When I was younger, I thought fly fishermen were all a bunch of rich guys. Then, when we moved to Colorado, my family got me a vest, rid and reel and flies. The first time I went out I caught a 20 inch rainbow on gold medal water. I was hooked!! Been an avid fly guy for 20 years now!!

When I was younger, I thought they were a bunch of rich guys (at least in my area in the northeast us here)….. now that I’m grown, I realize they’re actually a bunch of rich guys who also suck at fishing! 😂😂😂. I mean. I’m KIND of joking, (I flyfish occasionally too). But honestly it makes me laugh every time I head up to the Farmington, and there’s 5 dudes in the same spot, with a combined total of 15,000$ worth of gear, who sit for 2 hours and catch nothing. Meanwhile, I’m wading down from an eighth mile upstream, and by the time I reach them I’ve caught a combination of a dozen rainbows, browns, Brookies, and even the occasional tiger or palomino rainbow, as one of those “classless spinner guys” with my abu Garcia ultralite, 4lb test, a couple split shots, an 8 or 10 barbless hook, and some juicy night crawlers. I will say panfishing with a fly rod is incredibly fun. I just never got as deeply into fly fishing as spinning because where I’m from, the fly guys look down on us spinners as low class rednecks, even if we are 100% respectful and classy, and also even though we’re tenfold out fishing them. 😩😩. Pretty sure it’s kind of just a Connecticut thing, and especially my area though.

As someone who started fly fishing the last year I caught about 30 trout in a morning on a orvis starter combo, some random flies I had no idea about, and had the best fishing trip of my life. Thanks for the video. I’ve been under the impression that Walmart fly fishing rod was not going to cut it so I held back from buying it and never took up fly fishing and other fly fishing setup were too expensive for a beginner. Now, I’m motivated to go get something beginner and try it out. The amazing fact is you caught fish with it. However, I think it’s not so much the fly rod, but more the fisher man.

Try it at least just a bit,as fly fishing outfits are actually pretty versatile depending on your setup and your lure selections. Seems most people think they are just for trout or salmon fishing. But that is just NOT true. I've personally used a 5/6 weight fly rod rig to catch quite a few good sized pan fish (bluegill and such) with. Hell,if I remember correctly (its been a while since I actually went fly fishing) I even caught a few good sized crappie,small bass and even a couple of what I think were shad on it as well. So yeah,a fly fishing rig is DEFINITELY not a one trick pony. The biggest thing that there is to it is probably learning how to cast the rod properly.
@Valscorn012 жыл бұрын
Give it a shot and don't be intimidated. You DO NOT need the most expensive stuff to catch fish either. I learned on a $120 combo from Cabela's. Caught countless trout, bass and panfish with it. If you do want to upgrade anything, YOUR LINE!!!!. It can be huge on how easy it is to cast or not. First thing i upgraded i had $75 line on a very very cheap reel. Worked even better and i still use that fly line, just on a better reel.
@mr.chaosvicious59682 жыл бұрын
@@Valscorn01 I think my starting outfit was a pretty cheap Martin combo (I think it was about 50-60 dollars) from WAL-MART of all places. Plus if you break say a cheaper $60-80 fly rod versus say a $300 or $400 one,it's gonna be much less of a big deal to you. And if I HAD to personally choose a type of flyline,it'd be a WF floating type. The WF stands for "Weight Forward" as the line is slightly weighted in the front,to help make it a bit easier to cast and give you a bit better distance as well (at least in my personal experience). Hope that helps a bit for anyone who is unfamiliar with fly lines. I honestly tend to only use floating fly lines,as I personally tend to lean quite a bit more towards surface type flies. I rarely use any sort of subsurface ones,I've only really used them maybe 2 or 3 times before. And whatever anyone who is inexperienced with fly-fishing does,do NOT if you can help it let your line run/rub across either pavement or rocks. As it can and often WILL eat up and damage that plastic like coating of your flyline pretty badly. And if that happens be sure to check your line to make sure it's okay. I speak from personal experience on THAT little tidbit from when I first started out.....😑

Years ago I purchased a martin fly rod combo. I enjoyed fishing popper flies with it for crappie on farm ponds in NC. This past weekend, I dusted it off and took it up to Foscoe, NC and the local outfitter at Foscoe Fish Company set me up with some new line and a leader and flies for my old martin. The next morning I fished the Watauga River near Grandfather. It was great fun on the river although I didn't catch any trout. The rod is a 6 wt, so it could have been a little heavy for that river, but now I'm ready to go again. Your video is great encouragement to keep to get out and fish.

Great video. This showed up in my suggested feed. I've fly fished with budget gear for years. Yes, some of the more expensive stuff is nicer - but is it worth it? (sometimes) You can catch fish and have fun with cheap gear as you have shown today. I'm going to go look at your other videos now.

3yrs now and i still fish my $100 mixmatch 9ft 5 wt from amazon! I bet the walmart drama would do just as well. Its all about your fly and leader anyway! Who care's!🤔 Tight line's man!

Thanks for the video. I'm new to fly fishing and didn't want to buy something really expensive. Picked up that rig at Walmart. This video makes me feel better about my purchase.

Wow very helpful, I just went fly fishing for the first time this week. I did catch 6 trout too. Would you please do a video on what length leader, and line you use? It's super confusing, maybe even show us dummies a few basic cast, especially in small tight creeks. How do you keep all the line and leader falling back down through the guides? Maybe I'm using too long of a leader? Thanks for the help.

As a guide, I use the rule of 3. If you take the fly hook size and divide it by 3, that is a great place to start. For example, a size 12 dry fly would probably cast well on a 4x leader. A size 16 fly, would be better presented on a 5x leader. Etc

Additionally, tippet can be added in different groups lengths and diameters to change your current leader. For most small streams, a 4x leader can be fished and bringing 4x and 5x tippet can carry you through most scenarios. Hope this helps! Tight lines! 🤙
