also given back by donating a hundred times more than I've ever received. I feel so grateful that I am able to manage the money we have coming in to support our family. I love your channel and wish you much success. I keep saying I need to start a channel, and I hope I can be as gracious as you are. I understand your feeling to validate what you do for your family, but there will always be people who disagree.

I want to practice these simple recipes a few times a month to help our budget.. to teacher my kids that it can be simple and still yummy but also to help train me to use up things I have.. thank you
